Who uses Joomla and why?

Hi All,

I am considering building a web site using Joomla - though it's been a long time since I read-up on it. I wondered if many people use it to build sites and why they do so? I seem to recall that it was good for adding simple extensions that could create surveys and the like.

Another thing. I believe that Joomla pages are php, rather than HTML. Does this cause problems with them getting spidered by Google?

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

    This is not true.

PHP is a server side scripting language. In other words, google or anyone else can not see Joomla's PHP code. All web pages are HTML/CSS. Joomla is just a content management system that uses PHP to store and manipulate content, then generate the HTML code that a browser (and google) see.

So no, the fact that Joomla uses PHP has no effect on google's indexing.

I think you can see from the (lack of) responses that not a lot of people use it in comparison to WP.

Just out of curiosity, why would you want to use it?

Why do you use Wordpress compared to Joomla?

Why is Wordpress good and Joomla is bad according to you?

Although, the comparison is not exactly joomla vs. wordpress.

So why post it on a Joomla vs WordPress post if the Proprietary is not Joomla? Joomla is NOT Proprietary, it's Open Source, just as WordPress is.

Please go to Open Source CMS Demos & Information - OpenSourceCMS to read the comparisons by users.

I can setup a Joomla site twice as fast as I can setup a WordPress site.

Joomla would compare more than favourably with all of the WordPress features, that you've listed.

What's wrong with that? Like I said, I got that somewhere and just thought of sharing. Just want to show some details about wordpress.

I can setup a Joomla site twice as fast as I can setup a WordPress site.
Well, with fantastico, just few minutes if not seconds, Wordress is already installed. Then using great themes from themeforest, elegant themes, headway theme, etc, I can complete the site as fast as I could.

Anyway, as you have mentioned you can setup a Joomla site twice as fast as you can setup a WordPress site, then good for you..
            BRAVO!

Just out of curiosity, are there JOomla themes/skins/templates which are responsive?

Lastly, it really depends on what type of site/page you are going to create. If you are going to create squeeze pages, then why use Joomla where there are lots of good squeeze page wp themes available?

Also, user friendliness should be taken into account.

Answer - Just migrated an old Joomla site to the latest version of Joomla/Virtuemart and a cool responsive theme.

              -----> OverstockFabric(dot)com/B

              USER..... OSF
              PASS..... 12345

Not live yet, customer is reviewing, so hiding from search engines. Then will be at root in a few days.

              -----> OverstockFabric(dot)com

The old version is there at the time of this writing.

Joomla/Virtuemart is superior for store/template integration when you have more than 20-30 products. In this case, 300+ and growing, we could not advise Wordpress, must be either OpenCart or Joomla/Virtuemart, but needed to be upgraded from the free install we did 3 years ago.

Wordpress is superior for SEO, so for this and other clients, BOTH, will be used. WP for marketing, and Joomla/Virtuemart for powerful store functions integrated with CMS. Another option is OpenCart, and WP, but then you have two themes to figure, and integration. So OpenCart is better for 1000+ products. Where the store is the main point of the business. But, even then Joomla/VM is maybe a better choice for flexible options in one CMS package with VM added.

Highly recommend all three, WP, Joomla/VM and Opencart. But know where your going before you choose. Then you can make a professional decision.

              Best wishes with your project.

              Aloha, AR

I will say this much though Joomla was easier to use than wordpress, but I guess it all depends on who is using it. If you are a more techie intellectual type then you will find Joomla easier to use. If you are on the other side of the coin and new to web development and all then you will probably find wordpress easier to use. it's still amazes me how wp can make computer folks look like dummies until they get the hang of it all. what can i say society definitely is changing lol

            It's horses for courses.

As others have said, WP is great for blogs, but Joomla is great for serious stuff. I'm a serious Web developer of 15 years and use each where applicable.

I use Joomla for sites where I need an amazingly good Business Directory plugin or an Accommodation Booking system. I haven't found a good WP plugin for either of those.

WP is Mickey Mouse in terms of security and I trust it zero and wouldn't dream of using WP for a client. I only use WP for my own sites, never for clients and if you don't have clients who depend on security and reliabilty then WP is fine. I know people who have lost everything with WP just from changing a theme. WP is for amateurs, I think, where Joomla has grown out of Mambo, whose credentials are legend.

Sure, Joomla has a steepish learning curve, but then so does a 26 gear truck, where WP is like a 4-speed sedan, good for those who are not serious drivers and need something simple to learn to drive!

For a shopping cart system I wouldn't use either. I go for Opencart every time.

For a typical, simple, static Web site, then I go for HTML every time. Lightweight, fast-loading even on dialup (yes, many people still have dialup!), reliable, keep a local copy on your computer, tweak it exactly as a client wants it, easily make it responsive/adaptive for all devices and screen sizes.

I built several nice sites using Joomla. I built them to flip them. They were so awesome looking they sold well. Problem was that after the buyers bought them, they didn't have a clue how to manage them. Support was horrible. In fact, since I had never used Joomla before, there was a very large learning curve to make decent Joomla sites. I'll never use it again, as I don't want the support issues if I sell it.

Joomla is not as easy to use as Wordpress. The learning curve is definitely steeper. With that said, it's still a great CMS if you take the time to learn how to build and manage sites with it.

I have used both Joomla and Wordpress. I have no idea why people use wordpress or claim it is easier to use. I personally feel it is difficult to navigate which slows me down. In my opiniom Joomla 2.5 is great. I have built 40 sites with it.

If you're looking for a CMS, look into Concrete. Joomla is a true CMS, where Wodpress is not. Wordpress is a "blogging" platform that has been manipulated into being a CMS.

The main problem with Wordpress is that it's used by so many people that it's pretty much the first to be exploited.

    • I used WP to build sites ages ago but then I got into Joomla as it is more of a true CMS as opposed to a blogging platform like WP.

In recent years I have returned to WP because for a number of reasons. WP just seems easier to work with and is better over than Joomla IMO.

WP is much more than a blogging platform in many respects it is more of a CMS than Joomla is.

I have used joomla, as far as building a joomla site goes, its pretty easy, I can get super customized designs for $50, I can then get the designs created into a joomla template for $50, depending on how complex the site needs to be takes around 1 -3 hours for content/navigation p.s o desk is your best friend. I use 1.5 not 2.5, 1.5 has less bugs when it comes to the modules.

I love both Wordpress and Joomla...and I sometimes use both in one project.
Over the years they have become so similar that you can do most anything with both... but if you don't want to dig too deep (or code yourself)... IMHO Joomla still lacks the easy blogging features Wordpress offers...and Wordpress still lacks the easy CMS features.

The number of Joomla extensions that aim at the needs of offline businesses is huge and that's the reason I often use it for customer projects. Wordpress probably has more plugins to offer that serve IM needs.

I learned joomla before wordpress learned alot about security from joomla.

when i hit the warrior forum and did research i learned that wordpress is the standard and you can basically do most stuff on it for free. there are plugins for everything and its more geared towards affiliate and internet marketing.

as far as joomla is concerned for much of the stuff you can do for free on wordpress you will pay from 20 to 40 bucks a pop or more. think about it.
i don't even know if joomla even has an affiliate theme. like the other poster said

I've built dozens of sites using Joomla. Why us it? Functionality.

Joomla has some components that are much better than the Wordpress alternatives, one example that springs to mind, Virtuemart for ECommerce.

Of course though, it all depends on what you need. There are hundreds of open source CMS' at your disposal so use the one that is best for that particular project.

I actually think Joomla is more intuitive in it's workings, however it has layers of settings that can drive a newbie website builder crazy. I would use it exclusively except for the fact that it's plugins are very basic or non-existent compared to Wordpress. Joomla is still a dinosaur with SEO yet.

Ok, lots of incorrect "facts" being thrown about here.

Wordpress - Easy to use, often used by people who do not program at all and plan to use plug ins for everything. The sites are often to display information or complete basic functions centered around specific plugins.

Joomla - Moderate in being easy to use. Often used by people who understand at least basic concepts in dynamic php. Plugins abound but are not as widely available as Wordpress. But what is lacking in pre made expansion modules, is made up for in the vastly superior ability to easily be customized with code.

Drupal - Difficult in being "easy to use" only because coding knowledge is practically a requirement. This CMS doesn't hold your hand through everything. There are plugins however an even smaller library than Joomla.

These three CMS options are related, not in being forked or anything like that but they are all php CMS systems using a database as a backbone and include the ability to add in plugins or modules. Believe it or not, there are many other CMS out there that are substantially different.

Joomla & Drupal are used for College edu sites, car manufacturers, and many other BIG name sites. Wordpress is often not used for anything like this due to its inability to easily complete advanced functions or out of the ordinary customization.

They are all good, my personal favorite is Joomla but I have been known to throw up Wordpress here and there. I do plan to try out Drupal eventually since I am significantly better at coding than I was in the past.

I am also a Joomla fan and believe it is far more flexible than WordPress. There are a number of reasons we use it pretty much exclusively for our client sites.

Wanted to comment on two different comments made in places on this thread.
    - Squeeze or Landing Pages. Probably the primary reason we use Joomla for our clients. Due to the flexibility we can format them pretty much anyway we like and on our testing outperform the many "cookie cutter" type themes available on WordPress (even the paid ones!)
    - SEO - out the box I will agree that the SEO is not as good as WordPress. However with various extensions and some custom ways that we setup our sites we have once again been able to get fantastic results that I believe outperform WordPress.

Now, we have been using Joomla for about 4 years and are web developers so keep that in mind. I really like have a flexible platform that is popular enough that there are thousands of extensions, technical expertise that is easily available if we need it (oDesk, eLance, etc.) and has a footprint that is different from what the majority of people are using.

If you have to ask this question, I would recommend Wordpress for you. Joomla has more functions and features but has a steeper learning curve. It used to be that Joomla had more functions/features back in the days but recent Wordpress plugins and advanced templates have caught up to offer the same if not more functionality. For the untrained beginner, I recommend to just go WP.

Both frameworks are great and ultimately it's the user's preference based on comfort and proficiency.

As for simplicity, the absolute novice will get no where without the help of a tech savvy personnel to configure the system to the specs needed, then the owner only has to click new and post. Hence the term Content Manager, and in that sense they are both simple.

End user's ease of use is always going to be based on their cognitive abilities. Both systems seem easy to us as techs but quite daunting to a new site publisher who simply just does not understand what Add Media means or what to Link To or what is a Featured Image and especially and most commonly asked 'what is a shortcode?'. They just have to be taught and for either system, once we have instructed them on the basics that they need to do, they are off and publishing.

Our default choice is Joomla primarily because we have developed multiple extensions and templates for that framework and have invested significant time in learning its programmatic functions, but we also know Wordpress very well. When a client requests a website, we assess their needs and provide them with options and benefits of either system and even give them access to demo administration area of both which have been configured to the most common usages ie: Blogging, Photo Gallery, Video Gallery, Shopping Cart, Forum and the supporting modules/sidebars which enhances global content display. Ultimately new site owners still have to be guided initially.

The argument on which system is more SEO friendly is up to the developers configuration. In the bare bone state of each, search engines will find and cache the posts with no bias. To get to the superior SEO configs, one has to employ plugins and many are available for both, but again, tech savvy is required to get only the useful plugs.

As for security, both systems in their native state are secure, trouble begins with extensions as those, being developed by third parties, can be vulnerable and even outright malicious so this is where knowledge and research are required.

WP is certainly more commonly used but that is mainly because all hosting providers list it in their One-Click installer as Blog and Joomla is listed as CMS, which to many lay persons is unknown so they just click WP. We have had to clean up many WP sites for clients who had used the easy installer but then in trying to make it like a CMS, they installed just about all the plugins and templates that matched their search terms and then chaos ensued.

Just as there is user preference for Windows or Mac, IE, Chrome or Firefox, iPhone, Android or Blackberry, the choice for a website management system is just what you are comfortable using and can be productive and proficient.

Joomla scales better than WordPress. Drupal scales best of the three.

I started with Joomla, and have also worked with WordPress because of its popularity. Joomla for me is a much better laid out CMS.. I like the top menu rather than the side menu by ten fold. Stuff also seems to be much more consistent in Joomla and I dont spend nearly as much time learning the template than I do in Wordpress.

I also find the way Joomla has their Extension Section and the availability of extensions that work with all templates with no customization needed much more seamless. ( an extension is the equivalent of a WordPress plugin)

I think the main reason Wordpress is so popular over Joomla is because they started as a blogging platform with the option of a free website with the .wordpress extension. Surprisingly though Joomla has been around alot longer than Wordpress originally called Mambo which was founded back in year 2000. Comapred to Wordpress which was started in 2005.
