An interesting way to build your list

As many of you know, having a list is easily one of the most profitable ways to make money online. Most of you probably give away ebooks or similar incentives to get subscribers, but I recently saw a slightly different technique that I thought was neat and never occurred to me before.

Forum registrations.

When users register for your forum, you can have them register for your list at the same time, and since most forums have users confirm signup link via email anyway, it makes aweber or what you use, easy. If you don't have a forum, or don't want to wait your time/energy trying to grow one, consider buying one off the various site auction sites :p

  • The idea is good but you should ask the members weather they want to receive your mails or not. Many people do not want to have emails which are based on advertising. Build your user approved lists that might help you a lot.

The confirmation e-mail from your autoresponder is a must here (thank you for joining..., we would like to..., please click if you agree/disregard if not). You can't e-mail them just because they registered to one of your forums. They did not register for that.Of course, no pitching admin e-mails every now and then are acceptable. Otherwise you put yourself at risk of losing your audience and being accused of spamming.

Yeah of course they should be made aware that they're signup up for a list and the forum, I definitely wasn't saying trying to pull a fast one on users, i'm just saying it's an effective technique, at least on the forum I saw, because you get a new subscriber and they get access to the forum.

Robert, you got the point! No one likes to receive spamming emails.
There's a proven effective way to build your list anyway.

You are absolutely right, you will always need the consent of your members, otherwise, that'll be treated as spamming. :p

Forum in certain niche is kind of saturated especially the IM or MMO niche! How many successful forum on IM niche you can find other than WarriorForum? You will find a few.

In terms of marketing you'd be surprised, granted most aren't as successful as WF, but some are arguably even more successful, if you go by user/thread count anyway. But that's fine, there's plenty of interesting niches out there, like for instance i'm on aforum that focuses on apple products, and it's absolutely massive(and has no association with apple themselves)

I think you've got a great point here. It is still something new now so those who are practising this might gain early mover advantages. Still, Bonita also raised a good point which brought me to think about whether doing so will dilute your list building purpose.

Anyway, do share with me if you have great result folk!

    Thank you for sharing

Nice idea! have you actually implemented it? I guess conversions would be heavily based on the forum topics and appropriate offers!

Well, if I had a forum I wouldn't do that.. Forum members will not be happy receiving marketing e-mails just because they register on a forum.
You can have a second page when they confirm their sign up and ask if they wish to register on your list.

Nice idea, but I'd definitely recommend a tickbox to opt in to the mailing list at the same time as joining the forum, with confirmation email to follow. It looks dodgy to just send them a confirmation email from your autoresponder otherwise.

It's definitely a method that isn't utilized much, but is far from an ideal way to go about things, at least in my opinion. Just take a look at threads around here related to starting a forum. People can't for the life of them figure out how to get traffic to their sites and get the traffic that does come to participate. I'd imagine the work put in to get a respectful level of subscribers just wouldn't be worth the return in the long run.

nice idea, but to create a forum just to build a list ??
can't get .. because you still need to generate traffic to make people join the forum and has to provide valuable information that they can't find in other forums ..

instead of doing all that .. simply drive traffic to squeeze page or blog

No one said you'd have to limit yourself You can of course integrate ads in posts or what have you just like all major forums do. Not to mention you can sell different special membership levels like WF does, or start a WSO section. There's many things you can do, forums can be extraordinarily profitable, just ask Allen And for you guys concerned about getting traffic to a forum etc...no different than a regular site and as i said you can always buy one that's got traffic coming in. The users of course are the ones generating your content via their posts, so it all works nicely.

I totally agree with rohit36. Even WF does not just send e-mail to it lists like that. I guess people will become suspicious. And you might add up losing most of your list. Which I suppose they are meant to be your friends????....
