Are People Losing Interest in Facebook?

by Adie

I just noticed. Several months ago, had an average of 250 friend online during busy hours. I added more friends ever since. Lots of posts and the like.

These past couple of days until now, I see only around 87 to 100 online friends and some active friends don't even update their wall anymore.

Did you notice something similar?

I think you're just seeing an influx of Facebook marketers (the kinds of people who add everyone and their brother) tapering off their activity because they aren't making any money with mass friending. That or you have a bunch of kids as friends (pretty much the only other ones that accept any and every FB request outside of lonely/narcissistic adults) who still enjoy their weekends.

I have noticed a decline in Facebook usage by the general public. I have a feeling people are getting a bit sick of the garbage that tends to bombard your newsfeed these days, with the primary use being chatting/messaging DIRECTLY with new/old friends and sharing photos.

this reminds me of the old saying:
        "garbage in ... garbage out"
what do you know, this still holds true in the FB universe.

The change to Fan pages to a Timeline look truly sent many FB fan page marketers back to square 1. Talk about a game changer. I don't see the downturn lasting very long though. There is just something about marketing to a pool of 900 million users that pushes marketers to tweak limitations into advantages. Indeed, there are already like magnet pages that work with app space to around timeline design limit issues.

Well guess putting all marketers back to square 1 puts me at their level haha.

I think Facebook is peaking but until something else comes along that allows promotion of businesses easier... Facebook is king

All people in my friends lists are known personally by me and there is not even a single Internet Marketer. All high school friends, college friend, and former co-workers.

Contrary to what many gurus say, I dislike FB for marketing. It's just for socializing, for me, even then I get tired of it for a while. If you're not away from FB for a while then you're not doing anything worthy of posting about when you're on there. I think lots of other people have taken this perspective now, too.

And I despise Twitter. Just despise it.

I can't figure Twitter out for my life. I have 1 real account and several fake ones because all the gurus that I used to listen to said that I had to have a Twitter account.

My real account, which shares it's name with my name here (@jarycu), barely has any followers.

One of my fake accounts, which I've made 1 tweet with in 12 months, gains 10-15 followers a day on good days and at least 2-3 on slow days. I started it when I was going to do an authority site on GPS's, and then I lost interest and never followed up on it because, well, I don't believe in stand-alone GPS systems. (My phone does just fine on its own.) I can't believe how many people follow the stupid account (@getunlost), and I've left it open as an experiment just to see how many followers it can gather without me doing anything at all to it.

I have friends from all over and the decline is not new. I see the same 20-30 people whenever I go there. I think the constant flops in privacy matters just bummed people off.

Whereas before you could always see a little of the most recent activity on some people's profiles, now you see nothing but those bigger pics in the header. Everything else is shut down if you're not friends.

Then there are the "mass" accounts. i might visit FB once a week but still get maybe a dozen friend requests from people I don't know.

I guess, like me, people have finally realized its all about a company taking your details, likes and dislikes and "making that info available" to marketers. That's a put-off principally because we all know it, but they deny it.

I used to be on FB every single day...back when Farmville was popular. I had the biggest, best-est, most awesome-est farm you'd ever seen.

Then I grew up and quit playing games on FB and, well, it just seemed pointless thereafter. Now with a sidebar full of ads and "promoted" stories popping up in the newsfeed, combined with the fact that I don't really know that many people on my friends list (as I was just too lazy to weed out the Farmville'ers), it's just another needsless distraction that I've cut out.

    Next up: The Warrior Forum.

Funny. I never once played any of the games on FB.
I really did like the idea of catching up and keeping in touch with my friends.

I was naive to believe the site, when it started, really was about that. And then the ads, the profiles loosing privacy, the fake accounts, the "promoted" stories...many felt duped, i think.

Facebook is like any social network. As new ones come in ie. twitter and pinterest, some people leave and some people stay.

However I think that you will find that Facebook will outlast the oter social networks and will increase activity again.

So long as all the marketers start using it for its true purpose and stop spamming it.

Unfortunately, that's not likely. Those share prices need a little hiking...

Which brings me to another problem with FB - am i right in thinking that of those 900 million (supposedly) members, anything from 1/3 to 1/2 are duplicate/fake accounts?

I'm not thinking of the stock market when I log in, and those 16 year olds that populate the site aren't either. As long as there is nowhere better to go, the site stays where it is as far as importance to the general public. Same way Myspace was way back when.

Do I think Facebook will outlast others? *Shrugs* Who knows. Could be another college whiz kid building the next big thing as we speak. Speculating doesn't do much in the meantime.
        {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[6617214].message }}

I'm not assessing their stocks either. What i'm saying is people no longer feel comfortable with being as open on FB as they were BECAUSE of the company's business needs.

And so if farmville no longer turns them on, and they no longer feel at ease posting their life there, why else would they go there? That's why there's a decline of activity.

Besides, FB's marketers want the spenders, not the will-be-spenders. under 16s is not what MOST marketers are paying millions for.

Nothing like that here. Even I have increased my time using Facebook. However, my experience is, when someone new in this network, he likes to update much more than regular user. Very soon these people lose interest and become regular. So, in your list, if the amount of aged user are more, there will certainly be a downturn. Just share my experience. Because I see, new people are still rocking there!

I've noticed a surge in Linkedin invitations. But people seem to simply set up their account there and bugger off. The "i'm on Linkedin, hence i'm a professional" feel of the network almost makes people think its imperative to be there.

There is also the odd invite for new social networks from old FB friends. Could people be doing the rounds in smaller social networks? People want to interact. They just don't appreciate the squibillions FB is making with OUR details.

Other people are learning to stay incognito online. I get plenty more emails from friends these days, whereas before they would simply message me on FB.

It's interesting that you mentioned this, because I was one of those people. But last week, I completely revamped my profile, started to interact in groups, follow few comments: basically, I went back to the core networking, which of course is precisely what LinkedIn is for. Kind of regret all that time I ignored it.

I belong to a few closed groups on FB and it seems to me that those groups are busy than ever.

Personally I am curious to see what happens next as it seems these soical networking sites are very cyclic, first it was Friendster then MySpace surpassed them, then Facebook trounced MySpace, at this point in time it seems that facebook is here to stay but we shall see..

To the person who suggested the Warrior Forum - I think that is very different - as a business model the monetization was started long ago and it appeals to only a small niche of all internet users and very few 14-16yo kids

I have always liked Facebook. Only to keep in touch with old and new friends. Also my family, as i do not live near them anymore.

I had used the games in Facebook, but got fed up with the crap they send to my inbox. And they seem to sell your details to other companies as they started showing up. Now, i use it to keep in contact with friends and family.

As for the ads. I just don't take any notice of them anymore. Seeing that i have websites and stuff, i have encountered the ad blindness, thank god. I don't even click on them, as the ones i get now aren't even things i like.

I do have a car, but i hate them. I have no intention of buying or looking at another. The reason is, my car is to do a job of getting me about, from a to b, back to a. Shopping, going out, weekends away. Not buy or look at another car for any other purpose. And that's just an example.

I get bizarre woman ads, and last time i checked, i were a bloke.

    Anyway, back to work....

People are using G+ as it is more intuitive and has better search facility than FB's woeful excuse, it intregrates with all the other google thingys that they use too. Pinterest is a big draw as well, they way we consume information is becoming less text based and more graphical am not really sure that FB is keeping up.
Just look at the stats you can see whats growing and what is not. Could be My Space all over again or Digg.

For the record kids on FB are not a market, they dont have email and they dont have credit or access to it so cant buy anything. I wonder how many million users that would negate? Could be half the FB users.

I signed up with G+ but just didn't like it. Not sure why - guess it's just different. I still use Facebook but have noticed some of my real friends have dropped out and deactivated their accounts. They say they are just "sick of it." I don't spend enough time there to get sick of it. My granddaughter spends more time on stumbleupon than she does Facebook.

Are you sure that people are moving towards Google plus from Facebook? I do not agree with you. Compared with Facebook, I found very low activities in Google+. It's true that, Google has brought everything under the same umbrella there, but still there is long way to go even to make a challenge to Facebook.

I am one of those people who uses fb to promote my business. I have be-friend a lot of people I don't really know yet I am sure that is in the same business or interest as I am.

Although, I have just started. I am consistent when it comes to updating my fb account and posting updates about my business. My point is that though fb proves have slow effect when it comes to producing reaction from our audience, it is still a great way to generate exposure and gain benefit in the long run.

That's actually one of the more benign purposes of Facebook, but it is annoying, I grant you that.

If you haven't seen it, this is telling:

Facebook Amazon.com advertising lubricant - Los Angeles Times

A guy made a funny FB post about a 55 gal drum of personal lubricant. Amazon turned it into a "sponsored story" and shows it on the profile of everyone he knows. Over and over and over again. He resents FB turning him into an unwitting pitchman.

That's creepy enough. This is creepier:

Facebook asks you if certain friends are relatives. Ever wonder why?

That information can be used by the government, collection agencies, banks, etc. to put the bite on you when your relative drops out of sight or is suspected of a crime. I don't know that FB is selling this info but it's reasonable to assume they will -- privacy be damned.

It's not hard to aggregate information about an individual using a search engine. It just takes time and a little investigative skill. But with FB, you're handing it over on a silver platter. And for what? Cute kitten pictures?

The best thing that works for me on Facebook is to create a conversation without seeming to be trying to in the first place.

Thought provoking questions are great as they can spread like wild fire before you know it and can gather or create many fans towards your Fan Pages in little time with hardly any effort at all.

I still love the simplicity of Facebook and how you can keep up to date with almost anything you wish to find.

For me personally I haven't noticed any decline as Facebook seem to be keeping things fresh by enticing people to interact on a regular basis by updating things constantly.

I don't see how any adult with responsibilities could spend hours on Facebook, Twitter, etc.. I'm constantly telling my wife to get the heck off Facebook and do something more productive. Don't update or visit Facebook for a few months, and than wait to see who calls you to find out what's going on with you. Then you'll have a better idea of who your real friends are. If you recall MySpace use to be the big social network and then Facebook took it away from them. People are looking for the next big thing now and it is simply not as cool for them to be on Facebook all day anymore as their boss, their employer, their mom, their dad and even their grandmother are on there now. A lot of adults see it now as more of a professional networking site where they have to be on their best behavior at all times and not a place where they can kick back and chit chat with their buddies.

So much good posting here! Seriously!

I still sense an underlying current of frustration with this whole FB/Twitter thing. This is very good. Warriors figure things out faster than the rest of the milling crowd.

I think that business can be garnered from FB, but it's only after a considerable amount of time spent and even then it's got to be indirect. In other words, it's ultimately a place to make or keep in touch with friends and family. FB cannot be the new Life Insurance Salesman paradigm of networking.

FB has started its spiraling down to dusty death. Its IPO was the beginning of its end.

Twitter, to me (and this is just me), is the ultimate in the dumbing-down of massive-array communications. Yes, it's for TWITS.

But that's just us. ("Us" being me and whoever happens to agree with me.)

I think Facebook is just getting going. Many people may be on vacation or doing something else but Facebook is still growing internationally.

For me TIMELINE has killed facebook - they updated too often too quickly.

IN fact I hate timeline and I wish they would go back to the better wall posting version

I resisted FB for the longest time - I don't like all this "sharing" and "liking," there seems to be something compulsive about it. Like, people can't breathe unless they have updated their FB status. Give me a break!

The privacy issue is a huge problem and has turned people off, I'm sure.

The thing is, if you have an online presence with via a website, unless you do social marketing you practically don't exist. "They"don't take you seriously, meaning the public, the potential clients. You HAVE to have all those buttons on there, Twitter, Facebook, Reddit and whatnot. There seems to be no way around it, or am I wrong?

No, it was way before this. Facebook is going the myspace route pretty rapidly, and in my opinion it is only because people by nature get sick of something after so long. Call it nature.

FB, is also killing itself trying to bleed advertisers dry. Slowly killing itself.

Brant - you kill me... Twitter is for Twits. Lol.

Me too I can't see the use in it. I tried, because I figured, with so many people engaged in it professionally, not just tweeting they are standing at the checkout line buying a new ipad, there's got to be something there that's useful. But I found it to be a complete time waster.

As a relatively young man, here is my perspective as to why FB is going downhill:

    - Many of my peers have a lot of things to say that lack any substance or depth, I would have to remove everyone with an IQ under 90 for my homepage feed to be somewhat bearable
    - My parents and older members of my family have all joined FB forcing me to think twice about anything I post on there
    - Employers and potential business partners are now doing background checks on people that involve their Facebook account, forcing me to filter my output there even more so
    - FB's public IPO caught a lot of attention and a lot of people realized that THEY (the users) are the product that gives them a $100B price tag
    - FB keeps redesigning to increase conversions

All it takes is one slightly better competitor to roll around who is less about the dough and more about the user experience and it is R.I.P Facebook.

That right there pretty much covers why facebook is marginally no longer what is was, particularly the "Lack substance or depth" comment.

Quick one liners such as...."My god is it five o clock already" and "I'm off for a shower now" says something about some of the facebook users out there, and is why I rarely even bother to login anymore.

  • All the hype with facebook was the hype with my space. I remember the hype with tech stocks then the hype with real estate. Whatever people are hyped up about is GOING TO GO DOWN! That i'm 100% sure! It's always ben true and probably always will. So yes facebook is going down lets see how much till it stabilizes.

    Facebook is not losing interest!
It may be that its the summer and more and more people are outside. Or it could be that more and more people access FB on their phones now and it doesn't show them up as being on chat?

      The statistics do not lie
I'd also figure that more people would be using it in the summer anyhow

At no point in my entire life have I ever had anywhere near 250 friends whether in real life or on a website.

How do you people know so many people...and do you really *know* all of those people?

Facebook is as popular as ever, don't worry....perhaps your friends are enjoying life instead of posting what they ate for breakfast or whatever people on Facebook do all day.

I personally enjoy browsing facebook. However many dislike the lack of privacy.

Now whenever you're on other websites, their comment section will be directly tied to facebook. so if you want to make a comment, it will show up on your timeline or in your facebook feed. You have to really pay attention to what you're doing online, as to not expose your activities to everyone you know on facebook.

I can remember a couple of years back I was browsing the swimsuit section of the sports-illustrated website. (I was looking for articles of course.) However without giving it a second thought, I clicked like on a very attractive swimsuit. Needless to say that didn't go over very well with my wife and the rest of the family on facebook.

I can very much see why people who don't like their business being out there would not want to hang out on facebook.

I think it has to do with the media. You may have noticed a lot of TV shows are becoming interactive. And they don't say post about this on facebook. They say share what you think on twitter. Then they read what people are saying on twitter.

This happens on news shows and sports shows all the time. the media does not promote facebook any more like they did a few months back, but they continue to share what people are tweeting during their broadcasts.

I could be way off in my assessment but this is how it appears to me.

The teenagers still love it but for the marketers it took some time to realize that this is not the best option for marketing.

Unless facebook comes up with something revolutionary new the trend of decline will continue and we may see another new social idea to rise up

Timeline is taking forever to load on pages. I think it's killing user experience. I've noticed Facebook engagement is wayy down. I don't think there is one simple reason though. Many people are shifting to using Facebook on mobile so less people may be checking newsfeeds. Who really knows!

I haven't get a clue as to why they do what they do. Facebook that is. The money has destroyed people' favorite past time. I like IM but what I see on Facebook is ridiculous. I don't go there because I am smacked around by all the garbage ads.

I log in to check on my fan page. I can't even see my friends post with all those useless pics allowing people to share a feeling without having to think for themselves or type.

It's a shame it was kinda fun for 5 years.

Some of my friends lost their interest too. they check their accounts rarely, do not not even post any updates too.

Some people already find Facebook tiring to keep. even with mobile apps available now for Facebook. I notice this when they changed the interface. It made people a bit uninterested to check there accounts after the changes Facebook has been making. Probably because after the interface changed a lot of people find it hard to navigate around Facebook anymore.

Maybe people are finally realizing that Facebook is kind of lame. Plus, you give up a lot of your private information for really nothing of measurable value in return.

Then there's Twitter, which simply rocks.

        Yes!

I don't use twitter for marketing, because I think 99.999% of people who do are doing it totally wrong.

But for entertainment...I am totally addicted and 2 months ago I hated it. I don't tweet myself, but found some great "Twitter comedians" that are brilliant.

Twitter is so much more fun than Facebook.

I've noticed a decline as well but not that suprised. I lost interst in FB a long time ago. I have to admit I've used to be on it almost all the time where making comments on the walls was actually fun. Then one day when logged on out of the blue, I found all these new apps and updates and I had no clue what was going on. Plus, people are making useless posts/comments now that I don't even care about and most that I've read should not have been made public to begin with..unless they have no life and just wants the attention.

This may be going off topic a bit but I don't know if you guys read about the father from NC shooting his daughter's laptop because she was complaining about her father making her do chores. I guess this is what FB is all about now and seems what most are doing now..

So pretty much I feel that FB just went downhill.
