Amazon affiliate program - anyone converting with decent sales?

Hi, Everyone~

Does anyone have more information about the Amazon affiliate program? From what I can read on their outline page, it seems to be a poor choice. One thing is that if your customer doesn't purchase from them, but from one of their "third party stores" then they don't pay. When going to their site, I always buy a "new" book that is listed in the third party section - better price.

And here is a post (below) I found on the web about them - doesn't sound very good at all. Their cookie offer looks pretty lame. Does anyone convert with high sales with them? Thanks, Karuna

I just found this post on the web:

Here are some reasons why some people like me thinks that Amazon Affiliate Program is not good as it used to be:

1. Late last year, they dropped the cookie lifetime from 30 days to 1 day.

2. The starting affiliate pay is only 4% (although that can be increased to 6.5% based on how many sales volume you can generate for them).

3. There is no one central affiliate portal where you can promote products for other countries. That is, if you singup for amazon associates US (you will know that when you have an id ending with -20), you won't get any product details from the UK).

What if you were to promote products for the UK market? Well, you would have to signup for amazon associates UK. Not only will you get a different ID, but also different payment structure. And that to me, sounds ridiculous.

Point 1 is probably the main issue for affiliates. Most affiliate programs pay at least 10% with a cookie of 30 days. Many of our earnings in affiliate programs are going to be made from purchases 10 or 30 days down the line after a user has clicked the link. So cookies are an important part keeping track who refered customers to the merchant, so affiliates can be paid for refering.

So, 1 day cookie is totally unacceptable and disgraceful!

Conversion isn't much of a problem with Amazon, but the very low commission rate often makes it hardly worth it unless you're promoting high priced items.

Rebecca - that's my feeling also.

I started a thread yesterday called "Is this a bad affiliate choice?" asking for feedback on an affiliate store I was thinking about joining, and more than a few people told me I should go with Amazon instead.

This is the hard part of the IM game - not being able to have enough quality affiliate programs to choose from. I think it will take another 5 years for more to get on board.

I really want to promote a product that I would buy - that I feel good about putting on my website. So many sellers are just promoting items they can sell a lot of, quality aside, with the right script and gorilla marketing.

I just signed up but don't really care about the commission. I just wanted to have a spot where are members can just buy the books we recomend. And didnt find books on click bank.

I did alright in the lead up to Christmas using the IPK strategy promoting electronics like digital cameras, Blu-ray players so it can definitely be done - but it can be a lot of work for very small commissions

5% commission sucks. Don't do it! Physical products don't convert well either. It's a lose-lose situation.

        YOU are quite right Rebecca

        I make $20,000 a week.

        It's like this...

To make ANY amount of PROFIT, even $100 dollars...

You need to have a SYSTEM (a method).

You MUST learn that system/method - this takes time. Period

Be that info products (Click Bank)

        Be that Amazon...

        You MUST have a system...

Either way you need to LEARN "a system"...

I make (high) 5 figures a month easily with Amazon...

In the last 7 months I have made almost 7 figures with Click Bank...

WHICH OF THESE IS MOST LIKELY TO BE ACHIEVED BY A "NOOB"?

Neither of them! Simple as that.

        It AINT gonna happen.

Which method will "noobs" stand the best chance of making "a go of it"?

The answer to that is very simple and includes both an "A" and a "Z"...

        C.

        IPK.

Oh really? My conversion rate at Amazon is sitting at 10.65%.

I made $800 last week on one item alone.

Why don't you ask Andy Henry if physical products convert well?

Just because YOU can't do it doesn't mean it can't be done.

  • Bottom line is that you have to have good content, targeted traffic and a strong call to action. For me, I use PPC instead of organic traffic (because I am impatient ) and I do quite well.

Having a system IS key and once you have that in place, it really makes things easier and more predictable.

One of the things that I really like to do is mix affiliate product offers to see which ones convert and I've found Amazon and eBay to compliment each other very well.

If you have a hungry buyer, it doesn't really matter how many days the cookie is good for because they are going to purchase right then and there.

    Hope this helps,

    -Brad

I tried something in the spring last year with that program...I bought the domain name " buyflipvideo.com " and I pointed the domain to the flip video page at Amazon. I then searched for adwords in Google that related yet had not been bid much by others and selected them in my account to point to the domain.

For about 3.5 months, I earned over $ 900.00 after paying for my google words which cost me about $ 1,200.00 .

I would have continued however, Google checks the destination of the link and the site ( Amazon ) did not have the domain name in the address thus, they discontinued my being able to do this.

I know it can be done in some way however, I am a non-tech and have no idea how to do this all in order to comply with their terms while pointing to an affiliate link.

I will post a new thread and ask others.....if you know how to market their program, I would say it can be great ! As I recall, they pay 2 or 3 months behind in case of returns.
