How does Bit Torrent work

I am assisting an author who is not 100% computer literate
but who is concerned to see that ebook versions of his work
are being pirated via bit torrent etc. He wants to introduce
"alternative" versions of his books into the pirate world but
does not fully understand how bit torrent works. Does anyone
have any advice and/or can anyone assist in the uploading of
the book as described? This of course will be done with the
full consent of the copyright holder.

    Just upload the book to a public tracker site, with the proper name, maybe add [Original] to the title since it really is the original.

    Bit torrent is just a program that facilitates peer to peer sharing of files. Without a tracker it doesn't do anything.
