Competitors? will this benefit me?

I have a couple website ideas a question I have is about URL redirects..how does it work

say for example for my fitness e-book there was a competitior or someone who is really popular...joe smith for example and he had a website www.fitnessbook.com for example and we both have totally different content

and i had an option to get www.fitnessbook.ca would it be worth it or www.joesmithfitness.com and then a redirect to my website .. will this benefit myself in any way?

Like if someone did a google search will it help bring my fitness site before others or something along those lines...

Thanks

It kind of was a bad question... not the question itself but the wording. Why do you want to use a redirect exactly?

Is it because you like the domain name better then what you have?

Is it an already established domain that is already getting traffic?

I get what you mean... You are asking about sort of trying to pass yourself off as fitnessbook.com to sell your product if the .com product is really popular product.

The answer really depends on how you are advertising... If you are using PPC and want to utilize that other product name as a keyword in your campaign, then yes, it could be worth your while to increase your ad relevance for that keyword by purchasing the .ca domain and listing that as your "visual link" at the end of the ad.

In any other form of marketing I can think of however, you should really try to brand YOUR product domain... not piggyback off your competitor.

I think it is called cybersquatting ... intentionally picking a domain name that is confusingly similar to another brand.

In the long run I don't think it is a good idea.

Firstly, you are spending your time and money building HIS brand instead of yours.
If anyone sees your link that is similar to the other site, it could remind them of the other brand instead of reinforcing yours. If they are specifically looking for HIS site and they mistakenly click yours they will still think this is not XYZ site and they could feel tricked.

Plus, if they at some point Trademark their name, they could take action against you for infringing on their trademark.

I think you'd be better off building your own brand.

Plus, with redirects, there's that whole "Duplicate Content" argument to consider.
