Why Is It So Hard To Find a Great Designer at a Great Price??

I want to create an awesome WP site of 2-5 pages.

I need to "knock it out of the park" for the HP.

I advertised here and didn't really get any serious replies.

With my new site, I want to develop a relationship with my partner which will lead to thousands of dollars down the road, helping me grow.

What going on?! Is this whole industry too suspicious? Too "catch the money" up front?

What about those who really need a site to kick butt and are looking for a long term relationship?

There are many great designers around but quality has a price. You get what you pay for

I have a great website designer here is Aussie land if you're interested with whom I have a great relationship and she does all my major sites. However I agree with the above comment. One really does have to ensure one is prepared that one is prepared to pay a quality designer for their services. If you want alcheapo then you're going to get an alcheapo site. PM me if you want the name and contact of my website designer.

Yes, business is all about people and networking...

To get partner for your current project, just contact a few Warriors that have released Wordpress WSOs. Thare are a lot of Warriors willing and ready to help you with your venture.
Based on my experience, WF is the best and easiest place to build network for internet business. You just need to ask.

Designers get fed this line all the time. They know it never eventuates as a person with a serious plan knows they can't skimp on the major stuff like the entire branding of a project.

A lot of time goes into not just the creative process but also the feedback and changes that are inevitable. Time costs money and if you want design work that not only looks good but suits your market and builds your brand then you have to pay. Otherwise put up with what you can afford - but I really think you'll have better luck if you ditch the 'I promise I'll pay you later' attitude.

Situations like this - "It's like twitter. Except we charge people to use it." - really frustrate designers (and other service providers.)

Yes, as mentioned above design work is not limited only to the actual design. Any kind of design work includes discussions with the client, researching his needs and making sure that the design won't be just good but adequate to the client's expectations. Once the design is completed most of the time there are revision because many thing are a matter of taste...

All is strictly individual and time consuming - and as mentioned above - time costs money.

Graphic designers don't pay their bills with "relationships." They pay their bills with cold hard cash. They are often offered "jobs" that entail a percentage when and if the site ever makes any money and the buyer always says this is going to be the biggest thing since sliced bananas. Often that is not the case.

So if you want a great design, post your project on Warriors for Hire or Elance or some freelance board and dig into your pockets and pay for it.

You get what you pay for.

You will find with most services you require, whether it be graphic design, coding, or copywriting, all the good guys have more work than they can handle. I run into this problem all the time. It's hard to find someone great who is available for work. It stands to reason those who are very good at their job are in high demand.

Because Santa Claus does not really exist?
Maybe great designers know their market value and are selling themselves accordingly? just a guess, but again, "great designer" and "great price" and "knock it out of the park" are all relative concepts, which can vary from person to person.

I didn't see your advert, so I'm only commenting on what you said here, but.....

Did you make it clear what this "long term relationship" would involve and/or how you expect the relationship to make thousands of dollars?

If that was your advert, I for one would just think "yeah right. He expects me to do loads of work for little pay and has a pie in the sky idea that will come to nothing."

It's nice to hear these responses. I own a small brick & mortar design firm and this is the crap we always have to deal with. It's sad to know that there's plenty of talented designers out there who get trapped into doing spec work and whatnot, who end up being paid peanuts.

I make it a habit to refuse ever being viewed as a commodity or to be suckered into the "you'll get tons of work down the road" nonsense.

Out of curiosity, what do you consider to be a great price? I'm not a designer, but the promise of "more money down the road" and "lots of future work" is generally a huge red flag for writers -- it may be the same for designers. You could be scaring them off with the verbiage -- or your rates are simply too low; no way to tell without knowing the range you are talking about.

As a developer i get a couple of e-mails a day from people wanting me to 'Become A Partner', this is nearly always a one way deal as most people don't want to pay a fair price for my services. It's just the way things are at the moment.

I agree with what sbucciarel wrote. Web development is my full time career, If someone isn't willing to take me seriously and pay what my services are worth, they are wasting there breath.

Unless working with someone is mutually benificial why bother?

Also, if you want someone talented who can "knock it out of the park" you have to keep in mind few things:
    - The designer needs to be technically competent
    - Needs to have a great eye for graphics
    - Needs to understand your business AND your customers
    - Needs to know about conversion optimization (what is the point of a website if it doesn't convert?)

Those are not some easy requirements. Designing a website takes time and effort. Sure, a lot of people can create some kind of sites, but to get something custom built.. well, that is different and thus often the prices are also different.

To create a good website design and back end, even using wordpress takes hours of hard work, its not as easy as you think or likely everyone would be doing it, I love it when someone comes along and thinks that they can get 30 hours of work done for one dollar an hour. It would be nice to be able to get top notch services at bottom dollar rates but you really do get what you pay for and when you develop services for a living you cannot expect to get everything for nothing.

I was working with a great rock band one time, mastering an album, setting up the website promotion all the fun stuff and everything was working out really great.

Had songs on the radio, two CDs and a DVD, then the lead guitar went and rolled his truck ended up in rehab and derailed the entire deal, lost thousands...

What it taught me was that even the best laid plans can come apart and cost you money when your dealing with an unknown factor you cannot count on making money down the road you have to do it in the here and now, because promises of money and riches do not help...

That is just the way it is.

These sort of partnership relationships don't usually start out that way. I do have a developer who I have worked with for several years now and sometimes we do work on stuff as partners instead of the normal buyer/seller relationship.

Sometimes we both take risks on a new project and there have been times we both lost on a deal. But we work together on some stuff because we trust each other to both work hard and make good decisions on stuff.

Thats hard to find in a new relationship unless both parties are very well established and have proven track records in their respective areas of expertise.

If I had a dime for every person that dangled "Thousands of Dollars down the road"

What you're not getting is that freelance designers/programmers work on a per project basis for the most part. You're not only asking them to give up any payment now, but taking them away from work that does pay, all on a great big "Maybe".

I've gotten sucked into a few of these over the years and I've yet to have one actually work out to my benefit.

I go with, "you get what you pay for too."

This hold true especially in graphic design, when the product
is the design, it takes effort to create each individuals project.

Cheap designers want to get it done and over with quickly so
that reflects on the work that was done to your design.

I'm a website developer and, when I first was starting out more than 5 years ago, I fell for stuff like that. The promised "long term relationship" never arrived. Equally problematic, in my experience, was that the people who tried to leverage the future income were the most difficult to work with.

For a web designer, the time is spent, whether or not the future ever comes to fruition. If you are unknown and just starting out, you cannot wave the card of "out of the park" to people, in my opinion. Fifty percent of nothing is still nothing.

When I started holding to my prices, I started making more money than I imagined I would and have a list of long-term clients who have referred their friends and wouldn't go anywhere else for services.

Someone above said you have to pay for quality. I couldn't agree more. Serious business people understand AND appreciate that.

Keep in mind that graphic design and SEO are 2 different things and sometimes conflict.

#1 - If a designer doesn't think he's even worth market price for his efforts, what makes you think he can "knock it out of the park"?

#2 - I've worked in permanent jobs, temp jobs, and freelance. "Better opportunities down the road" sounds great to the temporary employee - most of them are in temp jobs because they're having a hard time finding a "steady job", and the promise of moving from 'temp' to 'permanent' status is like a holy grail to them. For freelancers it's usually different. Freelancers aren't looking for 'job opportunities' or job leads - they're doing this for money - NOW money. Sure, it's cool if they snag the occasional "steady customer", but they're not looking to work for free (or cheap) for the promise of the "ground floor opportunity". As stated in other posts, those promises are a 'dime a dozen'.

Well if you are looking for a partner you are going about it wrong. For starters any experienced developer would never work on a guarantee, and any none experienced developer knows the amount of time and effort it takes to design a good quality website. Like a basic 5 page word press site for someone who knows what they are doing could take 1 or 2 weeks of hard work if not longer, but that's only dependent on how good you want it. Nonetheless, your kind of going about it wrong and sounding more like scammer (sorry) rather than a professional.

Instead of asking for business partners offering $1,000s of dollars without any guarantee either take the time to design the website yourself, or pay somebody to do it for you upfront. If your business plan is such a money spinner it really would not matter whether the website is topnotch designed or complete pile of crap. Finally if you are looking for partners, post in Joomla, word press or drupel forum instead and don't quoting unrealistic figures along with displaying your credential and previous experience of creating a successful business, if you have ever done so before. However, i really don't think you will find an experienced web developer.

I've been a graphic designer (print publications, yes, they're still around, but also my own products and websites) for 40 years this year. Each year folks approach me with the latest, greatest opportunity of all time that will provide oodles of money down the road — if only I do the job at a discount, preferably 100%, as an investment, in exchange for all that future income.

I've heard this from individuals, small businesses, and companies that I know spend more money on one day's worth of toilet paper than the fee I'm asking.

Fell for it when I was young, inexperienced and stupid.

Now, I'm not as stupid as I was, so when I hear that, I just get up and walk away. Can't really educate these folks, and I'm too old and cranky to start now.

But it really pisses me off when they moan and complain that I won't give away my time and expertise — everything that I acquired through years of costly effort — for free. Someone who complains that I want to charge a proper rate for what I can do and know will not get a sympathetic hearing from me.

Surely you jest! No one that puts forth the time and that kind of financial investment in their education whatever that may be, sets down the road with the intention of eating that investment and incurring that kind of LOSS just so you can get it knocked out of the Park!
