Fiverr vs. Going out on my own

Hey guys,

I've been very successful on Fiverr and it's a continuous stream of decent income. However, I know I could be making more outside of Fiverr with my talent and want to go "out on my own" but I'm not sure where to start.

I do professional spokesperson videos on Fiverr. You can see my work at the link in my address. Rather than asking "what should I do" let me tell you what I've done thus far and then I'm hoping you can provide some guidance/steer me in the right direction.

1. I started a website to promote myself outside of Fiverr (Web Site Video Presenter - Presentation and Spokesperson Videos starting at $10). It went live in its current form about 2-3 weeks ago (The girl on the front page is not me..lol...but she has agreed to be one of my spokesmodels). Since the site has not been promoted at all it hardly gets any traffic (obviously).

2. I haven't looked into organic traffic (yet), so I looked at paid traffic. My keywords seem to be HIGHLY competitive and expensive. At this time I don't have a lot of dispensable cash to spend on adwords. In case you're asking "what are you doing with all the Fiverr cash"...paying off credits cards!

3. Craigslist ads. I tried my hand at posting a few ads locally on craigslist. I got one email from someone starting a Fiverr clone..go figure. So not much luck there.

That's really it. So you could say all I've really done is start a website, pricing, etc.

I need a strategy and not just randomly trying sh$t to see what works.

I thought about writing articles for this niche (you'll see a Blog area on the site). I thought about doing a series of YouTube videos that are instructional and informative in this niche also.

I guess I'm just "stuck" as to how to generate sales. I think there is a need for inexpensive yet high quality video spokesperson services. Other sites are $49 for 15 words (I'm charging $30 for 30 seconds which is about 90 words). It's more expensive than Fiverr but much less than the pro sites.

Thanks for reading. I look forward to your advice.

Ron

    Hi Ron,

I also use Fiverr to pad my income as a writer because the site has a lot of buyers on it. I too have my own website where I generate sales. I have been trying to use the power of Fiverr to bring in clients to my website so I do believe the two can go hand in hand it is just a matter of doing it without violating Fiverr TOS.

My experience with Craigslist has been similar to what you have seen. I have been able to pull in one successful client using an ad on CL but do not really feel that is a viable alternative.

Organic traffic is probably your best method I would think. What have you tried so far?

Thanks Laura...so how do you do it without violating Fiverr's TOS? The last thing I want is to have that nice revenue stream evaporate. Thanks.

So how DO you get people to your website without violating Fiverr's TOS? They seem pretty strict...

I'd wanted to say this but had gone to dinner (evening in India now), and when I came back and refreshed this thread just to get updated whether someone's posted something I saw this. Agree - good suggestion.

Jeff's advice might be your best solution for the moment, you need to be proactive in your marketing efforts and since this forum gets thousands of buyer eyes on a daily basis... well, you get my point.

After you start making some cash (besides what Fiverr generates for you) you can try advertising with Bing instead of Adwords and also try some banner advertising (the key here is to strike a deal with the sites owners to let you test the traffic for a few days and see how it actually converts).

      Good luck to you Ron.

Most likely just a promotional email from someone who's course was closing down, Fiverr closing down was just one of those email titles meant to make you click on it.

Best response yet, so start with that, then after you get enough clients there move to another platform, all the while working your online business.

I use alot of voice overs on fiverr. I wonder if I ever used you. I may now have two projects coming up and I suck on camera lol.

Here are a couple of ideas:

1.) Tell your current/previous Fiverr clients that you are going out on your own, and ask if they have anymore needs because you will soon no longer be available through Fiverr.

If they are inquisitive and want to continue getting services from you, they will ask how to contact you without you needing to mention it. I found it works even better if your username on Fiverr is the same as your company name. Then you could tell them "Google my username for more info." It may even help to briefly mention you will be leaving soon, on your gig description, when you decide it's time to go.

Once you get some momentum going outside of Fiverr, it may be best to "suspend" your gig so that you can maintain higher fees without clients choosing to go to Fiverr to hire you instead.

2.) Microsoft Adcenter. I use it and although the traffic isn't doesn't have as much "quality" as Adwords (although their quality is arguable these days) you will get exposure and at least some sales, if not many. The pricing is very reasonable and the exposure is good.

There's no big secret to promoting a product or service. The problem is, it takes commitment and work so most don't want to do it or worse, they take popular shortcuts that undermine the strategy and end up sabotaging all of their efforts. I'm talking about backlink spamming, buying likes and followers and all the other nonsense BS some people here seem to be so in love with.

The strategy in a nutshell is to create a blog and build a massive community around it by diligently adding great content and lots of value for your visitors. Get it hooked to Facebook and Twitter and other popular social networking platforms to start. Then start getting guest bloggers, videos and syndicated articles. And don't put too much focus on trying to impress the SEs. If you're doing it right you'll be impressing your customers and they'll be telling others. Good luck.

Hey your good, I see no problem with you making it on the outside but I would start here first.

Look to the top clones to list your job. You can charge more than $5 and the top ones get a lot of traffic and sales. The top 4 are Gigbucks, SeoClerks, MyCheapJobs and Zeerk

I have sold thousands of gigs on fiverr and I use fiverr to shuffle them to another site

I think starting your own website is a great idea. You can charge more for your services. If you're a beginner to marketing online, the only "semi-hard" thing for you to do is to get traffic and convert this traffic into customers. But even this can be alleviated simply and easily.

Contact businesses such as advertising agencies, video marketing companies etc. and offer them your services. If they are interested, send them to your site for samples.
