Guidance on rates for website design

Howdy folks,

A good friend of mine has kindly offered to set up a website for me. He has some experience, and a lot of talent. I was wondering what would you expect to pay if you were outsourcing this task? He will be setting it up exactly how I like, while teaching me how to operate and maintain it.

This is not something he does, and he won't look for any money for it, but I'd like to know exactly how many pints I should throw his direction

Site will be quite simple, offering a service. A figure of 100 quid sounds nice in my head. Enlighten me!

  • Maybe you can set a per code page or per hour rate. Calculate the amount of time it would take you and pay yourself a living wage.
  • I pay $150 / hour if I can't do it myself. I charge a flat fee of about $2500 for a full shopping cart site.

    In my situation most freelancers will say $80 or half that. Then they find out they can't do it. Don't go cheap but don't leave $$ on the table either.

    The question is what is the site or modification worth to you?

    In the event of a failure, could have learned those skills yourself (in that time frame)?

    #1 don't pay a cent until the test site is to your satisfaction. Even if he/she is your friend.

  • I agree with Invert Planet. You have to charge what you feel you are worth. How hard are you willing to work for your money?
  • As I have actually read what you posted, unlike some of the others

    I think £100 worth of pints would be a generous gesture, as long as you don't make him drink them all in one session.

  • 100 quid sounds reasonable.

    Did the same thing with a friend of mine - it was a simple WP website, and the added value was his great design and knowledge of themes. Paid him $250 for his effort and time spent whereas he would probably charge 1,000$ from regular clients.
  • This isn't a black and white answer, but when you're just starting out you just need to charge what you think you're worth. This is what I did. After a while you'll get to know what people want to pay for what. It's something you can only learn through experience.

      He's not only giving you the design, but training. That's very generous of him. Sounds like a good friend. That kind of support wouldn't come cheap.

  • It depends really on what you want. If you hire a company on Freelance sites it can be around the $100-$300 mark for a simple websites. The more features you implement, the more it will cost.

    You can even do it yourself: buy a domain, install Wordpress, get a free theme, edit it a bit and you can be done for less than $100.

    I offer websites from $495, which gives you a customized Wordpress theme, all ready and installed, completely SEO optimised.

    There's always options!
