How to promote free online tool / service?

Hi!

what is the best way to get a site promoted? I created a new project, something like twitter but very different - so, how and where should I advertise for my new project? How did twitter do the advertising if they were new? (or any big project today) I never seen twitter ads, it was probably a word of mouth advertising... wasnt it?

    I think they are trying to increase their post count, but with it being gibberish I would be suprised if they are using some kind of automated script.

    You could also try some free JV Giveaways. They work well for building lists quickly and getting the word out.
