How do you define being "Rich"?

by Khemal 62 replies
Ok so everyone wants to be rich, right? Everyone wants to make money or you won't be here. So here's my question:

When would you consider yourself to be Rich and how would you measure it?

Personally, I'd consider myself rich when my children's futures have been secured and my wife and I have enough to retire comfortabaly and still have some left over to spoit the grand kids What about you? When do you think you'd be rich and how would you know it?

Good question. This always brings me back to Citizen Kane... everyone saw Charles Kane as rich and wealthy beyond belief... but he died alone (start classic "rosebud" clip).

Rich isn't just monetary... anyone who thinks so will end up with a hole that they strive to fill and never will be able to. Hence... having kids made me "rich" beyond any money I could ever make. It creates a sense of self worth (another "rich" quality).

I strive to make sure my family is taken care of financially... however I no longer marvel over "being rich" as "having a lot of money." That mindset is simply a immature one.

Isn't it interesting how one's perception of "rich" changes as they grow older or have kids? Ask a 16 year old this same question and ask an 80 year old and you'll get some very stunning answers.

I think Rich is a state of mind really. Some feel rich by looking at their bank account balance and others see wealth in the eyes of their grand kids.

So if being rich is a state of mind, then it really has nothing to do with money unless your mind sees money as a means to fullfill it's needs...

                Interesting.

                I am rich.

Good health, loving family and a few great friends. What else is there?

If you're talking funds as in liquid assets, sadly I have little. It wouldn't take a great deal of money to make me comfortable. Obviously paying the bills is first and being able to take a vacation would be great.

                Maybe a new car.........

If I had a new car I'd be rich.

                  Hi,

rich is when you have made it, when your making more money than you can spend.
of course this is different for different people family is wealth, health is wealth but i think the above definition strives well.

For me, it is being wealthy, have lots of money.
But the most impirtant thing is that to be able to help others to gain independence, such as financial independent and etc.
There is no greater joy than helping others to succeed.

You can buy a damn good doctor or healer to help you to obtain good health with the right amount of money. I've seen miracles happen, but it takes money to fly them or yourself to the right person to heal you. Your health should definitely be a priority over buying a house, car, etc if you are rich.

I think it's a way of life. When being rich becomes a way of life, you essentially stop thinking about money. It no longer has power over you, because you have mastered and gained power over it yourself. Money is not a cause, it is an effect, and it's an effect of successful conditioning of your mind to be open to wealth. You live your life as if you have an abundance of wealth, and then wealth, by the law of nature, will follow. But first you have to get your mind right, and to do that, being rich must become second nature..i.e. -a way of life. Just my view.

I used to think that rich meant money and money used to be my driving force for life. But things start to change once you get money.

Rich is so much more than money. When you actually have more money than you can spend, it really starts to expose all the other things that make your life feel empty.

For me, "rich" means being able to spend my days with my daughter as opposed to working a typical 9-5. "Rich" means having the time to work out daily, run my dogs, and cook dinner for my wife. "Rich" means sharing a bottle of wine or a cold one with lifetime friends reminiscing about things that happened a long time ago. "Rich" means helping others achieve something and having people look up to you because of your achievements.

Actually, I have no desire to be monetarily wealthy. Instead I live for the wealth of happiness and health. Being rich in these two areas is important -- money isn't and is merely a necessity for the basics like shelter, food, and travel. As long as I'm making enough money to enjoy the things we enjoy and travel a lot, we're happy. As for making enough to retire -- no thanks, I'd be bored.

lol... but a good view i think! But besides that view, I also think being rich is not all about money, although the money helps. It's about family and friends, and the many way's you choose to pass your wealth and knowledge on to others... paying it forward as it were. There are many people in the world who are monetarily wealthy, but morally and/or emotionally bankrupt, which makes them very Poor in my eyes. So I think being rich is about balancing things nicely all around.

I'm going to assume you meant this in monetary terms: in terms of wealth I consider rich meaning that I could stop working today and would never, ever have to work again and maintain the lifestyle of my choosing (almost there).

In non-monetary terms that one is easy for me because I've had some recent health issues, so its two things: family and health. I'm never taking my family or my health for granted again. I'm the happiest when I'm with them and when I'm feeling well. My view towards life and business has really been simplified since my last few trips to the emergency room.

If I died today I would feel that I was the luckiest man alive to have been blessed with such a wonderful family and friends. I've seen quite a few people pass on in my life, and I've never heard any of them say that they wished they worked longer hours, wished they had that nicer car, house, whatever...it's too bad that it took a trip to the emergency room to really wake me up.

    Peace,

    Rod

When I was working with a company for a moderate salary I want my income increased by atleast two fold. That time Rich means having a car , house and some bank balance and ofcource a high paying job. I got all these when i sarted my own business but I became poorer as I have no time for my kids , family. Now Rich means having sufficient time for your family , kids and also some time for social work.
So being Rich is not only having lot of money , it means if you have good health , Very supportive and loving family , have sufficient time to play with your kids and helping needy peoples.
I am on the way to become RICH.

  • Rich = money + what money can buy.

Wealthy = having everything you need + whatever else you want in life.

The two are not fungible. You can't swap rich for wealthy. Think in terms of what really matters to you.

Being rich means different thing to different people. It could be having all the luxury live can offer. It could be having having enough money to take care of you and your family for the rest of your life, and still have more than enough for your generation yet unborn.

Rich is living life to the fullest and sharing your wealth and knowledge with others so that they can enjoy what you have accomplished. Being rich also means having lots of people especially family and friends that support you and your goals for happiness.

Monetary wealth is something you can't take to your grave, but you can choose to impart them to charity or family. I believe that you can be rich by acquiring wealth and giving it back to others that helped you along the way. The purpose of gaining wealth is not just to enjoy the fruits of your labor but also to make them grow and be used for the common good when the time comes for you to leave Earth.

Some people have this misconception of rich people too that they think that it is a status that we should aspire since we can flaunt the wealth that we achieved and gain power to influence other people to our every whim. It shouldn't be that way. To be rich in spirit is something no money can ever buy. It's as universal as the golden rule. And no I am not talking about someone who has the gold that rules. If everyone shared not just wealth but knowledge then people wouldn't rely on money-making schemes, just impart good values that can help everyone be productive and a better human being.

If monks or priests take a vow of poverty, we should take a vow of charity. Being rich means you earn more to give more back.

I'll stick with the dictionary definition: "having wealth or great possessions".

That's usually better than making up your own definitions for words.

To me, "rich" means having more money than you know what to do with and could possibly spend. I do not consider myself "rich", but I do have a comfortable lifestyle. That fact alone may cause some other people to call me "rich", and to them I probably am. However, I could easily find enough stupid stuff to buy to spend every penny I have.

If you are going to have an actual definition of "rich" then it must be a definition that applies to all people. Otherwise, it is merely a relative comparison and can mean vastly different things depending on context.

Rich to me means a rich and full life. Doing exactly what I love to do each day. Waking up and having a choice. Traveling and living where I want. Money is part of that.

Being "rich" means having an abundance supply of material possessions. But for me being rich does not only mean having lots of money and properties.

I would consider myself "rich" because I have my family with me. I have plenty of time for my kids and spouse. I have heaps of trusted and dependable friends. And lots of blessings too

This is a great question that will lead to hundreds of different answers. What is rich to one person maybe isn't to the next person. Also you can be time rich as well - what I mean is that you can earn a decent amount but have a great lifestyle with a few hours work.

My definition of 'rich': To be able to sustain my desired lifestyle without physically working.

Just to add... I love sci-fi writer Harlan Ellison's definition of success: "If you are what you wanted be when you were a kid, you're successful."

Jarod that is a good definition of success. I would say rich is more fleeting and wealthy is what to really aspire to.

Meaning you can live your life at the level you want to without ever having to work again and be able to splurge on things which come up just because you want to.

  • Funny enough, several years back a survey was taken in the US that asked people to identify their social class such as very poor, poor, middle class, upper middle class, rich, or very rich.

More than 90% of respondents answered middle class.

How an individual defines rich tends to be very subjective. For me, earning several hundred dollars a day would make me rich. To another person, making several thousand dollars per day would make them rich.

For people who are accustomed to having very little (like the majority of the world's population) having fresh drinking water, plenty of food, a safe house, and decent medical care would make them rich.

Unfortunately I think the more you have, the more it takes to make you feel 'rich'.
