What Would You Do...Give it Away or Sell it? Hmmmm

Suppose you created a decent sized e-book in a good niche.

You know it is a great value to the readers and it provides tons of quality info on the subject.

What would you do?

A: Give it away free to build your list

B: Sell it via Kindle or another similar platform

I've heard good points from both of these options, however I'm still undecided on which path I would take.

What are your thoughts?

I am curious of which option out of the two would be a more effective long term biz model.

Of course you can sell and make your list from the buyers. But it seems like you could build a much larger list, for future affiliate products by giving it away for free.

On the other hand, I see many marketers primarily selling on Kindle or Clickbank.

Maybe they already have a big list at the point of selling?

      Exactly.

While it's great to give things away for free, you'll find that if you're mostly unknown in your niche the only people that will download your product are freebie seekers.

The similar, but improved version of giving your product away for free, is to have it promoted by affiliates. Giving affiliates 100% commissions.

You still won't make any money on the product, but there are a few advantages to this option...

      1. You create a list of buyers... not freebie seekers.
      2. You start to develop a relationship with affiliates in your niche.
      3. You will reach a much larger audience.

      Good luck!

This is non-sense. There's no such a thing as freebie seeker. How are you to determine who is a freebie seeker and who is a potential buyer in advance? ANYONE in any niche is potential a buyer if you present the right offer to him/her, either of your own product or someone else's product (affiliate offer).

I am leaning towards this model as to shoot for a more targeted and committed list, instead of building a blown out lurker list.

I suggest you use it as the beginning of your funnel. Sell it as $7 and then lead to a $47 priced product which leads to a $100-$200 priced product which leads to a $500-$1000 product and beyond. Some of the marketers in here can make tens of thousands per person. Now that is a deep funnel. If you have been providing great content for some time its time for you to start selling your own products. With my suggestions above it will mean that you will need to create products of higher value to sell to your list and all of your future subscribers.

If your goal is getting a more effective long term biz model, I would say build your list first then monetize it (I don't mean abuse it of course) assuming that you have not had like hundreds of subs already.
If you sell your product right away it will not last long, it will only last as long as you are still promoting your product and you keep creating new products but if you use your product to build your list you can have a longer term biz model as you can email marketing your list over and over again as long as you are not abuse them and as long as they stay subscribed.
In my opinion even a bunch of freebie seekers will eventually buy something when they come to their senses.

Why would you assume that buyers via Kindle/Nook would automatically end up on your list?

My thought is "both", with a twist.

      > For the garden variety opt-in page, what better way to establish value for your incentive than to point to actual cash buyers, on a platform you don't control? It's no longer a "freebie" - it's a valuable product other people have bought.

      > For the folks who buy on Kindle, have a special offer worth more than the Kindle price as a free bonus only available to bona fide buyers. You can use a word or phrase from the book as a password where they can collect the bonus.

      > I'm sure some of you are clever enough to think "why can't I also use the bonus offer as an OTO for the list members who get the ebook for free?"

You can. The Kindle buyers get something with a bona fide value for free, by virtue of being wise enough to buy your ebook.

It's the best of both worlds - kind of like having Amazon and B&N as your affiliates...

You can use your e-book to build your list and to sell.

Write a small (teaser) e-book of about 10 to 15 pages. It should be powerful enough that will entice your readers to buy the long e-book. Make them sign-up before they get to see the short e-book.

Building a list will make your plans to be utilized more effectively generating more $$$ & definitely that will remain for very long time & got long term sustainability. So better go with this way & optionally you can opt for selling stuff too...

I've seen time and time again where people give away the first chapter (or few chapters) in order to build their list. At the end, they give their pitch for purchasing the book.

That said, JohnMcCabe gave you a great answer above.

      Hey Mike!

The question is... where are you in the IM spectrum?

If you are a Newbie...your total focus must be building your list...so give it away! In addition, if it contains good relevant content, then imagine the impact it will have on your prospects when they read it. This will build a good reputation because you simply gave it away.

If you are a seasoned marketer...You can use it to earn the dough....however there are times when I would give it away free:
      • If you are doing a launch, I would use it as the spratt to catch the mackerel (that's a UK phrase...sorry!)
      • Special thank you for your subscribers.
      • When part of a membership site
      • Numerous others...when you want to create some spark!

      Hope that helps?

It depends upon what the rest of your sales funnel in the niche looks like?

If you don't have one yet than you may be better off building the list so you can survey them and find out what they want (so you can create it and add it to your sales funnel).

I think you should also consider this fact: how much traffic are you personally able to generate?

Both methods are valid (giving it away for free to build your list or selling it), but in the end it all comes down to how many people will see your offer.

And this is something that only you can know obviously.

If you're able to generate a large number of visitors on your own, then I would advice you to give it away for free. If it's a quality ebook, then your list will appreciate it and your subs will be more inclined to open your emails in the future.

If you go with this option, one thing you could test is this: have a membership setup. Nothing complicated, nothing expensive (you can even use free scripts), but doing it this way (versus having a simple download page) will increase the number of genuine email addresses.

Also, in this way, you'll be able to promote your upsells more efficiently.

On the other hand, if you're not able to drive a significant amount of traffic yourself, then your best option is to sell it as a cheap front end product and give 100% commissions to your affiliates since they're the ones who will be bringing in the traffic.

In this case (the affiliates route), it's a must to have an upsell in place. Think about it, put yourself into your affiliates' shoes: if you have the option of promotion two products, both having the same degree of quality and both offering 100%commissions, but one of these two products also has an upsell in place, thus earning you more money, which one will you promote?

    Good luck.
    Mike

It all depends what niche it is in and how much value there is. I have found that free products are not meant to the big show only some advice that works as a way of introducing yourself to people.

So I might consider giving away a small taste and offer a link at the bottom to buy. Also give it away in one of your marketing efforts and sell it in the other. This makes your product have value and interest when giving it away free. Not to mention you could get some highly coveted testimonials out of it.

Giving away or selling your ebook also depends on what niche your ebook is in.

If you are writing in a niche where there are not much existing backend products for you to market, then you might as well sell it.

But if you are writing in a niche where you can easily find related affliate products to market at the backend, then you can choose to give it away to build a bigger list or to sell it at a real low price to build a buyer list.

You just have to think it through.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[6733582].message }}
  • Profile picture of the author JayParker
I would say it depends on the backend potential of the niche. If the backend potential is big I would give it away and build the largest list I can and then sell them high ticket products and make more profit than selling an eBook for 99 cents.
