WordPress vs HTML???

Is there any advantage for someone who knows html, css, photoshop and php to use WordPress? Does Wordpress handle things better in the internet marketing arena or is it just easier for non tech savy people to use? i.e. is there a reason to use WordPress vs html?

  • It depends on what you are trying to accomplish. Also, it depends on how many pages you want to manage. If you will be handling a lot of content, I suggest WP. You can't go wrong with dynamic page handling. If you need nice designs that look like professional static sites, check out the top sellers at themeforest. Serious business.
  • html is a web language and wordpress is a content managment system... The two can't be compared. If you want to hard code page by page, then go ahead I'm sure you will have fun producing one page of content per day. If you want to easily integrate anything you want in a matter of minutes then install wordpress...

    • To help you out and make it easy for you.. just go with Wordpress.

      Every hosting company has an auto installation function for installing wordpress, so there's no need to worry about getting it installed properly.
    • The two can be directly compared, he is talking about comparing the methods of building a website why shouldn't you compare this?

      Also if you have any knowledge of PHP and Mysql you would not need to hard code page by page, you can still build dynamic pages and content very easily if you know what you are doing. Most people on here who automatically opt for wordpress don't know any better as they don't really know PHP, HTML or Mysql. I personally haven't gone over to Wordpress etc as I don't want to have to learn another thing...for me I have happy with what I can create myself.
  • Wordpress is PHP based, you bring that PHP skill to the table along with those other skills you mentioned, you can create some awesome stuff.

    OptimizePress, etc.. that IM'ers got used to using, they stick with it. It's not exactly like Wordpress is an 'advantage'...

    Most info products will teach how to setup a site in WP versus HTML or anything else.
  • I know a little bit of code. However, I sometimes don't have time to do it. I like Wordpress. They have some simple templates with not a lot of flashy gadgets and pictures on them that I can very easily tweak.
  • In the competitive era of internet marketing the word press is the best platform for grabbing the more advantages because word press is a separate company which always works for the benefits of its users there are so many genius developers and designers which always works to simply sort out the problems of users
  • As already mentioned, you can't directly compare HTML and WP as they are different things.

    It's a bit like building a car from scratch from the thousands of parts, or going into the showroom and buying a new car that's already been assembled.
  • IMHO Wordpress doesn't make sense for very small static projects, squeeze pages or mobile stuff... for anything else I use either Wordpress or Joomla!

    The advantage is flexibility and ease of use.

    With all the skills you have you can use Wordpress and do magic instead of spending time on the basics. There are millions of free themes waiting for your tweaking... there's free plugins for most anything... leaves you time for content and your creativity.
  • You can easily set up Wordpress and get a very nice-looking site in no time, because of all the themes that come come out of the box. Someone put it well - build your own from scratch with HTML, or go with something that's already assembled for you. That said, what it does mean is that for little tweaks, you can probably do that easily with HTML, cause you understand everything that goes under the hood since you built it. But I'd say for 95% of people who just want to get something up and running, Wordpress is the way to go.

    • I have been developing sites for over 15 years - hand coding html, etc. I now use wordpress to speed up the process and I haven't looked back.
      There seems to be a plugin for anything these days, it's pretty amazing what wordpress can do.

    You do not need to hand code to create HTML web pages. That is what programs like XSitePro exist to do.
    WordPress/Joomla/Drupal/Wikkis create dynamic database driven web pages. The down side of this is that you have a sizeable amount of database administration that you have to perform on top of creating your web content. Stuff like database backups and creating user accounts. This stuff does not exist is you are using a desktop application.

    With XSitePro & other HTML web page creators you can create highly optimized web pages in a flash, and you have full control over the look of the web page.
    Have you tried creating your own WordPress templates? What an effort!
    With XSitePro you do not have to have to be a designer to create your own website style. Its all covered in the introduction PDF tutorial.
    Believe me, I have been creating website for 15years+ keeping track of trends and SEO over that time, and none of the database driven websites match a HTML website for SEO.

    • Ultimately I think it depends on the project and what will yield the best end result for your in your marketing endevours.

      If wordpress has a feature that will allow you to increase conversations for your particular product (as an example) go with that, but if your html etc skills can build something even more effective - then that is your answer.

      Test your results and assess the results.

  • I ALWAYS consider WordPress as a first option. The majority of the things I need for a simple site are built-in to the core code and if the site needs to be more complex, it's not difficult to find a pre-built solution (plugin). I've been a web programmer for over 10 years, and WordPress is my first choice. It's not always the best choice for some projects, but it can usually do the job.

    We vote for WordPress. Not only that it's easy to use, everything you need can be done through WP plugins, too.
  • It depends on how in depth you want to take your site and how large you plan to grow. Wordpress is typically used to get things done quickly while making it look like you spent quite a bit of time on it. You can't go wrong with either.
  • Im all for worpress because of its simplicity. To make a whole new page in HTML would just be time consuming when I can just press Add in wordpress...

  • My choice is WP, because I am a technical noob. It`s easy to use and i use it for all my websites.
  • HTML seems like a new language to me and I don't think I could ever do it, so it would be a vote for wordpress for me. But this is not perfect either, it is just a lot easier in the short and long term in my opinion.
  • I have found that my HTML sites rank higher than my word press sites, but word press is easier. Also, it has many SEO plug ins. Those make my job of optimizing a lot faster, but we pay a price. Personally, I have found that Google loves HTML pages.
  • There are a number of things to consider really.

    For me -
    I use WP as a fast build option, themes and plugins make it quick, pretty and easy.
    SEO can be easily boosted with plugins and simple configuration, as can syndication etc
    Content addition and management is quick and easy.
    With WP, themes, plugins, I always have a paranoid nag in my head about security and exploits - as I do with any public/commercial scripts

    I use hand-coded sites (php/javascript/ajax/html/css etc) for projects that have a greater technical need.
    Typically if there is membership, carts, custom functions, higher security requirement etc, then it's hand coded all the way
    The downside is creating the pretty stuff - I'm a coder, graphics and pretty stuff are not natural to me! So for theme/layout, css and graphics - sometimes I do that, othertimes I outsource (easy and cheap, so don't stress about that)

    When handcoding, I never use other peoples scripts/code etc - maybe just a me thing,
    But there is certainly a ton of themes, scripts, libraries, graphics out there to speed up the php development if needed,

    You can use site creators as mentioned earlier, that will speed up things, add some functions, themes etc - for me I hate them, I've never found one I like nor liked the generated code, but that's a personal thing, maybe down to being a coder for so long..?!.

  • If you are going to be updating your site regularly, then I'd recommend wordpress. It's way easier than html in that aspect. Also, if you want to customize your site to your needs, the fact that you know html will be of great use to you.

  • The way I see it is that if I give up some control i have with HTML i get tons of optimization and speed. You can do more then 90% with word press but you do everything more then 90% faster. So if you need to do some complex custom things you have to build it from scratch other then that go with wordpress.
  • I'm old school and prefer HTML and CSS. Whenever you use a CMS system (like WP) you will have less flexibility in what you can do. Granted there are plugins but in general its more restrictive.
  • There is no advantage in wordpress if you know how to build your own site. In fact on-site SEO on wordpress is hindered unless you use plugins to fix it. Every plugin has to load whenever a page of your site loads. With custom sites you can add the code you need to the pages that need it and the speed will be much faster. There are some nifty plugins out there but they are not necessary and can e done a lot simpler with a custom script.
  • I did HTML websites for many years. I myself have switched all my sites over to WordPress because ease of use and all the other features. WordPress has come a long way over the years and makes a great content management site. There are Premium WordPress Themes and premium plug-ins that can make your site into what ever you need it to be without a lot of coding. Using WordPress gives you a lot more flexibility, can give you a professional look when used with a nice theme. I would be careful of using free themes and go with premium themes. I vote for WordPress over HTML and feel there is more of an advantage for creative designers. Knowing Photoshop and PHP could only enhance your experience with WordPress that would allow you to even benefit more from WordPress.

  • Depends whether you want to start a website from scratch or not. If you know your coding and find a great WP template..then it's easier to work off that and customize it to what you need vs starting 100% from scratch

  • I rather go with WordPress. It's much easier than trying to figure out all that coding and html stuff, which is totally foreign to me.
  • The plugins alone that can be used with a PHP based Wordpress site makes it better to use than an HTML site. I haven't seen too many people go from Wordpress to HTML, but going from HTML to Wordpress seems to be happening all the time.

You can change colors, add graphics, and install widgets and plugins. Additionally, there are many SEO tools and applications specifically designed for WordPress.

  • It depends on what type of website you want.

    If you can find a Wordpress template (or make your own) that automates a website's publishing capability, and achieves everything you want for your website, then definitely use Wordpress as it will make your life easier.

    However, if you'd like to use a very custom template or custom functions on your website that would require lots of tinkering to get Wordpress to do it, then maybe you're better off just coding your own html.

    For the record, I also code my own html, although I only use it to code very static websites (which get the job done for my business model).

      Pay attention to the people who actually know html, php etc and have used wordpress too.

      Personally I would say for Internet Marketing go with Wordpress, but it all depends on what you want to do.

      As far as html vs wordpress I would say the two can be compared. Some designers using html, also have it running from a mysql database that they have created.

      As far as looks well listen to the folks on the thread and visit their sites. Some of the sites well most of the sites, well most of the sites on the web period look like a 2 year old created them.

      Wordpress is easy to install, I say BS. Most people installing wordpress never even think about security and then wonder why their not selling anything. It's not that people don't have an interest in their goods it's that they used this basic installation and people are downloading their products for free, due to them not securing their wordpress installation correctly.

      Now, what I like about wordpress, shucks there's a plugin for almost everything, so you don't have to do everything by hand, you can work from a theme, well lolol make sure you choose the right theme, because not everything works well together.

      Setting up payments with the right plugins etc are a breeze, and this is where html sites sometimes get complicated.

      Anyway, to cut things short if you're doing IM go with wordpress, do an install yourself don't use any fantastico and all that other stuff folks use, a hacker will have a field day with those installations lolol. Search and grab some security information on wordpress, when you choose your themes and plugins read through the warrior forum to see what works well together.

      oh and btw the other poster was correct many seem to rank better with html than wordpress, why I don't know, so you may want to mix it up a little if you have more than one domain.

  • Most of my platforms run on Wordpress or a custom CMS, HTML sites are just too much of a time suck. Then again my sites are a bit larger than most..

    • I guess it all depends.
      I'm used to whipping out sites with dreamweaver and a few other tools. So, when it came to wordpress there was a learning curve, along with each plugin having it's own learning curve. I'm currently working with those curves right now and have been at it for about a month and a half now, give or take a few days between the frustrations lol.
      I could have had these 4 sites up in 1 to 2 weeks if I had done with with html. seriously.

      I will say this though once you Know Wordpress you can probably whip out a site within an hour, security and all.

  • Wordpress and plug-ins makes my head spin lol. I stick with HTML, but my webhosting has a built in Wordpress feature just in case i want to use it in the future. I'm much better at building HTML sites. In fact, it's what i'm learning in school right now lol.
  • I see a lot of wordpress fans on here and I do agree they make it easy with all those plug-ins but I have some concerns. I was attending this webinar and this guy told us his site was hacked and one of his plug-ins was how they got in. The company that made the plug-in did not update it and that is why I am sticking with HTML as the best. You have total control!

      It was all interesting to me when I came over to Wordpress from creating Joomla sites. Wordpress fans seem to promote how easy it is with little to no focus on security. While shucks I learned a ton of stuff on security while working with Joomla and I'm talking about the interface, mysql databases and all the way down to the server level.

      One thing that was always important with Joomla was to have updated plugins, with joomla they also had lists of addons that had been compromised and that you needed to update. I haven't seen a list like that yet while working with Wordpress, but I have seen folks recommending those old plugins from 2008, 2009 that haven't been updated lolol, even in wso's.

    Please don't tell me you are thinking of manually coding each site with HTML/CSS.

    If you are planning to do that, learn PHP and stop rewriting all pages every single time you want to make a change.
  • The answer is whichever allows you to get your site updated and published the fastest. It's as simple as that. The technology is there to help you, not slow you down. If it's slowing you down or getting in the way, then you're using the wrong platform/approach.
  • i personally don't know much about html, wp is always enough for me, but sometimes if you need to modify themes, you need to have some basic knowledge of html to make the modification.(usually not necessary actually)
  • If the website isn't really jam-packed with continuous content, (i.e. squeeze page, review website, small website) I go with HTML to save some space (my hosting is not unlimited).

    If the website is meant for a long-term blogging, I'll go with Wordpress

  • Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Knowing html will be useful for you in the long run why wordpress will or may give you only short term success.

  • Wordpress is alot easier to use, especially if you need to update your website often. Plus, since wordpress is free, there are a lot of free plugins and widgets you can find, and documentation, and a big community to help you whenever you need.
  • Wow, there's so much misinformation about WordPress--much of it coming from people who've never touched code in their life.

    I'm apparently one of "the few" who went from WP to HTML. I personally love HTML/PHP code, and find I can edit it more easily than WP. WP makes the simplest task so complicated. Unless there are specific options in your theme to change something, like header, footer, or sidebar elements, you're going to have to deal with code anyway.

    It's not that hard to use an include function/copy/paste your HTML/use PHP! Really?

    Here's why I'm not big on WordPress:
    --Much slower load time (even with the caching plugin)
    --Too many security volnerabilities
    --Less flexibility and control
    --HTML ranks better
    --Too many files per install (it's like a thousand or something plus 30-40 for each plugin) when a static site might contain 30 files
    *I can make a script that does the same thing with one file
    *Most hosts say unlimited, but count innodes and each WP install adds up
    --Making new pages in HTML is quick and painless
    *Use the same template/file
    *Use PHP include

    For the life of me, I can't understand why so many people think it takes hours to update a static page!
  • They both can't be compared directly, but in general words if you don't want to do anything just use Wordpress ready to use themes and perfect content management system. If you have lots of time and you believe in customised themes, pages, content then follow HTML.

  • I too know web development stuff - and it mostly depends on the kind of work you want to achieve.

    Wordpress makes sense - because one can quickly at the click of a button make sites and modify them and maintain them.

    HTML and CSS, photoshop etc. are the core basics of designing your own site from scratch.

    You can also mix and match and modify wordpress themes / plugins etc. using HTML/PHP/Photoshop skills etc. to get the customized result you desire. It's all a matter of choosing your tools, techniques and methods to achieve the desired results in the most efficient manner.

    -WordPress has an advantage over a straight HTML site when it comes to updates.
    -It an open-source platform that allows us to use multiple programming languages(HTML, PHP, MySQL, ASP, etc).
    -It is also user friendly for those who don't know programming code.
    -Plug ins can be used to add SMM, SEO tools, display images, improve security, add forms, embed videos, lock out spammers and more.

    HTML
    Simple HTML sites tend to take up less space,HTML is smaller and leaner.
    It is much more difficult to hack a site that has been individually coded in HTML

    • keep in mind that wordpress has it's own version of html that makes it complicated especially if you need to convert a ton of pages over to that format.
  • I think if you are doing with word press than you have no need to know for HTML,css and Photoshop etc..
    Word press installation is so easy to use and there is no need for any especial ability for making website.Although if any body knows extra about web development than there is advantage in word press also.

    • I think it all depends on what you're doing with it. If you are setting up an online store, or have a need to import html squeeze and sales pages then wp gets more complicated.

      Two of my last issues were;
      wp not using standard html making it difficult for me to just drop html in it.
      wp doesn't protect addons like forums etc. meaning you have to shell out monies for third party programs to do those jobs.
  • Depends on your needs and how quickly you can learn html, programs such as Xsite Pro now make it very easy for beginners to publish html sites.

    I use both but personally I prefer html sites for a number of reasons, also look at the top traffic sites in the world and they are often huge authority websites mostly not using Wordpress from what I can see, BBC, Wikipedia etc....
  • It's fairly easy to teach someone to use WordPress vs HTML.

    The level of entry is considerably lower, but WP doesn't necessarily give you an upper hand.
  • Wordpress and HTML are friends so drop the VS You can code your own CMS if you have the knowledge and time but why would you really? You can just customize WP and save yourself the effort.

      that's funny because I'm thinking the months i've spent learning the ends and outs of wordpress. i could have my html pages running from my mysql database quicker.

  • When you do your computing, do you use MS-DOS or Windows 7? Html is sort of like the MS-DOS of website building, using a CMS like Wordpress is like using Windows 7 for you operating system, much easier.
