What are the steps involved when someone opts in

I a blog for about 2 yrs and up to a couple of months ago have relied on SEO for my traffic. Tired of the google roller coaster and am now focusing on article syndication and list building. My question today is about list building. I have spent the last several weeks putting together a 6 part series that I am going to use for my incentive for readers opt in and want to know what are the steps involved prior to receiving part one of the series.

1) They click on opt in form

2) They check their e mail to confirm

3) Do I send them a thank you and what to expect at this point ? Any suggestions on what should be said here.

4) They receive part 1

This is my first time at this and want to increase my odds of it being successful. Thanks

Have you joined an autoresponder company such as aweber or getresponse?

How technical are you with your blog? Can you paste the code into the site, and what theme are you using?

It's also worth looking at other people's blogs and doing some research to see how they go about the process. It's even worth setting up a throw away account just for this purpose.

    Hey, 2point2.

If you are using an email marketing service like Aweber you are in good hands. I believe they will walk you through the process when you setup your first list. From within your aweber control panel, you can setup when you want your series to be delivered. I would say something like thank you for subscribing, your series will be on the way, if you want it delivered at a later date.

You should be able to have it delivered in one email at a time. You can send the entire series at once as what they receive immediately after opt in or you can spread it out over a few emails. If your using aweber, it is very easy to set all of this up. Good luck to you.

your autoresponder gives you the sign up code and this code will redirect to a thank you page. (the same one you put on your page for people to opin) You need to give the thank you page url to the autoresponder ahead of time (when you make this code) so make your thank you page ahead of time and upload it to your website, or if you use cpanel create the page using the html creator.

Thank you page Says "Thanks for opting in" you'll begin receiving my awesome 6 part series right away.

The autoresponder will allow you to create 6 emails for each delivery of the course. and send them in the amount out days you specify for them to go out, once every 3, 4 days, every day up to you.

How are you delivering the course if email only then paste them in to the slots of your autoresponder for them to go out automatically no work on your part. If they are pdfs or videos then upload them to your webhost and put a link to the files in the email slots.

Your first email should be a welcome email.

Alternately you can put your series on a website and give it to people all at once or do a membership and charge a tiny fee. This would give you Paid subscribers (preferable because if someone buys once they will most likely buy again) hope thAT helps

I suggest that even more important than the autoresponder you choose (I use the services of three different suppliers) is the point I highlighted above. It's essential that right at this point you start to form a relationship with your subscribers.

Talk to them! Exactly what to say depends on your personality, just be yourself. Thanking them and giving them an idea what to expect from you is a good way to get started.

    3) they opt in to confirm and they get a confirmation email with the download link to the freebie you used to get them to sign on to your list

    4) you send out updates with links inside the updates to even more lists which FILTER your "big list" into smaller and smaller lists. These are more targeted and specific to your eventual PAID offer. The trick here is to get them to do SOMETHING or even pay a small token price. The point is to make it HARDER to get on the list-this means only SERIOUS PEOPLE will be on your mini-lists. Keep funneling the lists with harder and harder hurdles until you get a PURE LIST that has a very high chance of buying.

WIDE BASE, finer and finer lists.

With the thank you email I would give them part one of your six part series. Like someone else said, it's important to start establishing a relationship with your new subscriber right away.

You may want to consider turning you 6 part series into an ebook or all in one course if possible. If it were me that is what I would do.

After your 6 part series though it's important to keep emailing them! You need to put together a strategy for contacting your subscribers regularly. Give away good content most of the time and then every so often make a product offer.

I know some people who plan out their offers for a year in advance and some who plan 6 weeks or so at a time. There are many different ways to structure how often you email and how often those emails make an offer. I know some people who make an offer with every email. I know some that do 4-5 emails of content or giving away free stuff before they make an offer. It's up to you and how you think your subscribers will respond. But I would sit down and think about what your strategy is going to be going forward with your list after your 6 part course.

But don't let planning get in the way of taking action! Schedule that course in your autoresponder and put up your opt-in form!

The welcome email is key to a good relationship with new subscribers. You should set the expectations with this email. Tell them what they will get and how often you will send it. I also believe that welcome email can offer a freebie such as a whitepaper or some such just to provide an extra thank you for signing up.

Thanks for comfirming how important the confirmation email is. Knew I needed to do follow up emails after the 6 part series and having a longer range plan sounds like a good Idea.

      JimDucharme...what is white paper?

A white paper is a report. It could be an analysis of a survey or a case study etc. Just google it for examples.
