I need help with pages and category's for my site.

It's a review site and I will be reviewing a good number of products in a niche which will be updated for the foreseeable future.

Does using category's for each type of product or brand of product affect search engine ranking, compared to using a page for each product brand or type.

Pages I understand should only be used for about, privacy policy, contact and so on.

I hope this makes sense.
Thanks.

Im going to guess your using wordpress. If your doing reviews and thats it on your blog then there really is no reason for categories. Unless your going to blog more then just reviews then I would recommend creating categories. But for now I would say create one called reviews and then make sure you SEO the page (wordpress title for the url) Example blogname.com/reviews/productname-review

I will be adding products frequently as i do reviews on them, so I'm thinking category's will be essential.

A page menu will only return pages. A category menu will (if the theme is set up right) return a mini-blog listing just the posts in that category or just excerpts of them.Of course you can make a custom combo menu with both but that can be a pain to maintain with larger sites.

yes, in a wordpress blog you can have about me, contact, privacy policy, disclaimer etc page and a landing/home page,
then everything else will be Posts and will go in the Category section on the right side in the Widgets area
check this site Outdoor Electric Grill
