Convert MOV file to AVI

I have volunteered to videotape some videos for a friend using my new Canon camera. This friend then needs the videos uploaded to YouTube. Unfortunately, the camera video is in the MOV format, and MOV takes a very long time to upload to YouTube. If possible, I would like to convert the MOV to AVI, as I've found that AVI uploads so much more quickly. Does anyone have any experience with this, and what can you recommend? Thanks in advance!

    Hi,

You didn't say what your operating system is...
One cross-platform option would be to use Avidemux: Avidemux - Main Page

    i use Freemake:

Free Video Converter| MP4 FLV 3GP AVI MKV DVD| FREE Download

it's free and the dashboard is really user friendly. there's also an audio converter on that site if you need it, but this should take care of it. caters to almost all types of file extensions as well.

AVI files are uncompressed, meaning that if you convert to that format, you are likely going to increase the file size a LOT. So when you say that you can upload an AVI faster than a MOV, that doesn't make sense (because MOV file sizes are normally MUCH smaller than AVI file sizes).

If you want the quickest upload speeds possible (while maintaining good video quality), then I would recommend converting to FLV format. OR... use the MOV format but with h.264 encoding.

Regardless of which format you want to convert to, Super can do pretty much anything you need. FYI... getting to the actual download link on that site is a bit ridiculous, but it's a great program... probably the best free video converter out there.

Actually, AVI isn't a format as such, it's a container file for all sorts of video and audio formats. These include both uncompressed types such as WMV and compressed varieties like MPEG2. As you correctly say, a simple one-step conversion won't guarantee you'll get a video file that is smaller and uploads faster.

I completely agree about using FLV, and the Free Video Converter mentioned earlier is good general-purpose software suitable for the task. I've used it many times for video format conversion and it works very well.

      Wrong.
AVI is only a container. It can contain videos compressed with a variety of codecs...

If you know your way with command line utilities, nothing can beat ffmpeg. It's small, supports helluva lot of codecs natively, and even has GUI shell for windows.

There' s already lots of suggestions in here for free alternatives, so I won't be adding to those. Personally I've been using Camtasia for years and it works extremely well.

One thing to look out for is the quality of the vids AFTER you've converted them. Some of these free online converters will negatively impact the quality of your compilations, so make sure to check them out before uploading them.

Okay, thanks for all the responses. That helps alot. I don't know why my experience has been that MOV uploads slower to Youtube, but I've always found that AVI uploads way more quickly. For example, my 60-second MOV took about one hour to upload. To compare, I took the same video, screencasted it, and uploaded it in as an AVI, and it took only 6 minutes. I don't claim to understand this technical stuff all the time. I also drive a car, but I don't understand how most of it works either.

I have also used FLV for YouTube so I'll try some of the free options listed above and convert to FLV. Thanks again, everyone!

MOV is also a container, and could contain a lot of things.
If you have a high definition video (whatever its container!) it will always take a lot more time to upload and convert (because YouTube makes a conversion on-the-fly) than a standard or low-res one. So - this is just a guess - if the two videos were not of the same quality, there would obviously be a huge difference in the time required to upload them. The speed of your Internet connection has its importance in this, as (roughly), the higher the quality, the bigger the file. And then after that, YouTube will convert your video in different versions. With a 1080p (HD) video it will generate the 720p, 400p and 360p versions, while if you upload a 360p video, it obviously will have less work to do...

In order to upload videos to YouTube or other video-sharing sites, I suggest you convert mov to flv or f4v, both of them are in small size but with high quality. And they are also popular format for online videos. To do the conversion, you may need to use Video Converter software.

You are right. MOV file size is too big while the AVI file size is small. I think the AVI files quality also good. so you can convert the file easily by using a free apps. There are many free apps. I had used many converters. you can use the "Any video converter" or "Xilisoft Video Converter". You can use any one of them. They are working good. both of the apps at free of cost. Thanks
