Upsell OTOs funnel, AFTER they have paid? or BEFORE they pay? (before Payment page) ?

What is the most common internet marketing approach to include an upsell to your funnel, from your first product ?

Including the upsell AFTER they customer has paid? (on the thank you page after they have paid)

or Before they have paid ? (when they click the PAY link, but before they actually pay?)

from Sales page
-> [one time offer/upsell] ->Payment page (pay here for product 1 or both 1 + 2) ->Download page


from Sales page -> (pay here for product 1) -> [one time offer/upsell]
->Download page

or another path? which you can list


What are the advantages, disadvantages of both paths above? and which are more common?

    The most common is Sales Page > Payment > OTO > Download Page

    I personally prefer Sales Page > OTO > Payment > Download Page

    In all of my time working with PayPal it seems that they prefer the second option so it is what I prefer to stick with when selling through PayPal. Conversions to seem to be a bit better with the first version though.

    always after they have paid because untill they pay they havent bought the product

    i use squeeze - oto - paypal - upsell - paypal - download page for both products

    After they pay then offer the OTO. Sometimes OTO can be a huge turn off to potential customers.

    Pay --> Upsell --> Buy Upsell ---> Page for both products

    Pay--> Upsell --> Don't buy (in this scenario there's a link on the OTO page to the download for only the first product, obviously.

    Some people stick a product registration or optin page before the actual download whether it's only for the primary product or both the primary and the OTO. According to the endless feedback here, that pisses a lot of people off.

    Main offer --> Payment --> OTO --> Payment --> AWESOME
    Main offer --> Payment --> OTO --> Reject Offer --> Down Sell --> Payment --> QUITE GOOD
    Main offer --> Payment --> OTO --> Reject --> down Sell --> Reject --> STILL GOOD (Why, because OTO is just a term, you can always keep reminding them to buy and if you do give primised value and more in the main offer they will come back to buy later if not initally)

    Now if u want for the payment to appear only after the OTO offer is displayed, the chances are high that they may not like to OTO and decide to skip your main offer as well... so i think it is better to get paid before processing to the upsells / downsells etc.
