Is it better to just have a basic thank you page after someone has opted in, or to direct them to the products sales page that you will be offering in the auto responder via your aff link?

It depends upon what your primary objective is for the
    list and new subscriber.

    If you're running a confirmed opt-in (double opt-in) list,
then you'll likely want them to go to their inbox and
    click on the confirmation link.

If you're running a single opt-in list, then you may want
to re-direct them to the sales page.

The best set-up will be revealed by a split-test to reveal
the most effective route to achieve your stated objective.

    Dedicated to mutual success,

Shaun is pretty spot-on with what he has written here.

It's a case to case basis but sometimes, single optin is quite a pushy choice.

IMO it's best to direct them to a "Confirm Your Subscription" page before you give them the Free Gift or try to market them any affiliate products. A lot of people nowadays are wise to email sign-ups and so just enter some random address so they can claim their Free Download.

At least if you use Double Optin they will have to log into their account and confirm before they gain access. Again this doesn't solve all the problems but it might help you build a higher quality, more responsive email list.

    Just my 2 cents

I am just starting to build my first list...i currently have the confirmation turned off...but the freebie i am giving away is a 7 day report via emails, so they are not getting the report on the thank you page.

I agree with both Noel and Shaun. Seems to be that trust trumps the quick sale.
