Well, it was bound to happen, I've reached my 1,000th post.

So, this is my 1000th post and I’ve heard that I’m expected to share something of value with all of you. Right Joel? I really wasn’t sure what I should write about, as there are so many more experienced Warriors here and everything that I’ve learned I’m sure has been learned and discussed in depth before.

Then I realized there is a topic that I’m passionate about and wish more people would consider. Oh, it’s been mentioned in passing from time to time, and I’ve touched upon it occasionally, but I believe it is something that is invaluable as a marketer and business owner and necessitates more thought on the subject. As a matter of fact, it has the potential to make or break you. Unfortunately, I’ve personally watched it take out a business and its owner; slowly and agonizingly suck the life right out of them in the same way a fatal disease ravishes a body. What on earth am I prattling on about?

Well, in a word, reputation.

Whether we realize it or not, whether we believe it or not, and whether or not we want it to be true, we are continually building up or destroying our reputation in all that we say and do. I can’t understand why some people blow up and have temper tantrums, are continually spouting mean-spirited remarks, have to argue with everything and everyone or strut around sporting bad attitudes like they’re on the runway showing off the newest line of a famous fashion designer.

As a matter of fact, if you show your butt in public offline, you can be arrested for indecent exposure, but the consequences online can be much more devastating.

People will pass you over when looking for a service or product you provide for someone else’s on the chance they may have to deal with you for customer service, or for any questions they may have, just because you couldn’t control your tongue. People would much rather deal with someone who is pleasant, polite, kind and helpful.

We all know fellow warriors names that emanate politeness, helpfulness, value, kindness and find their posts a delight to read. As a matter of fact, quite a few to come to mind as I write this, but I’ll refrain from mentioning names in case I inadvertently forget someone. And we all can think of warriors names whose posts are…well, the opposite, unfortunately.

I think of it as something like this.

You’ve decided to move to a major city to set up your business, a city that is a main hub to the rest of the world, thereby enabling yourself to be able to conduct your business globally. This city is appropriately called WWW, also known as the World Wide Web.

Once there, you know that you need to begin to seek out methods to advertise your business and coupled with the understanding that you need to associate yourself with other international and local business owners to brainstorm ideas, build some relationships and socialize, you diligently search out the biggest and best platform to do so.

As your eyes scan the horizon, they can’t help but be drawn to the tallest skyscraper of the city, the glint of the sun acting as a beacon light drawing you there as it has attracted many pilgrims before you. You think to yourself, the biggest, the best and the highest spot in the city, this high tower surely attracts attention from every nation under the sun. You begin to make your trek toward it and finally arrive.

There, you discover the name of this awe inspiring building for above the entrance, the gateway in, the building’s name is proudly displayed. It reads, The Warrior Forum.

You make your way in, and begin to explore the different convention halls each labeled as a sub-forum. You listen in on conversations and find one’s that interest you. You are ecstatic, for here you are on top of the world and on the pinnacle of eCommerce for the entire city to see. You marvel at the traffic this place receives. You’re in!

You decide to finally partake in some of the discussions and somehow forget about all of the eyes that are upon you. For reasons unknown to me, you start to display some of the traits listed above as reputation destroyers. And what you haven’t realized is that once those things are said, they’re out there in front of millions of eyes to see.

Once you speak them, you can’t take them back, for they’re out there, people have heard them, read them, seen them and your reputation is taking some pretty hard hits. On top of that, people talk and word carries on the wind.

Imagine climbing to the top of the tallest building in a city and once you’re there, taking a knife or a double edged sword, as the tongue can so easily be, then slicing open a down filled pillow. See all of the feathers taken by the wind and being scattered everywhere across the city? Those feathers are your words and no matter how hard you try to go around the city and try to collect them all, you’ll never get them all back, you can’t. You can gather up some sure, but you’ll never be able to collect them all and refill your pillow. Your pillow, the equivalent to your reputation, will never be the same again.

Sure, in business, someone may give you a nasty review or say something negative about you, that’s just the nature of the beast and nothing to worry about. Nobody can please everybody all of the time and well, haters are going to hate.

What I’m talking about are the continuous flows of negativity sent out and patterns of uncomely behavior that some have a habit of operating in. These patterns of behavior are what I’m referring to. I wish more people would think about their reputation more often and take time to consider what type of reputation they are developing. It’s just good business sense, in my opinion anyway.

Well, there it is for what it's worth.

I’ll leave you with this quote to ponder, as I’ve rattled on long enough, lol.

A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.

        Yep, I see it too.

I'm not a saint. Sometimes I like to get involved in an argument (or do we call it a discussion when we're online?), but certainly not all the time.

This forum isn't too bad tbh, but some forums I think people look for something to argue about in every single thread. It turns into an argument forum rather than one where people help each other.

I don't think you need to be a sweetpea to succeed. Some people can build a good reputation on being an idiot.

          LOL fin!

I agree you don't have to be a sweet pea to succeed. Politeness, common courtesy and sweet peas are totally different.

Hmmm, perhaps idiot is in the eye of the beholder?

        Thanks for your thoughtful post.

Perhaps that is why I sometimes feel like "an outsider" in forum communities.

I shoot straight from the hip and call things as I see them, probably with too little regard for how it may make others feel...

Another thing to add to the "improve thyself" list for 2012!

Congratulations on your 1000th post! I always look forward to hear what you have to say, so keep them coming!

    Hi Terra,

A good reputation is vital, and it is always teetering on the edge of being destroyed.

One of the challenges within a community like the WF is that you can ally yourself with somebody else who gets a bad reputation, and that can reflect on you. It would even be possible to get a temporary ban if things got out of hand.

However, the good news is that most Warriors are quite forgiving and it is possible to rebuild a damaged (damaged, not ruined) reputation. It takes humility, effort, and consistency, but it can be done.

    Oh...

    And before I forget...

    Congratulations on your 1,000th post!

      Thanks Michael!

I agree that the warrior forum and it's vast members are forgiving, that's one of the reasons I love it so.

I mean no one is perfect by the farthest stretch of the imagination and anyone can have an occasional off day where they're not in the best of moods, or are experiencing stress or pressure from outside sources. And due to that, state something in less than a stellar way. Lord knows I have.

What I was talking about was a pattern of doing so and admittedly it would take a long stretch of such incidents to do someone in. As I said, I did watch it happen over time to someone I know and it was a sad display.

I'm glad most people do catch on to that unacceptable type of behavior and turn it around. But those aren't the one's were discussing.

Congrats Terra on your 1,000th post, I can't say what i'm reading is a complete shock to me based on our recent chat, but I agreed then and I agree now!

Although you say that it's the nature of the beast in other professions, I feel a bit differently about that as when I worked in a financial advice company, if the adviser put a wrong foot with either the regulator or clients their reputation would be in tatters for the rest of their career and they would be lucky to get it back!

Thus, I am strengthening your point here, it's of such vital importance to maintain professionalism, courtesy and integrity on this forum and outside of it, it should not be underestimated as it clearly is by many.

Everyone, myself included should bookmark this thread and every time someone says something here which ruffles my/anyone's feathers, this should be a reminder of what potential consequences my reply my have for my reputation.

Great 1,000th post Terra, I look forward to many more in the future.

    Kind regards

One of the tricks I use is to type exactly what I feel, to let it all out, and to let 'em have it. But...then I re-read it before hitting the Submit Reply button.

If there is any way for me to soften the wording, but still get the same point across then I do it. There have also been a few times where I posted, but quickly hit the Edit button. Either way, it's the same basic idea that you mention.

Then...there are those posts where I argue, or say something that's not to nice. In those cases I use a warts-and-all approach. In other words, the troublesome post stays, but a response later in the thread may explain the post, or offer an apology. We're all human and make mistakes.

      Tact is a virtue.

I totally agree with Michael, I have found myself in the scenarios you described on a number of occasions and have edited my response once I have looked and seen what it would look like if I would post it.

This is an opportunity we have to edit things before replying or to quickly amend it if we have already posted as no one or very few people may have seen it. Indeed even if they have, saying sorry I got it wrong or I hope I didn't offend you is the right way to go about it, eating humble pie once in a while does no harm for anyone, we're all human after all.

I would point out that we have this opportunity as we are writing and not speaking as we can't then take back what we say and edit it, so if we say the wrong thing or hurt someone's feelings there are consequences which may not have come about if we put some thought in before posting.

        Just a thought to ponder!

I have a tactic I've used on rare occasion, very similar to yours. I also will type exactly what I feel, letting it all out, blowing off steam, I reread it and then back out of the reply box and never post it.

The post was really only for my eyes and just an exercise for me to regain my composure, lol!

As I said, we all have days where we're bothered by the smallest of things and self control comes in handy on those days for me.

That's a great 1000th post, and a point that newbies and the more experienced would both do well to heed.

There are people here that when I see they have posted about something, I will click, because I expect their post to be honest, helpful, well intentioned, often well informed.

There are others who I will not click, because I expect sarcasm at the least - unhelpful, unpleasant, not nice.

You hit the nail on the head when you ask which one I would choose to work with if I had the choice, it's an easy decision, and I love your feathery pillow image, it works wonderfully!

    Cheers,

At one time, not so long ago, reputation and honor were held in such high esteem that a ruined reputation = ruined life. While we don't go to such extremes, its still a really big issue, unfortunately our modern role models seem to mock the idea of reputation/honor and treat such concepts with scorn and cynicism. I agree completely, especially online, where your words, advice, and products (promoted and/or produced) define your online presence as an IM'er. Google slaps aren't the thing we need to pay attention to!!

Oh, congrats on the 1000th post!

Yes, it is a shame that those more simple days where you could rely on one's word and a handshake are long gone.

I had more to say, except I forgot due to laughing at your last line. I love it!

Yes, Google slaps pale in comparison to a slap down of your reputation and business online and as violent as some segments of society have come to be, another kind of popular slap can hurt as well. :p

Well, mine took me awhile because of lot of my posts are in sub-forums where they don't count.

I love the discussion going on here.

What a difference it makes knowing that there are experienced and Senior Warrior Forum members who talk about 'being considerate and sensitive' to the potentially undesirable effect of every words we write, particularly when what we read or what we wanted to say is not in concurrence with an individual or with the majority.

Sometimes, it's important that we remind ourselves that the world does not rotate on us. I won't be dropping names but there ARE people who will argumentatively (perhaps, even physically) fight for what they 'personally' believe is right till kingdom come. Sometimes, I dare myself to create a thread and ask everyone if those who are so courageous to discourteously object somebody else's thoughts have the guts and thick skins to say the same words when the person is physically in front of them.

When you respond diplomatically to these argument-loving Warriors, they tell you that you're taking it personally. But what do they call it when they speak in all sorts of sarcastic slang words and never-ending twitching and rolling eyes? How I wish there's a smiley that pokes somebody else's eye.

Sometimes, I'm thinking of advising those twitching-eye lovers to see an ophthalmologist.

P.S. I don't have personal hatred to anyone who uses the 'roll eyes' smiley. But you guys, who have been in this forum for a while, know who those persons are.

I hope it's okay to call you that, lol.

Anyway, I agree with a lot of what you say in your post, but I'm not sure about the "poke your eye out" smiley. Isn't that sort of being argumentative yourself?

To me, having one of those would only incite more of the arguing and/or fighting that you speak against. Don't you think that perhaps, being the bigger person and walking away would be the better thing to do? Or replying with something polite and kind in an attempt to douse the fire?

      Just saying...

Thank you for the compliment, 360.
        You're welcome, Terra.

I hope it's okay to call you that, lol.
That's alright because we are Help Desk Associates who work per shift.

You are correct, Terra. Sometimes, walking away is a better thing to do. But, sometimes too, no matter how willing you are to walk away, there are instances that you need to stand still and move forward. I guess, it just has something to do with mental toughness on how one could resist those with indifferent behaviors.

But anyway, as a Help Desk Associate, there are better things to do online than stay in an argumentative discussion. In most cases, there's no money in there. lol

Congratulations on your 1,000th post in the Warrior Forum.

Politeness and civility costs nothing - that's what I was taught a long time ago growing up. Treat people as you would have others treat you and you will be fine in every ones eyes.

Go the extra mile to help people and your reputation grows faster than bushfire.

I look forward to your 2,000th. post in due course, as everyone here will do too.

Your 1000th post was great! Congrats! People need to listen to that. I treat people here as I would in public as well as how I would want to be treated.

Most of my offerings are purchased many times over because of good reputation. I am a big believer in building rep.

To add to your post, building rep can be as easy as adding a bonus to your next WSO. Add that bonus and they will keep buying knowing that there is more. They know they will receive a bonus hence driving your sales.

    To your success,

      Very well done, Miss Terra...

As a case study for your point, I was a member of a very large and busy discussion list (like a forum via email) called the Link Exchange Digest (LED) in the late '90s.

Someone archived all of those email digests.

From time to time, I still run across posts I made by email to that list 15 years after the fact...

I got a thanks back and you got it!

        Thanks John!

It's actually quite amazing at all of the "old" things you can find on the Web. It's mind boggling to me sometimes.

Also with the amount of times the serps crawl the WF, I've found quite a few things become indexed at what appears to be instantaneously at times, which is why we really should mind our p's and q's.

Yeah, haha! If you want to start counting, be my guest, lol!

But I'm pretty sure you have better things to do with your time.

    Hi Terra, Congratulations!
Thank you for your great insights... I agree on how reputation should be valued and esteemed. I am in some ways like you... I blurt out want I want to say but ends up deleting everything lol... Words are like dagger, once it hits you, you can take it back by saying sorry but at the end of the day the impact of it to other people is still there. However, I am sure that most people still look at the good sides of others rather than the bad one, if otherwise... well it might take some sincerity, and humility... to get back where you have started but it is surely worth the shot.

You're right in a sense, Michael.

You do tend to find what you look for and what you say is especially true here in this forum. Tons of great trustworthy warriors reside here. Sometimes I have a bad habit of thinking in the once bitten twice shy mode.

As for not giving up hope just yet? Well you know me, I'm a hopeless optimist at heart.

It's good that you want to contribute, but don't force yourself to reach what is an arbitrary number of posts. If you start making 30 posts a day, it could create the wrong impression, no matter how good the posts are.

The secret to reaching 1,000 posts is to be a regular contributor. Make a post or two every day, and you will get there before you know it.
