hey guys, just wanted to ask what operating system everybody uses? personally i use ubuntu and i know the whole operating system inside out, upside down, have been using it years because:

-its fee
-its more secure than windows
-free updates
-all the software is free
-excellent support forums available

and a few other reasons

personally i cant stand windows and will never use it again

Win XP Pro on the desktop and Win Vista Home on the laptop.

I'm not a big fan of Windows but it gets the job done for me and it isn't worth my time to switch to a new OS and have to deal with finding programs to do what I already have set up on my existing OS's.

I have xp on one old computer that was a great work horse but I
haven't used it for a long time. I'm using Vista ultimate on a slightly
    quirky HP.

I was interested in running Ubuntu. Most of what I do on the puter
is just code and text, so thought that Ubuntu should have no
problems with it. I got the install disk and it had serious problems
running on both machines. I didn't even get to the doing any work
    part.

I popped the Ubuntu disk out and went back to Vista, which
incidentally has never had a virus or malware problem. So just to
throw in something you don't hear very often, thank you Bill Gates.

    best wishes, lloyd

lol @ more secure than windows

I've got more exploits for xNIX variants these days than windows.

Tell the truth, it's free. Windows isn't.

When the engine under the X Windows GUI stops working, and you're left to code shell on your own, who do you turn to for support? The open source community? LOL good luck getting your forum question answered in time to get productive in a reasonable timeframe.

You simply cannot be a marketer and not appreciate Microsoft. Bill Gates is the consummate marketer. He also built one of the wealthiest companies in the world for a reason -- something that Red Hat, mySQL and Zend combined cannot compare with to this very day.

Ok, I'm a Mac guy through and through. I'm just going to say from experience though, there is little to no good SEO software available for OSX. Any of you software developers out there who could make some decent RSS submition software... social bookmarking automation software... or anything similar could make a killing. You'd literally be taking on a virgin market! I'd be first in line to buy (or hopefully beta test) the software. If you need a guiney pig, I'm your man!

If you don't have access to a home PC but have broadband, it's not too expensive to set yourself up with a virtual computer somewhere else that you can store all the files on and use. It's nice too because you can access the virtual computer from anything and anywhere there is an internet connection. So you can do your IM work... even at work.

Xp Pro ..... Used 98SE for years before I got hold of a copy of XP Pro.

Loved 98SE but Microsoft no longer supported it (BOO MS hissssss!)

Have used vista at local college - don't like it at all.

MS dropped Longhorn, coz it was too damn good.
(Longhorn = cross between Linux & Windows... brilliant it was)

Now they are working on a replacement for Vista.

Probably due to all the complaints they got coz it was a crap system!

Actually, I never heard of ubuntu

But if it works for you, then go for it.

If it crashes, then, I suppose you can just re-install it again and off you go!

Most software that is helpful to use with MS systems is made to work on MS because ti is the most widely used OS.

How many other applications are designed for use in conjunction with ubuntu?

There's a ton of great stuff in Vista if you know what you're doing.

Speech recognition ROCKS! Better than Dragon NS. No article marketer should be without it.

I can dictate straight into Word 2007 with a high level of accuracy after training the system. Then use MetaWebLog to post directly from word to my blogs (which are RSS syndicated across multiple blog sites)

In effect, nearly dictating text straight into a website.

A couple other small things Vista is extremely good at. The search on xp was just about useless and I used to download Copernic for that. With Vista it really is the best I've ever used.

The snipping tool is such a good screen capture device. Won't be downloading anything for that either.

Thanks for the info about speech recognition. I'll be giving it a try soon and was wondering about how it compared to dns.

Vista x64 ultimate on my laptop.... and I love it! I cant understand why so many others bash vista. I very seldom have crashes or have trouble with drivers and installing apps. I did have problems installing hotspot shield with the TAP/TUN VPN drivers recently but i found a work around on Google to still make it work.

The complete system backup has never failed me and I been using it for 2 years hardcore. Unlike Symantec ghost for with windows xp which i never felt safe with backing up my system with because it would always get fubared.

Vista has been a pain in the ass for me. I had to download several plugins just for opening a Word document. Surely you would have thought they would have included that. I shouldn't have to wait an hour just to open another Microsoft document.

As an IT manager I always use the right tool for the right job. Would I ever run an edge router/firewall/or DNS server on Windows? Nope - I'd either use a special purpose appliance or a system running Linux. I won't get into the religious wars on which flavor - its like debating which editor is the best for development - (which we all know is emacs) or web development (Vi)...

Right now I personally run Windows XP Pro on my desktop and laptop. My personal local server is a quad proc server running Fedora.

My personal company's server is running Red Hat Enterprise.

My day job company has 3 Windoz 2003 servers, one 2000 advance server, 3 XP machines, and a RHEL server.

In your personal life the choice is yours - heck I even hear some folks actually use a Mac! I use an emulator to run the only Mac App I have - a game called Strategic conquest.

In your professional life - you should be mature enough to use the right tool for the right job.

    peace,

It makes more sense. It sounds entirely reasonable, to me.

I use Windows XP. In theory it's free, but in reality, when I bought my latest desktop and latest laptop, it cost a little something extra to get both of them with XP rather than with Vista. Probably money well spent, I think.

And this is first you've heard of ubuntu? You are NOT into computers enough to even worry about it. If you want to know more about *nix such as ubuntu, ask on an UBUNTU forum.

Up until July, I was using Windows XP Home on my laptop, and XP Pro on my desktop. I had vowed never to use another (newer) Windows OS again after seeing how crappy Vista was on friends' computers. I thought XP was as good as it was going to get as far as Microsoft's operating systems go.

Then I bought a new laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad X201) which I now use in place of both the aforementioned computers, and this came pre-installed with Windows 7 Professional.

"Wow", is all I can say. What an improvement.

It's been as stable as stonehenge, as quick as Wile E. Coyote, and I haven't had a single issue so far. And, aesthetically, I actually prefer it to Windows XP, now.

Glad I didn't go with a Macbook (just for Mac OS) after all.

It's astounding, isn't it, that so many people will make decisions to use a different OS, wear different clothing, or else do something different for no real practical reason - just to improve their social appeal.

I had a friend who switched from being a "life-long" Windows user to being a Linux user (don't recall what "flavour") for no other reason other than he felt it'd better help him blend in to his occupational stereotype. He suffered a lot of inconvenience and inhibited his own business productivity because of this.

Some people really need to get a grip, and just use what works best for them.
