Why do Warriors still use Paypal

As I read the thousands of Paypal sucks threads - It begs the question -- why do marketers continue to use Paypal as a payment processor for a WSO?

The common response I hear (and I actually even heard a Paypal rep say this on a recording) is that Paypal does not want to deal with the IM community.

Several warriors seem to be either getting their accounts either limited or closed completely, so it seems to me like people are playing Russian Roulette with their business.

I guess I am asking because if I decide to do a WSO one day - why would I consider Paypal. Yea the process is simple and you will receive your money faster but is it worth the hassle?

What do you think? Should the warrior forum owners encourage us members to consider other payment processors. Maybe WF should have its own payment processor. I don't know - just a little confused. Please let me know your thoughts on this!

I've been using Paypal since they first launched, and have never had an issue. The bottom line is that it has a low barrier to entry, lots of people use it, and lots of people trust it. Hell, Allen Says uses Paypal, and I would hazard a guess that he's running six figures a month through his account.

I'm not saying it's the best solution, but as long as you abide by their terms, I don't see a good reason not to use them.

    The main reason is customers.

If I go to a sales page that doesn't take PayPal, I don't buy.

My understanding is that with the WarriorPlus (ran by Mike) being separate from the Warrior Forum (ran by Allen) once respective payments have been made, they're out of it (WarRoom, WSO, any bumps, WSO affiliate program). So there's no "benefit" for them to encourage anyone to use Paypal, Alert Pay, 2checkout or whohaveya.

Everyone here is running his or her own business and Mike nor Allen are "partners" in that business. So if someone loses all their money due to PayPal closing their account, it's not going to hurt Mike or Allen any. Just as everyone should investigate any business they're looking at, they should explore all payment options. Having multiple options and not having all your "eggs" in one basket is good as well. I know some have had their 2Checkout accounts closed even though they had a stellar history. But that's up to the seller & what options they set up.

The majority of folks have PayPal accounts and feel safer with that and not just giving any Joe Blow out there, their credit card number. And there are many Warriors in non-PayPal countries who would love to purchase WSOs but can't. But that's up to the seller who they choose to use & who they choose to allow to purchase their product in a sense.

Not having sold a WSO I don't know all the ins and outs of that process. I know with WSOPro/Paypal you can track certain information. I don't know if you can link another processor & have the same information available. So that might be part of it as well.

I've been using pay-pal for payment processing for about 6 months I haven't had any problems with yet. Personally as a customer I have not bought products because they didn't offer a pay-pal button simply because I don't want my credit card number being captured in thousands of databases.

Even if you wanted to use another payment processor for a WSO, could you with WarriorPlus or JVZoo or another affiliate marketplace? As far as I know you can't, they ask for your Paypal email address when you sign up. And a WSO without affiliates probably won't do that well, or at least not as well as you could do if you had affiliates promoting for you.

And also as a customer, I don't want to buy a product if there is no PayPal button there. The reason is simple, I don't have another payment processor account and I don't want to use my credit card for security reason.

You are talking about a VERY small number of sellers on this forum who have had an issue with their account.

In a lot of cases those problems occurred because people were not adhering to the terms of service OR they had an abnormally high spike in their account activity, at which time their account was manually reviewed and Paypal found something they did not like. I have seen several people complain about problems with Paypal and after taking a quick look at their offer, it was perfectly obvious to me why they had those problems. High income claims, ridiculous hype. Yes, that's all stuff Paypal do not want to be associated with. But you'll find no one wants to be associated with that crap nowadays -- it's not just Paypal.

Play by the rules and, for the most part, you will be fine. There are way way more people in this forum who have been using Paypal successfully with no problems whatsoever. The problem is you only ever hear from those having issues so it makes the problem seem a lot bigger than it really is.

I'm using paypal, my account was hacked and money was sent to 4 different "sellers".

within two weeks paypal smacked that ***** up and gave me my money back.

I'm still using paypal because they have a great support team, especially in israel.

and because most buyers are comfortable with paypal, most affiliate programs are comfortable with paypal And basically everyone are lovin' paypal.

before you are about to recieve the "thousands" of dollars in sales, inform paypal that you are launching a product and that you are expecting lots of transactions...

Big Mike's correct, most, if not all, hate messages are emotion-based instead of being fact-based. If you need to know the truth and satisfy your own self, you got to do your own research, quantify the facts, and make your own understanding based on what you've gathered.

Paypal definitely has the lowest barrier to entry.. most people have a Paypal account, you don't need to get an SSL certificate for your site (although it's still not a bad idea for any kind of membership site to prevent session hijacking and similar attacks), etc.

I agree that most people who play by Paypal's rules have nothing to fear, but I know for a fact that Paypal can on rare occasions be pretty arbitrary about freezing or limiting accounts. I know a pretty popular opensource project that was accepting donations via Paypal, following the rules 100% and had 0 disputes or refunds and their account was frozen with a couple thousand dollars in it.

As far as alternatives.. if you're willing and able to get an SSL certificate, I personally like Stripe. It's not quite as easy as putting a Paypal button on your site, but it isn't much more difficult than writing a Paypal IPN script. Credit card info isn't stored on your server (in fact, it's never sent to your server), which makes PCI compliance a lot easier than processing the cards yourself, but without an SSL certificate you get those scary "mixed content" warnings in most browsers.

Probably because the ratio of refunds to sales coming in is a very, very low percentage. There isn't really anything to scrutinize if the refunds are 1/100th of a percent of the sales coming in, is there?

One thing *I* personally appreciate about Paypal is how secure their Debit/Mastercard is. I guarantee, no one is going to get my card and go on a spending spree without it being blocked pretty quickly by Paypal. As a matter of course, Paypal blocks a debit card when there is "too much" activity on it in a short amount of time. They will then call and go through all the recent transactions to make sure they were authorized. I had someone use my number (that they apparently got offline from some site I bought something from) to purchase a $128 teacher's course from Amazon. Paypal got me all that money back. I'm pretty satisfied with Paypal.

Not to emotion the sheer volume of sales they are doing. If you were processing hundreds of thousands, even millions of dollars each year, Paypal are going to do their best to work WITH you also.

But as the poster above said, the amount of refunds compared to total sales would not be anything out of the ordinary.

Exactly. PayPal isn't out head hunting and hoping to lock up the big seller's money for 180 days. They want those who are bringing in volume to continue to bring in volume, as long as it's within their rules. It's a win-win situation when everyone does what they are supposed to.

Have there been cases where they probably f***ed up? It wouldn't surprise me in the least, but when I see a thread about how someone's account got locked and PayPal is evil, my first thought is usually "huh, wonder which rule this one broke."

People are always moaning about paypal and it's even getting to the point where they are getting 'scared' to use it.

Like Will said above, not many sellers from the forum have actually had a problem with them - maybe 1% or something (That's a guess) and even from that 1%, many get to use their accounts again.

But like any business, Paypal has terms and if you break them they are gonna' chuck your ass - if someone was mis-using your business, would you chuck them?

People give Paypal a hard time when they are banned, but Paypal do have legit reasons for doing so, which is why the have T&C's - so people follow their rules. If you break those rules, of course they're going to want you gone.

If you use your account legally you have nothing to afraid about. Many marketers use PayPal without any problem.
The main reason of choosing PayPal and not any other payment processor is that most people use it. So you have less chances to loose a customer because he cannot pay with your method.

And especially in the Warrior Forum (for people selling WSO's and services) there are many people who are unable and/or unwilling to pay in other ways.

Nobody wants to be the fruit and vegetable seller standing at his market stall in the middle of the Chicago fruit and vegetable market explaining apologetically to customers "No, sorry, I don't take US dollars", because those traders don't earn as much.

It's also probably a good idea to be able to take payments in at least one other way too, both to give customers a choice and to be ready for accidents/problems, "just in case".

Hundreds of us here have heard that recorded call, if it's the very well-known one I'm thinking of, and you've actually slightly but significantly misrepresented what the PayPal rep says in it. That was what you (and many others, admittedly) thought he meant, not what he actually said.

    Interesting question.

As many have pointed out the main reasons are:

    1. Paypal is widely-accepted as a standard for on-line transactions. (which means customer trust and compatibility)

    2. For all it's faults, PayPal is good at what it does. Not perfect, but for many - good enough.

    3. The alternatives are few and costly.

For example @stevenh512 mentioned PCI compliance and SSL.

The later is not a option by itself, as it still requires 3rd party solution. As for PCI compliance, this is not an easy task at all as it requires you to meet numerous DDS standards as described here: PCI DDS standards & procedures

Most of these are traditionally "out-of-reach" for many SMB sites and only recently some advances were made to help smaller vendors achieve PCI compliance. For example: demands made by dreaded Section 6.6 which calls for Web Application Firewall installation (an expensive process) were resolved by implementation of shared PCI compliant Cloud WAF that takes the cost down from "several thousand" to "several dozen" bucks.

Still, for most Small sites PayPal (or other 3rd party vendors) will remain the only solution, at least until we`ll witness a rise of another, more cost-effective, way for independent handling of on-line transactions.

the reason maybe is that the number of people who still trust paypal outweighs the number of people who hates it. The truth is that most consumers prefer paypal rather than just giving away their credit card info online. How could you go on targeting thousand customers when you cannot offer them the mode of payment they prefer?... simple plain and easy... go by the rules, no reason to fear your account getting frozen.

After my biz picked up some, I started using a merchant account for direct CC acceptance. I offer both options since some will only make a purchase one way or the other.

The only issues I've had with PayPal all resulted from returns. Paypal needs to cover potential losses so they hold cash in an account for a period of time especially if there has been a high return or refund request rate.

One company I was working at was running 6 figures through PayPal monthly; however, the returns were high and they would hold 10% of the funds to account for the returns. It amounted to about $50 - $80k per month.

I've also been using PayPal for several years. The one problem I had with them was when I'd first set up my account. I hadn't intended to use it as a payment processing gateway, but for web design payment as some of my clients requested it.

Then I launched my online business/got into affiliate marketing and began receiving large returns. That sudden influx of money alerted PayPal, they froze my account temporarily, and a representative gave me a phone call--I'd indicated that my avg. monthly transactions would be ~$XXXX and when more started coming in, it threw a flag on the play--but it was all sorted in less than 24 hours. No harm, no foul.

And I also remember a few times when I've traveled abroad and I receive a phone call from PayPal asking about strange transactions to ensure that my account wasn't hijacked or my card stolen. To me, that's darn fine service...and built-in peace of mind.

PayPal is convenient for both sellers and buyers and as long as you abide by their terms, you won't have a problem with them. The Warriors still using PayPal for their WSOs are the ones who haven't had any problems with the service and therefore have no reason to cry and moan about their accounts being suspended or closed.

  • Even if you have had a great relationship with PayPal for the long term, it is always advisable to have at least one backup payment processor ready to go in case of any unexpected issues. It is a good idea that you set up an account with another payment processor prior to needing them. (even if you currently only choose to use PayPal). You should be able to switch from one to the other at a moments notice. Here's a fun test! For those of you running several sales pages or websites on PayPal alone, pretend your PayPal account was frozen right at this moment, how many of your sales pages and products and services of yours online would this affect? Another question would be, do you have important income generating accounts on certain sites that only payout what they owe you via paypal? And how long would it take you to switch ALL of your sales pages and related sites that make you money via paypal so that you can accept money again? Would you be scrambling to look for other payment processors and to set up an account with them while you sort out the issue with PayPal (which could take months)? if so, don't wait until it's too late.

The thing about Paypal is that thousands of IMers use it which makes it easy to pay for services and software through our community. Also the main reason people use it is there is no other good alternative. Paypal does everything you could ever really want to do and it does it will. Yes there are some problems with it and people complain about it, but that is going to be with every service. Nothing is perfect.

I would give you the main reason. Yeah, it is convenience. People are lazy and do not want to switch to another service. Most of use started on E-bay many years ago. OK so E-bay had a product called bill point, but they dropped bill point and bought up pay pal, and now force us to use pay pal, as in no checks, money orders, or cash money. This means we are use to pay pal and there is no learning curve.

I have had my Paypal account for over 7 years and never had an issue. If you play by the rules, keep your dispute count low, you should be fine.

I did sell a website for $12,000 and had to wait 7 days to access the funds, but in the end I got my money and the buyer felt secure.

You know why PayPal doesn't like to deal with Internet marketers that push WSO's?
Because they sick of processing refunds! Just think for a second, if you were a middle man in the transaction, how would you like to give your "transaction fee" back?
