How to stop WordPress comment spam

Hey Warriors,

When I find a good tool that will help other warriors I like to share It.

I have been working hard on a few projects and haven't had much time to add any value to this awesome forum lately.

So, with that being said, for those of you that use WordPress, I want to share with you a free plugin I have been using for the past year to block comment spam on my WordPress blog.

I don't get spam comments anymore since I started using this plugin. I have tried several other plugins In the past that were supposed to block comment spam but none of them worked for me until I found this one.

If you are getting alot of spam comments on your WP blog, I urge you to try this plugin. It has eliminated comment spam for me.

I searched for hours before I found this awesome plugin and have been using It on my WP blog for a year now.

It's a free plugin, you can get It here.. WordPress › Spam Free WordPress « WordPress Plugins

    Hey Terry,
Thanks! This has always been a problem for me, and I've used a couple plugins in the past but they weren't that effective.
I'll give this one a try.
    Thanks again,
    Ted

I don't use any plugin, i have just removed that option of submitting site url in the comment box by customizing the code, now visitors can only submit their name and email address, and i don't receive any Spammy comments.

I don't rely on plugins to prevent comment spam, spammers are smart and will always find a way out.

    I use disqus comment platform.

I'm not sure why you'd want to stop the spammers. If you turn on Akismet, it flags them. You can also set your comments to require moderation if the user has never posted to your site before.

After that, if you know what you're doing, you can use those spam comments to find great places to get free backlinks from. You'd be surprised at what I fished out of my spam traps before.

This works tried it my self, for some reason at least 25% of the comment spam I was getting was back linking to a wp site, so easy method, copy and paste the url's in a text file, up load it to scarpebox do a pr rank checker, then use scrape boxs manual poster function and watch the back links come in.

A tricky thing about comment spam these days is that a great deal of it is disguised. Many bloggers are being fooled.

I've been researching it lately and found instances of the same bit of comment spam on 3 MILLION and even 4 MILLION pages. And I've found several examples of comment spam on blog posts where the author is giving advice on how to combat comment spam.

As well as flattery, comment spammers may ask an innocent looking question, or point out a technical "problem" with your layout or your RSS feed.

The following list will help you recognize comment spam. It shows you tricks some comment spammers use:

I don't get comments anyway since I went into the php code of the theme.

In there I deleted whole amounts of code to do with 'login' 'register' post comment etc.

Hi alfid, Akismet Is used by a lot of people and Is a good plugin, but what I like about Spam Free Wordpress Is the simplicity of the plugin., you simply Install It and It goes to work Instantly blocking automated comment spam.

The comment spam I was getting on my WP blog was all automated comment spam coming from programs like scrapebox and others. Spam Free Wordpress uses a password system to block that type of automated spam.

After you Install the plugin It creates a visible password on your WP comment forms and the comment poster must retype the password to be able to post a comment.

If the comment poster does not retype the password they cannot post a comment.

      Example below..

I just use Akismet and the built in filter in WP to fend off loads of spam. I'd get sometimes hundreds to thousands a day on some sites.

The reason in behind for spammer to spam your blog is to gain backlinks. Turning off comment could be a best option but this will lost some legitimate comment at the same time. The alternative solution is to request a small fees (i.e $0.50 - $3.00) for comment review and approval. This way were not only able to get rid comment spam, while blog owner get extra income from blogging. The workload able to reduce at the same time because you need to review only serious paid comment, rather all unnecessary comment.

    put facebook comment tool
if they write in the comment box
they will show your site in their walls
so if they spam you, at least they will bring you some traffic too
also facebook check for people that comment a lot of times
so that could help you with the spam

As suggested by many here, you can use Disqus comments. The best thing about Disqus is that you can later on switch to Wordperss comments as well and still have all your comments.

Another solution is intense debate or you can also use Facebook comments.

I don't recommend turning off comments ... because it is nice to get feedback on your articles.
It is very annoying when you want to add something or correct the author and the comments are turned off... just hit the back button and leave the article as is.

About disqus sure that solves the comment spam problem but the comments are not hosted on your server ... maybe SEO people will add something about the freshness of a page by having new comments weekly.

What is working fine for me is use Facebook comments instead of normal comments.

The plugin I'm using is called SEO Facebook so each time you get a comment it can be read by the search engines which doesn't happen with normal Facebook comments, besides each time someone writes a comment is an extra backlink and exposure of your site with the person's friend

I totally disabled comments on my flagship site after it started getting enough traffic to be noticed by the spammers. Then they found a way to use software to attach comments to photos. The only way I was able to get rid of them was to track down the comments to the IP's they were using and IP block them. I ended up IP blocking the entire range of IP's from their city of origin. Problem solved.

If you still want to have comments, use the old good akismet. Spammer are having trouble if blog protected with akismet because once you mark it as spam and triggered the akismet spam algorithm, they will be banned from other blog who is using akismet as well.

    A) If your not getting normal comments from regular users simply shut off commenting on the site or use Akismet Comment spam prevention for your blog - Akismet

    B) 'Hold a comment in the queue if it contains' = One link.

    C)
    B) Add this to the Comment blacklist
    www
    http
    url
    ftp
    sex
    viagra
    drugs
    add more terms as desired.
This simple step puts any comment with a link (and terms above) into Spam (delete those permanently often)

    D) Change the time which comments can be made to a short time, less than two weeks is good.
