Autoresponder Tips - What should go in my first response to a new subscriber

Hi All,

I've bought some content that has a free bonus report people sign up for, plus 11 autoresponder follow up emails to set up for some mailing lists I'm starting up.

The toolkit has some suggested follow up emails, but none for the very first one - and guess where I am stuck - that 1st post-signup contact.

I am looking for some tips about what to add in, so I don't screw up monumentally

So far the text is:

--------------------------------------------
Subject: Here is the free information you requested

Body: Thanks for signing up to the XYZ mailing list.

Attached is your free information about [topic].

Don't forget to take a look at the [topic] articles on our website -where you'll find lots more useful free hints and tips.

Thanks,

The [website name] team.

---------------------------------------------

Then I would email them using Aweber after 7 days with the next follow up, then every 30 days with the remainder.

All the article pages contain a buynow promo for the full guides I am selling.

If they do buy, how to I put the "buyers" on a different autoresponder list - these pre-made follow-ups are more about getting people to buy the full report, and it will annoy customers I think.

(buyers will be by paypal or clickbank, not decided just yet).

Great question. I was going to explain what I do for my clients in great detail, then I thought, "Aw heck with it--just give 'em the template."

So here's something I've used with great success.

    -------------------------------

    SUBJECT: You Did It, FIRSTNAME!

Hey there, it's YOURNAME from YOURURL, and I want to congratulate you on your decision to SOLVE THEIR WANTS/NEEDS/DESIRE/PROBLEM HERE.

You've taken the first step towards WHAT YOU PROMISED THEY WOULD GET WITH YOUR REPORT. And I applaud you for it--way to go!

Over the few weeks, I'll be telling you more about YOUR PRODUCT HERE, including some amazing things you probably don't know about this extraordinary WHATEVER IT IS, including...

    BULLET POINT ONE
    BULLET POINT TWO
    BULLET POINT THREE
    BULLET POINT FOUR

And much more. But before we get started, there's something important
I need to pass along first...

Please make sure you whitelist this email address.
This means you give permission for my emails to come directly into your inbox (instead of hitting your spam folder).

Your email provider should have clear, easy to follow
directions on how to do this--it usually only takes a
couple of clicks--but it's very important.

Can you do that for me please?

Good--now look for another message to come within the next day or so. Until then, thanks again for checking out the PRODUCT HERE, and I'll be talking with you soon.

    YOUR NAME

P.S. Again, I can't stress enough how important it is
for you to whitelist this email address...

Because I'm going to be sending you some very crucial
information on how this program can virtually INSERT MAJOR BENEFIT HERE.

Seriously--and if these messages get snagged by a spam filter, you'll probably never see them.

So please whitelist this address right away, okay? I'd
hate to see you miss out on anything...

    ----------------------------------

That's the basics. You can massage and rework all you want. But this simple approach seems to get people excited about what's coming (and get your name whiteliested too).

Speaking of whitelisting, does anybody know of a site you can link to in an email like this that lists simple instructions for whitelisting with the major email providers? Gotta be something out there.

Anyway, most of the stuff you need to fill in can be pulled directly from your sales letter. Just remember--they're HOT right now. So feed the fire by pumping up the fact that they just took the first step towards solving their want/need/desire/problem.

And if you want more, I got a free video in the sig below (cheap plug).

    Jay White

P.S. Incidentally, I would send this one out immediately, your first (and strongest) message of your AR series out the next day, then one every 3 days afterwards. Don't wait 7 days or 30 days...keep 'em cookin!

    Good luck!

Thanks, Jay, for sharing directly. I hope people realize that's no small thing since many try to guard such information.

MsAngry, go signup (or re-sign) with a few well known successful marketers and see what they do... duplicate, then innovate.

I guess I go about it a little differently.

First of all, I keep my email messages as short as possible. I rarely read one of those long email messages and I figure more other people don't either.

Instead, I write a quick sentence or two along with the link. The actual giveaway is where I try to build rapport with my reader... not in the email. If my teaser sentences in the email are strong, then they'll click on the link and be interested in what's being offered. After all, the click through is what I'm after.

In addition, I never write anything remotely resembling a sales pitch in email... You'll get far fewer click throughs if you sell in your email.

Lastly, I send out automated messages for at least the first few days after an initial signup for a freebie. The general idea might look something like this:
      Day 1: Here's your report
Day 2: Did you get your report? If not, here's the link again.
Day 3: Do you have any questions about the report?
Day 6: You've had time to read the report, what do you think?
Day 8: Offer some supplementary information (free) related to report like an article. (Of course there is a product pitch hidden in this supplement)
Then I dwindle my email down to at least once per week... two or three times per week if I can find enough stuff to send out.

Admittedly, I am much more of a "soft-seller." I don't like to out-and-out pitch to people. I prefer to pre-sell them and lead them down the garden path to where they feel like they really need whatever I'm promoting.

I realize a lot of others here have a very different approach, but that's how I do it!

      Best Wishes,
      Arvada Yates

Doh! Of course, review and clone some good examples

And thanks for that cracking example above!

It doesn't help that I personally hate any overt selling techniques/pushy newsletters etc - my personal views tend to hamper getting the IM message right

Every 3 days! Crikey, if I were a user I would have clicked the unsubscribe or mark as spam button by then - argh - I guess I keep sending them out and adjust the time interval to maximise subscriber retention...

Thanks very much for the advice - three cheers for the warrior forum again!!
