Why can't you do both?

I would sell it (even if it is just for a small price) and build my list. This will make sure that my subscribers are not just freebie seekers.

I would sell it, doesn't have to be crazy expensive but I would definitely sell it so at least I know I'm getting a buyer on my list.

I suggest you use it as the beginning of your funnel. Sell it as $7 and then lead to a $47 priced product which leads to a $100-$200 priced product which leads to a $500-$1000 product and beyond. Some of the marketers in here can make tens of thousands per person. Now that is a deep funnel. If you have been providing great content for some time its time for you to start selling your own products. With my suggestions above it will mean that you will need to create products of higher value to sell to your list and all of your future subscribers.

If your goal is getting a more effective long term biz model, I would say build your list first then monetize it (I don't mean abuse it of course) assuming that you have not had like hundreds of subs already.
If you sell your product right away it will not last long, it will only last as long as you are still promoting your product and you keep creating new products but if you use your product to build your list you can have a longer term biz model as you can email marketing your list over and over again as long as you are not abuse them and as long as they stay subscribed.
In my opinion even a bunch of freebie seekers will eventually buy something when they come to their senses.

Use it for op-in email list.

Sell it and build a fan base.

Are you a noobie or a guru? If your a noobie give it away to build your business, then along down the yellow brick road after many more of these deals you will be in the elite guru status and people will be more inclined to open their wallets to you.

You can use your e-book to build your list and to sell.

Write a small (teaser) e-book of about 10 to 15 pages. It should be powerful enough that will entice your readers to buy the long e-book. Make them sign-up before they get to see the short e-book.

Building a list will make your plans to be utilized more effectively generating more $$$ & definitely that will remain for very long time & got long term sustainability. So better go with this way & optionally you can opt for selling stuff too...

The second option is nice to try all of your friends.

It depends upon what the rest of your sales funnel in the niche looks like?

If you don't have one yet than you may be better off building the list so you can survey them and find out what they want (so you can create it and add it to your sales funnel).

I would like to suggest you can sell it and then build your list.

Why? If the same thing would happen to me, I would rather sell it. Because that's the only way, I will be able to know that I have the capacity to write something worthy and means a lot of money.

On my opinion, you can do both. You may give some of the important thing that can get the attention of your readers. And to get the full copy of your e-book they would have to purchase it. Just a thought.

I would perhaps base a short report on it on take parts of it and use that to give away to the list.
I would keep the longer substantial ebook and try to sell it to your list or publish it on Kindle.

I think you should also consider this fact: how much traffic are you personally able to generate?

Both methods are valid (giving it away for free to build your list or selling it), but in the end it all comes down to how many people will see your offer.

And this is something that only you can know obviously.

If you're able to generate a large number of visitors on your own, then I would advice you to give it away for free. If it's a quality ebook, then your list will appreciate it and your subs will be more inclined to open your emails in the future.

If you go with this option, one thing you could test is this: have a membership setup. Nothing complicated, nothing expensive (you can even use free scripts), but doing it this way (versus having a simple download page) will increase the number of genuine email addresses.

Also, in this way, you'll be able to promote your upsells more efficiently.

On the other hand, if you're not able to drive a significant amount of traffic yourself, then your best option is to sell it as a cheap front end product and give 100% commissions to your affiliates since they're the ones who will be bringing in the traffic.

In this case (the affiliates route), it's a must to have an upsell in place. Think about it, put yourself into your affiliates' shoes: if you have the option of promotion two products, both having the same degree of quality and both offering 100%commissions, but one of these two products also has an upsell in place, thus earning you more money, which one will you promote?

It all depends what niche it is in and how much value there is. I have found that free products are not meant to the big show only some advice that works as a way of introducing yourself to people.

So I might consider giving away a small taste and offer a link at the bottom to buy. Also give it away in one of your marketing efforts and sell it in the other. This makes your product have value and interest when giving it away free. Not to mention you could get some highly coveted testimonials out of it.

Giving away or selling your ebook also depends on what niche your ebook is in.

If you are writing in a niche where there are not much existing backend products for you to market, then you might as well sell it.

But if you are writing in a niche where you can easily find related affliate products to market at the backend, then you can choose to give it away to build a bigger list or to sell it at a real low price to build a buyer list.

You just have to think it through.

I would say it depends on the backend potential of the niche. If the backend potential is big I would give it away and build the largest list I can and then sell them high ticket products and make more profit than selling an eBook for 99 cents.

I guess you didn't hear about the kindle scams. Where folks are taking authors books and selling them with plr and the folks who purchased the rights get caught holding the bag.

I would use it to build some list's if those are the only two options.

Sell it via Kindle, Tradebit, Payloadz, and your own website.

I would give it away in return for building my list. In fact this is what I am doing right now with some of my offers.
