How important is your domain?

There are alot of things a "perfect" domain can help you with, but the real value in a domain is what you give it over time.

Example: Who would have ever wanted a name like godaddy.com?

Agreed. But it does help to SEO a targeted domain name.

You might also consider .biz .co .us etc.

Many people suggest a com, net or org domain in that order, but I have seen examples of .info and other low price domains rank very well too.

My advices are:

*Pick a domain that is relevant for your niche (not just a single golden "long tail keyword")

* Make it short and yet relevant (avoid more than one hyphen)

* Think about if you have to tell someone on a phone what your domain name is - would he be able to get it, without you being able to triple spell it for him?

* Would it make sense on a business card (short and catchy)?

* Sometimes it can help to think about a pyramid - the top level is your domain name, and each layer below are sub topics. Would the domain on top be suitable for the layers below?

Something that is a .com

There's rumors that Google is not giving exact match domains the preference that they once had ... I'd go with a brandable domain if you don't like what you picked out.

From SEO prospective domain name is not that important....otherwise people would have not picked brandable domain names like - google, yahoo, bing etc....

But your domain name is important for your website and traffic....and I would suggest you to go with keyword rich domain names rather than brandable....search engines high light (bold) the keywords in the domain name....

Say you searched "design" in google and what google does is - bold the keyword in the search result...see the image below...and this is important because searcher would feel that the website is relevant to his search as the domain name has the keyword....

Try to keep your domain name -

Short
Memorable (easy to remember)
Difficult to misspell
Pronounceable (if you go for a brandable domain name)
Descriptive (keyword rich or keyword in the domain name)
.com extension (if possible because people usually think website means .com)

And if you run out of short and catchy domain ideas you can use online domain name generator or domain name suggestions tools....

Google, Yahoo and Bing don't need to have url's optimized for search engines- they are the search engines! There's no proof for your claim from their url's.

It depends on how you will promote the domain and what it's for.

You can do very well with either a keyword domain or a brand name for a domain... ebay is not a keyword in itself, but it is a strong brand. It is easily said and understood and lends itself to social marketing.

the-longest-domain-filled-with-keywords (.com) can help SEO, but can kill your branding. If SEO is your game, this doesn't matter much since people will be clicking it from a search engine. Same thing if you promote by email.

Also watch for double s's and such... DellsSearch looks good, but dellssearch gets confusing on the eyes, doesn't work well in webinars, etc.

The same applies to words that could be blended multiple ways such as MaxPowersExplores... or was that MaxPowerSexPlores?

There are no hard and fast rules for domain names... it depends on usage, marketing, branding, etc.

Google may give you something extra if your domain name is optimized, but if you do not optimize it, it's OK. Write high-quality content--it is more important.

I've been building a bunch of sites lately with domains that I registered a while ago but never got around to using.

They have nothing to do with the keyword. Some of them have nothing to do with anything at all. Just made up words.

There hasn't been anything noticeable in difficulty of ranking.

madelyndon, I was in the same situation like you, thinking the same, fortunately I kept thinking and have good ideas and they was availables!

But I know It's very hard right now to find good domains availables...have you tried to see if the owner sell it?

I think the domain is important but more important is that you feel confortable with the domain so you feel motivate to create content.

When I first started my blog, I did the same thing -- kept going back and forth. I eventually learned that as long as your domain name is reflective of the niche you're in and is easy enough to remember, the content that you offer your visitors is far more important. After all, that's what's going to keep them coming back. In short, move on to the next step. If you stay stuck on this, you're never going to get anything done.

Its important. Look up the keywords G**le "thinks" are associated with your topic based on your domain. It they don't have it right it will take you much extra work to "train" them into understanding what you are all about.

Honestly, getting .com is a preference because it is easy to remember, but it's not essential. Unless you are selling the website, then you can easily get ranked and remembered with a .biz, .org, .info or .us TLD. But, you want a .com when you are selling because people consider them more valuable, and you will often make more money if you have a good TLD.

Domain name is good to be simple and close to the type of your business ... extension (.com,.net,.org etc) do matter but don't take it too seriously since there are alternative solutions... just make sure you make it visible to SEO with choosing the correct keywords

Thanks everyone. I actually ended up going with an older domain I had purchased. My biggest problem with everything is I obsess about the tiny details and then I don't get much done. I'm FINALLY moving on, although I still find myself driving in the car and thinking hmm maybe this domain is better..frustrating!

A domain name can make your site seems more professional and usually easier to remember. However, the ranking is mostly based on the page's popularity and the content's relevancy to the user's search input.

Choosing a domain for your business sounds really important but if you feel you can bring sales to any domain then not matters a lot but truly saying, Domains play a big role in defining someone's business image in lot cases.

Mostly people go with .com's, dont know why, but you have a large variety which is appealing in nature like that of .co, .tv, .xxx, .asia, .mobi etc...

Domain is important. I would suggest that you find easy to remember, not long, descriptive, niche related .com domain. Sometimes is better to buy quality domain than to register low quality domain.
