I am not targeting Google, but targeting related forums is that OK?

Hi, I am going to start a Football (soccer) related site very soon, but as I know don't know SEO well, I am targeting related forums, blogs, Facebook, official fan pages, etc. to get my targeted traffic. Do you think it will work?

I have not selected my keywords yet, so I am thinking about generic domain names, but it will have something like football club Barcelona.

Forget SEO. Focus on building a quality site first. Get into the mind of your target audience and CATER to their needs. Engage them in conversation and build your site based on their feedback. They themselves will promote you. Forget about SEO for now and keep your TARGET CUSTOMER FIRMLY IN MIND.

Original garbage content is still garbage. Write compelling content instead. Content that your readers will link to and share on their networks.

In other words, work from PASSION not just GREED. Greed is fine but your primary focus should be on how to give your audience what it WANTS.

This. Focus on producing high quality content and your site will easily pick up viral traffic. Do forum marketing, blog commenting, article syndication, etc

Excellent advice, it's if you get the quality right, the traffic will follow.

Of course that will work. And much better and faster than Google.

For sports, forums and blogs are excellent ways to connect with other fans and drive traffic to your site.

Agreed. if you have engaging content and use social marketing properly then you will get search traffic anyway as a side effect. If using wordpress get a free social plugin like digg digg. there are also lots of social sharing sites you can use to get a social boost for free.

Is it just going to be a Barcelona site?
That narrows yourself right down, and in that case you need to know exactly how you are going to monetise it.

Better to go for a general football site, then you open up all all teams?
      Cheers,

That's a great method. You're getting high-quality targeted traffic while building relationships with your would-be buyers. SEO is unreliable right now, so yes, your method will work.

Yes it can work, but visit the forums first and research. See what they are talking about and be active on the forums. Then develop your site and provide content that is unique and informational to your visitors. Once you have your site built, then do SEO that is related to the content in your site. Visit Google Keyword Tool and see what people are searching for that is related to the content of your site. Once your site is completed and SEO is done, then do article marketing on topics that is related to your website content with a link back to your website. When choosing a domain name try to choose something that is related to your website. Again Google Keyword Tool can help with this and even help you think of a word or two for your domain name. Targeting forums is OK, but you really need to do good SEO on your site before targeting forums and other social media.
