Kindle: 1st book ever, 1st day, 5 sold!

I finally dipped my fingers into kindle publishing and yesterday, I uploaded one of my older ebooks (sold at WSO a year ago). This is the very first time that I posted something on kindle and I was excited. I did some simple updates and editing and posted it yesterday morning around 6 AM ETD. The book is 31-page doc and I don't know how many pages it will be on kindle since I don't own one. I did not made any promotion other than having a short review on my blog with a link pointing to it's amazon product page. At 7AM today, I checked and I am surprised having 5 sales. I priced it for $3.99.

Do you have the same experience? What is your experience on your first day of kindle?

Wow congratulations, way to go for your first day in Kindle publishing. I know others who have made similar achievement, and I know that what made them those sales is great content and promotion. With you accomplishing this with just a simple review means your ebook is of worthwhile content. Keep us posted on how sales goes for the type of promotion you are currently doing.

I am on the process of finishing the first book of 3 (my first fiction romance novel), and this will serve as my benchmark since I also plan to e-publish this novel.... Yes, it's way to go and I hope to have a desirable result within a month.

Great results, i've been toying with doing Kindle for a while and I thought the length of the books needed to be longer. I can definitely manage a 31 page word document.

Actually, I find that Kindle books that are not too long are better as it becomes a challenge to navigate long books. I find my cookbooks that have about 30 recipes are just about right. Mind you, they have a Table of Contents so at least that helps. With a non-fiction book that is quite long, however, the TOC sometimes doesn't do the best job. Just MHO.

    Congrats Adie!

I published my first Kindle book back in March. Don't have the first day sales like you did, but I didn't expect it to.

I didn't promote it much since it was just an experiment and I wrote it for experience. It's been 4 months now and I've sold less than 50 copies. It's an evergreen topic so I don't mind letting it sit there while I build my audience.

I guess your results show that having a platform with existing audience is key when promoting/selling any type of product.

    Keep up the great work!

    Yes Jeanne

This is actually not for money but to see the result. I remember someone mentioned in another thread that he has around 100 books in kindle and I am wondering what figure he is getting a month . Of course no one would tell but that's exciting....

Hmm, I been thinking about doing that for a while. I read how to set up a Kindle ebook in MS Word. But still not sure how to do it. Glad that you were able to sell your ebook.

The only reason I haven't tried to sell a Kindle is because I figured it would just be a waste of time! You have to compete with everyone on there, and since I don't know much about it, I figured that I wouldn't even come up in the search results.

Success with Kindle varies from person to person, but it sounds like you're off to a great start. I think the niche makes a huge difference. I'm in the midst of finishing up my first book. Can't wait to get it published.

Did you use the Select program?

Congratulations! As I heard the "make money online" topic is not so popular among the Kindle owners. But anyway it is a good start.

Have you created the cover of the ebook yourself or outsourced it?

It has a very simple design and I created it in paint..

I heard that too but I tried.. It's free anyway and didn't took much of my time setting-up an account and uploading those stuffs...

    Congratulations!

My first ever Kindle book was before they came out with the KDP Select program. It sold about 10 copies the first day (October 2010) but still now sells about 50 copies per month.

Without a doubt one of the worst books I've ever written, but we all start somewhere :p

Congrats! Sounds like you are off to a great start! I have published a couple of Kindle ebooks that sold 5 - 8 copies the first day on Amazon...they now sell around 100 copies per month. Sounds like you have found an niche that works for you. Keep going and try to develop other topics related to this same niche and cross promote the ebooks.

I am also racing towards the finish line on my first Kindle book. I expect to have it finished and on the market before Monday

I'm hoping for sales, but not necessarily counting on any...like many people who first publish on Kindle, I'm just trying it out to get a feel for how it all works.

I'm curious to know if anyone has coupled their Kindle books with paperback options offered through Amazon's partner, CreateSpace, and how well they have done with that. Anybody?

      Thanks,

      Shyley

Good job. Keep at it though. If you consider a subscription model - where you focus on turning a few readers into monthly content buyers (ex. in the back of your ebook you invite them to your "kindle club" where they pay $4.95-$9.95/mo for more content) - that can quickly add up

This is the key to long term wealth when using Azon as a distribution channel - that you control!

Just save it in MSword and upload directly. No rejected submission so far. And I also create my own covers.... without using any photo editing software so the production cost is too small... For the 3 ebooks that I outsourced, I paid maximum of $50 for each 3500 words short erotica stories. I paid $25 for the weight loss ebook having around 3000 words.

I think it is around 80 pages in kindle. I don't own a kindle device so I can't really check. It has tables so it has more pages in word document (around 23)..
There is really no specific tips in publishing. Just save is in MSword with Courier New font 12pt, and then upload to kindle. There are some check WSO about publishing kindle and they offer more details... useful details....

It's the book in my sig. I did not hire someone to make a cover so it has a crappy cover design... but it sells..

I haven't tried kindle publishing yet, but your post has motivated me to do so

Hey Adie, well done with the success you're having.
I'm in the middle of writing my first kindle book too. I want to have a good launch so that it motivates me to do more. What would you say is the most important thing to do in your opinion to get good results, are you using any traffic methods at all and did you read any wso's prior?

Adie (and everyone else), how long do your books sit "In review" on Amazon, when you first publish them?

        Thanks Shyley...

bah... their copyright crawler (or whatever it is) found some of the content on my blog and "blocked" my book until I prove it's mine. I was wondering what's taking them so long... And they answer to emails "during regular business hours, monday through friday".

        Oh well. Entering waiting mode

Your welcome. Sorry to hear that you are having issues getting through the review process. I guess I should count myself lucky that mine went through without a hitch. Hopefully, they will get it all sorted out quickly for you...but that definitely teaches us all something - if you are going to use content in your Kindle book that is already published elsewhere by you, be prepared to prove that the content is yours!

I'm definitely filing that information away in my head for future use

Yes LOL especially if you hit Publish during the Thu-Fri night at 1 AM ... by the time they "review" it it's Friday EOD and you need to wait until Monday.

It will get approved I'm sure it's just that I'm not that patient... hopefully by the end of next week it will be up. In the meantime I might just publish another one. He he...

I submitted my eBook there about an hour ago, and is already in status "publishing", passed review and it should be available for purchase in about 12 hours. That is my first eBook there.

I ordered the sample of the book in your signature, but it doesn't show correctly on my Kindle touch. Part of the tables are chopped off on the one side. I'm not sure if the problem is with my Kindle or with the formatting of your eBook. You may want to check it on a Kindle device or ask someone else to look.

A lot of people get a sample first. You may lose sales if it's not displaying right.

I've never published an ebook on Amazon myself, however I have had much interest in doing so in the future. Due to the competition on Amazon, particularly for work at home/internet marketing books, it's much harder to sell books for a high price on there. I have heard though of IM'ers who made a TON of long term income from selling ebooks at dirt low prices of 99 cents or lower.

These publishers have found that while they won't make too much money from the initials sales of their ebooks even if they sold a high quantity, the real money was found by the affiliate links they put within the ebook. They made even more money by giving the buyers the rights to "resell or redistribute" the books, adding in a viral component to it.

Affiliate links inside ebooks are prohibited by Amazon... Your account will get banned if you are discovered doing so...
Some people selling hundreds of ebooks and earning $1 per sale, I don't think it's a small amount if they are making like 80 to 100 sales per day...

I've been thinking of writing a book for Kindle off and on, but I keep putting it off, partially because I'm not sure if I have enough info on the subject for a whole book. It has to do with a certain skill I discovered I had when I was a kid.

Anyways, I think I remember finding out that you need to format it with special software which is freely downloadable from Amazon.com, otherwise the book won't look right when you view it in Kindle.

I'm thinking the books would also need to really be in a high demand category to sell.

You don't need special software to format the book. However, there is a free previewer that you can download to see how your book will look in different Kindle devices. You can write and format the book using MS Word or Open Office.

That is awesome. I don't know if you promoted the book at all, but to get 5 sales the first day is great. And I like the fact that you didn't choose the $1.99 price point. It was minimal effort and hopefully you'll make sales for years to come.

I did promoted it in some forums but not that much. My other 2 ebooks all in weightloss niche were never promoted and all doing well so far...

Is this the One Hour Character and One Hour Plot books? I'm always looking for good writing books to read. Gotta stay sharp.

You should definitely include a call to action for all your readers to sign up your newsletter...or if you aren't good with e-mail marketing, simply let them like your facebook fanpage. It's good, if not better... :-) Goes viral...someone likes your status where you promote your book - his/her friends see what he likes...etc. You get the catch...

Amazon does not display or give to you buyers emails. Amazon just tells you how many sales you've had.

Building list through Amazon is not possible as Amazon does not show any customer contact details and there is no way to crack that.
