  • If you are changing your password, change it to 15 characters, I have found those to be pretty much unhackable.

You'll probably find a secure password has more to do with variation in characters rather than number of characters though naturally there needs to be enough characters to allow for that variation...

You better hope they fix this because even if you change your password its NOT encrypted in the database.

Also the site headline implies that these other email providers were hacked, and they weren't.

Marcus Carey, a researcher at Rapid7, a security company found that among the data were some 106,000 Gmail e-mail addresses, 55,000 Hotmail e-mail addresses and 25,000 AOL e-mail addresses. Those e-mail accounts were not hacked; instead people had used their e-mail address as user names for a Yahoo service.

      Yup,
I have had a yahoo email account since the late 1990s.
Recently I could not log into my account. (I tried and tried)
my password was not valid, I answered security questions like 13 years ago and had no idea what I said.
When I tried to get back in, there was not way I could. The system was completely crazy and made no sense
-Request new password from alternate email address (ok done)
      - wait two days before trying to follow password recovery link (stupid but done)
      - answer multiple security questions, ---get the answer wrong again and again... since it's been over a decade since I last answered the questions -- not done, but wait... you answered wrong too many times ****start process all over again.
this went on for months (I could never get ahold of anyone from yahoo ever!)
The other day I changed my password to Facebook ( I do this from time to time every year or so.)
then I got some message that led me to think the accounts were somehow connected.....
Turns out when I changed one password the other automatically changed!!!!!
GO FIGURE, can I really say I'm amazed that yahoo got hacked!!!!!!
If this were still going on I think the only way I could get back into the account was to see if this list were floating around -- hoping that I was on it

Yes, I heard that one too and LinkedIn notified members to change their passwords. If you are to create a password, make sure that it's not associated with your personal details or some simple random text or number series that are easily hacked. It's very important you create a very strong password combination.

That explains why I sent an email to a yahoo account
and I got back an email with a spam message that
was also "cc" to all the other emails in her address
book as well. That's a LOT of SPAM messages.

I guess here account is hacked as well. Need to
    let her know.
