For me, blog commenting is probably the most underrated way of generating traffic to your website/squeeze page.

Many people use blog commenting for the purpose of getting backlinks to improve Google rankings, but there is so much more to it than that.

Think about it, people who have got as far as the comment section of an article, are readers and they want to learn more. These are the exact kind of people who you want on your list.

Take advantage of the big boy blogs in your niche by leaving a quality comment. I usually write around 2-3 paragraphs by either elaborating on something in the article, or contributing something completely different. This is probably the most important part, don't be spammy. If you don't know much about your niche, then research before placing a comment.

Think of your comment as a pre-sell, a way to warm up your prospects. If your comment is well written and contributes to the article, they are more likely to click your link and opt in to your squeeze page.

I usually end my comment like this..

(Pen Name) ~ www.yourwebsite.com

    I'm surprised a huge blog like the one you mentioned let you put your link into the comment box at all. It just goes to show that they will not delete a quality comment that adds value to the article they just wrote. Great stuff.

    Blog commenting is actually quite difficult because due to spammers blog owners just don't like links unless it's wikipedia or some other huge site. Your comment needs to be really great and even then there's probably a bigger chance that it will get rejected rather than accepted.

    If you comment on the right blogs, and you are one of the first ones to comment, you can definitely get a lot of traffic from your blog commenting.

    I have been blog commenting for years on and off, it does work well.

    Thought I'd chime in a little late with a method that I personally use if I'm doing niche-related commenting only. I do this on a huge scale with Scrapebox (hundreds of keywords at once) but I'll share how to do it on a "one-at-a-time" scale.

    1 - I make sure I've got a large list of popular keywords in my niche. So do this first. You want high traffic keywords.

    2 - I'll plug these keywords into Google and select the "discussions" option. (Can be found by clicking "More" on the left side of the search results page.)

    3 - I'll then select "Past week" results only. Again, this can be found to the left of the search results page. If it's a REALLY high traffic keyword I'll even look at results from just the past 24 hours.

    4 - I'll run a PR and / or Alexa check on the blogs that are showing up in the results. If it's a high PR blog, chances are it's getting a lot of traffic. This isn't ALWAYS the case, but it usually is.

    5 - Finally, I'll do a quick scan of the blog and see if there are other comments. In other words, I want to make sure the blog owner is actively approving comments. If so, I'll go back and comment on the post that matched my search term. (Manually comment - not with Scrapebox.)

    What you're basically doing is using Google to find recent, niche related posts from high traffic blogs. I know it's not rocket science, but a lot of people tend to forget that you can do this.

    Why recent posts? Because these will tend to be at the top of the blog and can drive decent traffic if you're doing it frequently enough. (Since the posts are still new.)

    If you use Scrapebox you can REALLY ramp this up. I do it on a weekly basis and find hundreds of fresh, niche-related posts from high traffic blogs. There are times where you'll get lucky and have one or two comments that bring in a ton of super-targeted traffic for awhile.

      I do a similar thing with CommentLuv - append your keyword with "CommentLuv" and perform a Google search. Go for the high ranking blogs approving comments and write your contribution.

      This only works while the blog entry you have written on your site is at the top of your RSS feed - so target similar postings to your own. It's a way to get qualified traffic.

    I agree with the OP and would add Forums to the mix too. I've not tried to add my link to the bottom of the comment, but that would be cool if it got accepted.

    I know with forums, I get people that contact me for advise or jobs or whatever. In addition, I'm sure they are visiting the site in my sig file or profile page. Unfortunately, I get a lot of spam from it too. Emails that start out "My dearest, I got your name from ****forum and I'd love to meet you. I am a single lady with a decent heart.. bla bla bla.

    Heck... I'd probably respond if I didn't think it was actually a guy trying to scam me. hahahahahah

        Crazy, but it must work or they wouldn't still do it. I guess people are lonely.

        I wanted to add that some of these really good blog comments show up as strong backlinks in MajesticSEO or hrefs... even though you use your name as the only anchor text.

    Inspiring stuff, I've done some blog commenting before but never consistently and still getting some visits now and then from those comments. I should be concentrating more on this side of promotion.

    In addition to the OP's method I would like to add something more. I use Google alert service for blog commenting, usually I set an alert for a few keywords and set the notification instantly. Now whenever some thing comes up relevant to my niche/keyword I get an alert. Then I go to the blog or site and forum to see if there's any scope for me to leave a comment.

    Usually I get to comment first and most of the times the comment gets approved and apparently it gets the first position as well. So I get real targeted and prompt traffic from the comments. But I've never tried to leave a link at the bottom, I should give it a try. But all this was a year ago, somehow I lost the appetite of commenting on blogs. Hmm; I should start doing it again but this time with more consistency.

    Setup Google alerts for relevant keywords. That gives you a heads-up when new content gets indexed. Then you can visit and see if you can get one of those plum top comments.

    I totally agree with the OP. People used to force their keywords in commenting blogs disregarding the fact that moderated blogs does not allow such spamming. Even though you are not using keywords and use your name instead, when you post sensible and useful comments, other commenter will click your name to find out more about you. My previous SEO blog was a successful recipient of my comments in SEObythesea.com.

    Anything that is automatic will give you no result..

      I'll bet those SEObythesea.com backlinks were pretty effective, too. I'm always seeing high PR posts from that site when I'm harvesting & researching with Scrapebox. If I recall, they're DoFollow as well.

      I'd much rather get a backlink from a site like that than 1,000 backlinks from junky / spammed-to-death blogs.

      It doesn't take long to leave legitimate comments on moderated blogs. Yet people still love to press a few buttons, throw junk comments at a few thousand lousy blogs, and hope that their rankings increase.

    I think you are right in saying it is a vastly underrated legitimate technique to gain useful/good traffic. The key is to not be spammy and just write a useful, unique and relevant comment.

    A good add-on technique to this is to subscribe to the 'big boy' blogs RSS feeds in an RSS reader (I use MyYahoo) and monitor the newest posts so that your blog comment is at or near the top of new posts.

    Bottom line: the closer your comment is to the top of all comments on that thread, the greater the likelihood of traffic generation - with a good comment, of course as the OP stated.

      100% agree. Once you get the hang of it, commenting on recent posts from niche related blogs can bring in a LOT of traffic if you're consistent. Some comments will be duds. But others can be winners & give you a few hundred pretty targeted visitors.

      I too agree with your concept. Commenting in 2-3 paragraphs is too old and little weird idea. Today no people have so patience to follow a lengthy type comment. Well, I think the comment should be short, descriptive and eye catchy so that any visitors who goes through the blog can quickly have a short glimpse and follow your link.

    Your dead on with this post. I remember getting flooded with a few hundred people in a hour when I left a good comment on a big time marketers blog. I left one of the first comments and made it very valuable. Blog comments can be a good source for traffic if the blog creator has influence and a huge audience.

    Contributing good content and ADDING to the post itself is a VERY valuable tip as well.

    I'm good at getting comments to stick and can get hundreds of visitors a day to my site through it from just a couple of hours work. It's harder if you're pointing directly to your squeeze page though as if the blog owner checks it they'll see little value in that but link directly to a similar article (or totally opposing article) on your blog and a lot will let it stick if your comment is good.

    3. Mention the article post.
    4. Specifically mention a point they wrote about and offer your opinion on it.
    5. Thank / compliment them on writing a good article.
    6. Say you have a similar article over on your site you think THEY would like and ask them to come over and give you an opinion on it.

    If you talk directly to them and not to the wider audience and be specific to show you've read the post THEN post a link they'll usually approve it. Works for me.

      That's crazy. I always find myself as a reader reading the conversations between the author and readers. It's just more interesting.

    Excellent information. I recently begin dedicating time to blog commenting and I am tracking to see the results of the time I invest in it. In the end it is exposure and any type of exposure sure helps.

    I actually made things super easy when it comes to finding blogs/sites that I can comment on that are related to my niche. I use the power of Google Alerts, I simply put in a bunch of the keywords in my niche for example "Article Writing" and it delivers everything that is published on the Internet with that specific keyword.

    Make sure you put the quotes around to make sure it gets you only sites/blogs with that specific keyword in it. This way I don't have to go looking for sites, they come to me =-D

      Placing a quality comment on a blog is key . Too many have fallen into just doing whats quick and easy by saying great blog or I found your site ....

      They are actually wasting their own time . They'd be lucky to get published and no one will follow their link if they ever are published.

      So you are 100% on the money with this thread . take the time to make a quality comment on a number of blogs and you are sure to get a nice increase in traffic visiting your site , not to mention a backlink . Dont worry if the blog is ' no follow ' . Use it to your advantage

    Interesting people allow urls in comments. I almost always never allow comments with urls to be approved; I mark them into the spam folder from where I delete them. I can almost always tell when someone is doing it for a link. I only allow comments where people do not leave a url. They are always genuine.

      The traffic I get from blog commenting is from the name field. I never place a link in the comment itself.

    idk, time is money but in this case it worked out. I created a blogger account based on a video game niche and read blog posts from about 1000 related bloggers (prominent in the space), giving a great comment / feedback for each one as a test. The result was not much but the site wasn't that functional (too many variables)

    I think if you are just getting started with this idea, leveraging an existing platform such as blogger or wordpress gives you instant access to these top blogs. Only pattern I've seen is they promote their own, i.e. a blogspot blogger is more likely to blogroll and interact with other blogspot bloggers.

    Really like how you leveraged a "backlink" approach into traffic generation though. Very clever, and this technique should be looked at more closely. Maybe you can make a step by step guide in a blog post or video. Thanks

      The point is not to post something random, but rather to post something valuable that people reading the page will appreciate.

      The number of words in your comment is not what makes it valuable. It is the ability of your comment to satisfy a need or desire of the person reading your comment that makes your comment valuable.

My personality is one where I'm naturally friendly and quick to join in the conversation. They will come to your website and some of them will join your list. But the trick is to get them to buy something.

      If you know where they are coming from then you start to have a conversation with then about their problems (in your emails). If they are talking about their problems the next step is doing something or searching for a fix! Notice I didn't use the word solution because I think its overused.

      Based on my experience, there is enough information on the web now where as most marketers usually have the fundamentals down to a science. All they need is the concept of good traffice that fits their personality. I'm big on personality because you're going have to do it everyday so you will need to fall in love with the task.

    I just recently started posting comments on articles I read with a link back to my website. I never really thought blog comments could bring in a lot of traffic but I was wrong. If done correctly a couple comments could bring in a good amount of traffic which may just convert into a sale.

    Make it a habit of posting at least one well thought out comment on a high ranking website per day and watch the traffic to your website increase.

    When I used to run a popular blog (few years back), I would NEVER approve comments with links (either in comment body or name) no matter whether the comment was a quality one or not. Period!

    I mean... why on Earth would I bleed dozens (hundreds!) of *MY* hard-earned visitors navigating away to *YOUR* site?! just because you posted a good comment?! no way! Those people who navigate away will not click on my affiliate banner, or will not read any other of my posts, or will not subscribe to my opt-in box, etc. Why would I trade that for just one quality comment?!

    I swear I don't understand why bloggers would allow links on their comments :confused:

      I absolutely see where you're coming from. But most people don't think this way. (We're all a little jaded in our IM mindset.)

      There are millions of niches and blogs totally unrelated to the IM world. Blogs where people don't care about allowing a few outbound links by approving legitimate, quality comments.

      Or you do all of that, the comment gets approved and then you find the day after they removed the link, even if it was your name :rolleyes:

      Anyways blog commenting is still a good way to build backlinks, and you can get traffic from it and a fluke that brings you in a couple of hundred visitors. If you get a reult every now and then all is good and the removed comments weren't in vain.

    I've gotten 600+ visitors in a day from a one-line comment about my site posted by a fan in just the right time and place. Granted, the comment had implications that piqued the blog traffic's curiosity.

    Given the choice I would choose relevance over optimization any day.

    FWIW that traffic trickled down in about a week. Had I had the foresight to put some kind of opt-in into place - well, live and learn. : )

      I use Scrapebox almost daily to find recent posts from active blogs in the niches that I'm in. A handful of legitimate comments can drive a LOT of very targeted traffic if you happen to be one of the first to comment on a new post, from a high traffic blog.

      There are times where you'll get really lucky and see hundreds of visitors over a few days from a single comment.

          If you're looking for an alternative to using Scrapebox to find recent posts check out Google Alerts. As a few others have said.

          Though with Scrapebox you can search for hundreds (even thousands) of niche related keywords at once, choose "blogs" and "results from 24 hours," and get a ton of results at once. Which you can then run through the blog analyzer to make sure they're open for comments, check the Alexa rankings / PR of the blogs themselves to get an broad idea of how popular they may be, etc.

    Make sure to put effort into your comment. People are not as stupid as some think and will nail you for a poor quality post. And if your name becomes synonymous with junk or spam, no one will read your comments anymore. Then you need to recreate yourself and start over. Real comments = real results.

    I totally agree with you, blog commenting should be used first as a way to get traffic and then secondly as a way to improve SEO.
    I've tested this intensely and if used effectively it can be a goldmine. You need to find blogs in your niche with a big amount of traffic but not so many comments. Even just a one-line comment followed by your link can get you 100 UV per day.

    Yes, this is a massive way to build up great traffic. If a new marketer chose a solid product and promoted their website/blog with just blog comments for a year, they'd build up more traffic than they could ever imagine.

    Each good comment is a little traffic generator and will continue to bring in traffic as long as the blog and the comment stays live. Of course, many want to take what they think is the easy way out and just buy a piece of software for this. Biggest mistake you'll ever may, though. Listen to the OP and provide quality content if you really want to experience the power of blog commenting.

    You can spot the spammers right away. They usually leave a one liner full of mistakes. "Nice post, Charlie"! :confused::confused: I usually comment on the article and try to add some value.     Nice post, and I agree, blog commenting has been great for me as well.

    It's also a great way to connect with people within your niche. If you leave a helpful comment that actually adds value, they will probably remember you and it will open up opportunities to connect with them in the future.

    Definitely more than just a backlink.

    Great Tips!!! It's really worth to all SEO experts to know that the actual benefit of blog commenting is not generating back links but generating traffic to your site.

    Over the last few years blog commenting seems kind of dead technique to improve your SEO ranking, as it provides you with no-follow back links. That's what many SEO experts used to think and therefore they've stopped putting it into practice.

    And it is good to know that still there are people who does this not to increase their back links but to increase the traffic which is the worth of doing SEO. Since the number of traffic is directly proportional to your sales. More traffic is equals to more sales.

    With Google's latest updates branded keywords are more important than in the past anyway. That means leaving a link with just your organization's name is still powerful for SEO, in addition to the referral traffic a well reasoned comment can bring. In the end, the increased exposure you get can well be worth more than a link anyway.

    Great idea, however, I wouldn't sign by your name, because my experience has shown there is a higher chance your comment won't get accepted (if they have an acceptance process) and then the time you took to write the comment was wasted. I just put the website in the place it asks for (it turns your name into a link) and I find while that doesn't get as many UV my comments are hardly ever rejected.

      Blog commenting sure can be effective if you know how to implement it right On a side note, Google Alerts + Blog commenting is deadly. If you don't know what Google Alerts is you basically input a phrase or keyword into it eg 'How to make money online' and when a blog post/forum post/video/news comes out Google Alert notifies you via email. What this does is you get up to date blogs to comment on which then brings you more traffic. Btw, this information should cost money but I'm giving it away free :p

    Hi,

    does blog comment traffic convert with adsense or affiliate sites?
    I think promote an affiliate site will be the right way here. To build a list with this method it will be not fast enough, you need 1 year to build a list with 1000 opt in's (?) So promote affiliate products with good quality content will do it, it does not matter how many pages you have on your website micro,mini,on page, authority, good content+good product will sale.

    But what is a good blog comment? With 200 words or more or something?
    Is a good blog comment you show that you are an expert on this topic/niche?

    Make general blog comments like;
    "I think you have an great idea stick on it"? I think such a comment will not bring you 100 visits a day or will convert it is too general.

    I think most people will not get 100 visits daily from only 1 blog comment with a few sentences,I be sure to get 100 visits every day, you must make blog comments on 4-5 blogs with high PR to get these traffic daily.

    @Inzesta; what is a huge amount of traffic when you make comments a lot on Huff Post? 100 visits a day,more???

    How often you comment on Huff Post a week to get these huge traffic?
