Anyone do Voiceover Work? Suggestions

I'm getting into voiceover work as I've been told I have a great radio voice by more than a few people. Looking at different forums and sites and trying to get an idea on where gigs are posted and where can you be found for gigs. Rates seem to go all over the place for individual / youtube / corp gigs as well. If anyone does this as part of their income, please add to the thread. thanks

One of the easiest ways to have people find you for voice overs is to post your gig on fiverr.

That's one way to go... but only if you want to make a fraction of what other voiceover talent makes. Let's see, the going rate for professional voice work is $100 (or more) for every finished minute. At Fiverr, the going rate is, well, um, five dollars.

Try creating a listing at voice123.com or many of the other voiceover marketplaces. Spend some time creating a demo real with many different variations of your voice and service you are promoting. Edit some with background music and some just you. Give them a taste of you in a lot of different situations.

One great way to start is to search meetup.com and find people doing voiceover in your area.

awesome info, appreciate it. Saw voices123 and wasn't sure on the site. Know they push a monthly fee, but if it lands gigs, then its worth it. Fiverr can't find any success there and won't get quality at $5/gig. Thanks all..

If you are just getting into it, Fiverr is a great place to start. You won't want to stay there, but you can build confidence and get an idea of what people are expecting. If you mess up doing a $5 job it isn't like you messed up n opportunity working on a $500 job.

I tried voices.com on their free trial and a month of paid and did about 100 auditions. I had a couple of likes, but none actually came through on an actual job. The frustrating part to me is that more than half never showed completed just "Closed". Made me wonder if anyone ever got the job.

I have found some work over on oDesk, so you might want to try there and the other freelancer sites. I only do it to pick up a few extra dollars here and there, but if you are looking to get serious, you should have your own website with demos.

Before you get started you should know it is a VERY competitive market. Just being told you have a great radio voice also isn't enough. There is a lot more to being a professional voiceover artist that is able to command the big figures and repeat business. You need to know the correct way to pronounce things, how to breath properly so as to minimize distorting, you also need the right equipment to record and deliver those files. A lot of the bigger companies who will pay you the big bucks expect high grade recording quality and files delivered via something called ISDN. There are so many good voiceover artists out there and now with the bunch of them offering their services for next to nothing on fiverr, it makes it even harder.

By all means go for it but just don't expect it to make you a lot of money without a lot of hard work and countless auditions.

To add to Will's comments, it isn't just talent and skill. There's also the tech issues, such as having a good mic, understanding bit rates and audio file formats, as well as having a quiet room.

Speaking of quiet room, I want to make a few simple screen capture videos, but it's too hot without the fans running, and they make a lot of background noise.

Having a quality mic and room to record in is HUGE. Too many people on fiverr may have great voices, but the quality of their recordings is so bad that they are unusable. I only buy from voiceover artists who have websites with demo MP3s before I pay for anything. I want to make sure beforehand I am not going to get something with a lot of echo or distortion.

For fiverr just post a sample video. $5 might seem too little but most talents there charge $5 for 30 sec, so for exposure it is not that bad. I've seen most voice talents have youtube pages. I also suggest odesk, I 've seen a lot of job posts for voice over talents and the rate is quite good. I suggest that you include a link on your youtube channel for your portfolio.

Make a banging reel and send it to video productions companies. There are a lot of companies making image videos and marketing movies for corporate clients, and they pay OK. Cold-call them and ask for permission to send over your EPK.

Of course Fiverr.com is also good for posting gigs, but I doubt anyone professional would be able to pay the bills with $5 here and there...
