Essential Wordpress plugins

Hey all, I'm looking for advice on which plug-ins I really need to install on my WordPress sites to make full use of anything I can.

I'm a newbie to most plug-ins, I now All in one SEO is important and can help dramatically.

Any other important ones I need?

Thanks.

There is really no definitive set of plugins that can just be used on every site (IMO).

And another thing to keep in mind is you are better off with less plugins than more. Too many plugins can cause conflicts and slow down your site.

The fewer plugins you use, the faster your website will be.

    1. WordPress SEO by Yoast. Much better than All in One SEO plugin.

    2. Akismet for comment spam catching.

    3. W3 Total cache for saving bandwidth costs and making your website faster.

    4. nRelate Related Content plugin because internal links is essential.

But besides these, go on a case by case basis. And tend to go for fewer plugins.

It really depends on what your needs are so the question is really an open ended question. I work with various clients and the plug-ins I wind up choosing for them largely depends on what type of business they are in and what message they are sending.

For the record, from an SEO perspective, Wordpress is pretty optimized out of the box.

    Thanks for that list Ankesh

Yea I'm kinda realising that it may be different for different sites.

What about plug-ins for an Amazon affiliate site then?

Search the forum for warrior "edynas". He makes great plugins for Amazon. I recently bought these two and use them on my sites:

I'm also a pretty big fan of the SEO by Yoast plugin, as well as the W3 total cache plugin. If you're using WordPress for an actual blog, not just a site, then I also really like the WordPress related posts plugin because it helps keep people on your site for longer.

That's another I forgot about, the sitemap one is important for the spiders.

    What is the Analiticator?

A good one to use as well is Comment Redirect. After a person leaves a comment, it redirects them to a thank you page(that you create) where you can build your list or make money somehow.

I deal a lot in affiliate marketing so I use Go Codes a lot to cloak/track/pretty up aff links and find the Go Codes plugin to be rather invaluable.

SEO Pressor, Yoast SEO (much better than all-in-one)

AND...if you are writing blogs you need CBNet Ping Optimizer.

    Hope that helps

Also like to add, with the W3 cache plugin you can also add cloudflare to it. Cloudflare is a free CDN which can speed up your website. My load time for one of my wordpress sites went from 2.4 seconds to 1.1!

In the last 2 weeks, I've received (or read about on this forum) promotions for 37 new plugins or one sort or another.

They're like apps! - Everyone's seems to be coming out with some sort of plugin or another.

Thanks! Just to clarify for other folks...

W3TC offers CloudFlare as an option in the W3TC plugin. You would still need to create a CloudFlare account in order for it to work properly.

Tip: Do NOT turn on Minify options at both CloudFlare and W3TC (choose one minify option or the other).

A lot of great advice here. Quick comments:

      1. Don't install too many (they can cause performance issues & potential conflicts arise from having a lot).
      2. If you're using a a plugin for caching, choose one only (conflicts can arise). Using a CDN is still ok.

    1. Akismet.
    2. WP Super Cache.

Everything else is not essential and sometimes even harmful.

I've used many many plug-ins for wordpress before (some good, some not so good). The list below are my favorite that I use for every site I have.

    1. WP Security - Don't want your site hacked
    2. SEO by YOAST - Easy way to set up SEO and redirects
    3. All In One Favicon
    4. Get Social (A cool social bar that floats on the side)
    5. WP to Twitter - Sends your new posts to twitter
    6. Yet Another Related Post Plugin - At the end of your posts it will show related posts for users to read
    7. Social Media Widget - A social media widget to add to your sidebar

Just a few that I use

      Twitter Tools

Every time I post to my blog then and automatic tweet goes out on my twitter account that says "Looks like he is blogging again (link to article)

      Simple Facebook Connect

Whenever I post to my blog the post is automatically duplicated on my facebook fan page

and, of course, there is All in one SEO

Using plugins for purposes like spam restriction, seo optimization, image posting, formatting content, ad management, customized sidebars can be a good deal of plugins needed in present day.

A large variety of plugins are found in the premium license with small amount & they are of real help for IM businesses.

Good premium themes eliminate the need for a lot of plugins. I like the All in One SEO plugin and have used it but mostly find my that my themes already do the same thing just as well. And like many have said, the fewer plugins the better.

If you're specifically asking about an Amazon site you might want to stay away from any of the link cloaking stuff like Pretty Link, the Amazon affiliate agreement doesn't allow any kind of redirect links.
