Is James Martell's book of 2005 still relavant?

Hi all,

My first post here and in the world of AM. I am new to affiliate marketing and my background is in finance although I know my way around Joomla for site construction *I think*

I was given a copy of James Martell's 2005 Affiliate Marketeers Handbook by a friend who did not put it into use and has been gathering dust on his bookshelf. I have been through the book and looks good on the planning of a site in terms of Keyword research and stucture.

I would love to hear from others who have the book, if the material is still relavant in 09 and / or direct me to what is relavant today , unbiased if at all possible.

Looking forward to your replies. ( Be Gentle)

    Hi, Raymee,

Things don't change as fast as the production of 'new' products would indicate. The basic information is still sound though, if you look, you will probably be able to find loads of 'ebooks' based upon James martells work.

Have you tried contacting him to ask if he has revised or added to this book? Changes or revisions might be available on line.

You might not like what I say - but I believe it.
Build it, make money, then build some more
Some old school smarts would help - and here's to Rob Toth for his help. Bloody good stuff, even the freebies!

I bought Martell's book when it first came out, used the info in it religiously, and was making about $2500/month from several affiliate sites. The one thing I would caution you about is links, though. While exchanging links (something he heavily advocated) still has some value (as far as I can tell, but I'm no expert), it would seem that one-way links are much more worth the time to pursue than reciprocal links are nowadays. Content is still king, as he says, but in terms of marketing, I would spend the bulk of my time finding one-way links from related sites. That would be the one big change from what I remember from Martell's ebook. Otherwise, I think the info is solid and worth the investment (if you're new to all of this).

Oh, and I forgot to add that Web 2.0 wasn't around back then either, at least not to this extent. I'd work on some social bookmarking and blog comment posting with links (look for 'do-follow') to build backlinks, too.

Artwebster and Zeus66. Thanks so much for your replies.

I shall be contacting JM directly to see if theres any updates out there.

Zeus66 - I am new to link building so I'll need to get up to speed on terminology and will keep your points in mind.

With regards to site building, He advocated MSFT Front Page. Whats your opinion on this. I've used Joomla in the past although I don't see FP being a problem to use. What do you guys use for your sites?

      Raymee :-)

I have used MS FrontPage, but honestly it isn't worth the money unless you're an advanced user. I now use a free program called Nvu. Just do a Google search for that and you'll get a download link. Link building is always going to be mucho important. Shoot for one-way links to your site using anchor text (that's the words you turn into links) that are the main keywords for your site that you want to rank well in Google for. If you have a site about dog training, you'd want to get links pointing to your site with that phrase and others like it so you have a shot at ranking high at Google (and Yahoo, MSN, etc.) when people search using those phrases.

It was not relevant in 2005 so I see no reason why it would be so in 2009. Did he not get all of his sites deindexed from Google anyway.
