Halloween is coming and the............ lol.

No seriously - I'm looking around the net at certain costumes, most of the results are around 9million total pages. Most of these sites are the sites selling the products and most offer affiliate programs.

What I need to know is would I be able to outrank these sites that are actually selling the products.

For instance as an example "aligator halloween costume" has good monthly searches, it has 6 million search results and most of the sites on page one of Google are selling the product.

What is a successful strategy to outrank these sites.
What will enable me to do so?

Thanks in advance.
Aaron.

      Aaron,

Tiffany Dow is currently running a Halloween WSO. Just use the forum's search function and type in Halloween for the keyword.

I forgot to mention, this site isn't going to concentrate on just one product, I'm going to focus on products that aren't that competitive. With a wide range of products that means more content. But again you only write so much about a single costume.

What do you mean invest some money on a decent site? You can build a decent site with WordPress.

I understand what you saying, but that's not true in fact. It's 10 weeks until panic buy for Halloween. You can rank a site in 2 months if you do the work and do it properly.

I know people that have ranked there site in a month lately.

Let me tell you one thing I learned about any holiday. My parents got big into buying and selling things for the holidays, and there is one item you can consistently profit from. Inflatable figures. Buy them right after Halloween for like $5 and sell them for $20-$50 each next Halloween.

No SEO needed. eBay will be your friend, and it's worked for me and my parents for years.

I would suggest writing 2 or 3 articles around the "aligator halloween costume" and use a good seo plug-in to really optimize the page for that keyword.

With it being so close to halloween you may have trouble ranking for certain keywords. Try picking out the most searched costume online and creating a site around it. Narrows your niche, but gives you more of an opportunity to make money.

Halloween is big business AND it does come around every year

I think you're on the right track already, your best bet is to build sites around a specific costume and do your KW research for it. Most of the sites are SEOd for general stuff and the specific costumes rank because of the juice of the site but could probably be surpassed easily, as opposed to trying to rank a general "halloween costume" site and then put up a bunch of stuff.

Dive in, pick your products and do the KW research and go about your onsite and offsite SEO as you would with any other site is my recommendation. You still have a good bit of time to rank it so no need to try to rank pages on web 2.0s or social media and direct traffic, you should have plenty of time to rank a new site itself.

I have many Squidoo accounts for Halloween lenses and I have many domains. They're easy to rank and i Am NOT an SEO person.

I have category stuff, like infant halloween costumes, and I promote specific costumes, like infant lobster costume or whatever.

Long tail is where it's at. If you want to target any big categories you are going to meet stiff, and I mean STIFF competition.

For example if you wanted to rank for a term like Halloween Costumes you not only have a huge fight ahead of you, but it's not a keyword you'll be able to rank with "cheap" links.

Target specific long-tail categories with your sites and you'll have less of a fight, and quite literally a ****-ton of traffic if you can rank on page one when September and October rolls around.

Many online ecommerce sites that sell Halloween Costumes have their pages optimized for the more competitive categories. These categories look like this.

    Halloween Costumes
    Adult Costumes
    Sexy Costumes
    [Insert Popular License here] Costumes
    Child Costumes
    Toddler Costumes
    Infant Costumes

If you want an easier SEO fight think of categories like these.

Kids or Adult [Insert Popular License here] Costumes
    Group Costumes
    Sexy Burlesque Costumes
    Funny Adult Costumes
    Funny Kids Costumes
    Cute Adult Costumes

    etc.

Think outside of the box a little bit, and even look at all of the categories on a site that you want to promote before diving in.

Halloween is a big niche, actually its ****ing huge and there are many different ways to take it on and promote.

Source: I used to work for an online Halloween Costume retailer.

PM me or ask here if you have any specific questions you would like to ask.

Her WSO Also has bonus videos on how to build a successful Squidoo Halloween site and how to make your Halloween PLR unique.

Also, I would try to dig the kwd down even deeper than you already are. For instance, instead of "alligator halloween costumes" I would try "alligator halloween costumes for boys" , "alligator halloween costumes for toddlers", "green alligatore halloween costumes", etc.

You would be surprised what people search for

I would also take some of the websites that you will be competing against and put them into the Google keywords tool website function to see what keywords those sites are using. Not everyone thinks this is an accurate method, but at the very least it will give you some new ideas.

You will definitely have to use long tail keywords to get anywhere this late in the year. Top costume sites begin serious promotion in Jan/Feb and build on their promotions till the October holiday.

You will not beat out big costume sites when you are starting in August - but you can focus on long tail and specialty popular costumes.

You don't need to own the pie - just get a slice of it.

Here is the weirdest example of a site ranking for a big keyword.

check this site out - it ranks number 5 for a keyword I wont reveal.

    Can anyone tell me how?

Remember- Halloween may only be once per year, but other events requiring costumes happen year round. How can you capitalize on THAT idea? Plays, costume parties, kids theme parties, etc...

  • Profile picture of the author TiffanyLambert
Another thing is - I buy 7 costumes during Halloween. Like Deborah said above, it's for other reasons. Scarlett is young enough that she plays dress up.

And sales actually begin in July and last through a little into November. So that's not a shabby timespan.

If you don't want to waste money on a domain, you can build Squidoo lenses. I like to do this and those that perform really well, I then go grab a domain for later. They rank fast too. I set one up on baby bunting costumes on July 30th and it's already gotten its first Google traffic.

That's probably a great idea , I started to work on a clients site 32 days ago , we have a contract for 30 keywords on page one (all costumes related) , almost half of those are on page 1 yet (from 300+), if you have a good budget to play with everything is doable , otherwise don't hope to bump on first page with home made wonna be SEO , when the season starts whoever is in business starts to look for his pieace of pie. Good luck

I've picked 4 company's each from UK and USA so I can promote their different company's.

    Is this advisable?

Depends. Does one site only have a handful of costumes you are wishing to promote while another has 30 to 50 of them? Pricing is also an issue, as well as if their affiliate managers are offering coupons for the busy Halloween season.

For example, if a site is offering a good discount coupon but only has a handful of costumes I'll try and promote that before I go with another merchant.

Quick question are you looking at CJ for promoting merchants? Hands down they have the most Halloween themed merchants with solid rev-shares to make it worth your while.

Hi Aaron, I think you already got it figured out, the question if you can outrank other sites... well yes but with the time frame remaining to amp your site to the ranking well it will surely be rough. Nevertheless you are right, never be put off by competetion, the task is doable with proper strategy and again, long tail keywords is the way to go.

I've seen people's sites rank in 2-3 weeks, with great content drip fed on to the site.

The backlinking is the most important part here, doing it all naturally but a little bit quicker if you get me.

ie don't blast 30 links to sites in 1 hour, that's just silly.

Lots of content on your website. Optimize around low competition keywords. Focus on "on-page" and "off-page" seo. Build up your valuable backlinks. Do article marketing and submit your site to the website directories. Keep developing content for your site each and everyday. Avoid article submitters.
