All countries are different ,economic also..

To rent the flat (very very simple flat) with all utility service costs about $200. Hard to live ,hard ...

You mean 16,900INR per month is the average salary of an Indian?

I think it is somewhere around $125 (7000 INR).

In Florida, U.S. - hourly minimum wage is $7.67 which is slightly higher than the federal which I believe is still $7.25. It varies from state to state.

Rent in my area is anywhere from $600 for a 1 bedroom to an average of $1200 for a 3 bedroom house. There are some options for low income housing.

The thing is most countries have high living standards & low incomes.
Here in California its $8.50 an hour, so to get buy on that income, you
Would need someone to split the rent with & some Gov. Aid.
Most jobs here don't pay min. Wage though.

In the UK, the statutory minimum wage is currently £6.08 per hour, which is $9.43 at today's exchange rate, for workers aged 21+. It'll go up very slightly in October.

(I think everyone would agree that the high overall cost of living here, including accommodation, food, transport, and so on, is such that $9 in the US is actually worth quite a bit more than the same amount here. Although £1 is about $1.50, most "general shopping" actually compares pretty closely on a direct £ for $ basis.)

The minimum where I'm at is $8/hr but it would be interesting if they really do decide to increase the wage to $10/hr

I feel like the problem is more of the lack of job availability than the actual pay that since most places are laying people off and cutting back..

I don't know what you mean by "the problems", but obviously the only problem the minimum wage was designed to address would indeed be hugely alleviated. Wage earners could actually come much closer to meeting their basic physical needs.

Without wage earners, entrepreneurs wouldn't exist, except as owners of their own jobs, who'd have to try to find time for marketing between fixing plumbing problems, scrubbing floors and toilets, greeting customers, and whatever else needs doing. Kind of takes the fun out of it.

So paying wage earners a living wage shouldn't be contingent on demonstrating that it would solve a variety of problems; it should be done because not doing so is indecent to the people that make it possible for the Wal Marts of the world to function at all.

Walmart isn't going to shut down their stores if they have to give their workers 30% more, but it might save them the trouble of offering classes to their full time workers on how to apply for government assistance programs, which conveniently shifts the cost of doing business from Wal Mart's shoulders to the shoulders of the taxpayers, who make up the fat difference between what Wal Mart pays, and what full time workers need just to live.

Great post. Please try to include hourly and average monthly if possible.

Friend in Ukraine just graduated University... First job pays $300/month She almost took one for 150/month.

Associate in Indonesia - college educated.... $600 a month (pretty good there). Rent was 75/ a month for a room (no A/C or private bathroom)

This is important and interesting information. Aside from the business implications, some of us that are already established are planning on moving around. For a living, all I need is a great internet connection and someone to help with the banking issues.

I 've been paying my models $10 about €8 an hour. Looks like min. in Estonia is slightly higher than in Lithuania.

Here's the stats for European countries
    Eurostat - Data Explorer

    Estonia:
    area: 44,000km2
    population: 1.3 million
    min wage €190
    4 room flat €100 - €200
    gasoline €1.33
Internet: WiFi is FREE (lightning fast cable is $24/mo)
Mobile internet from $1 per month. Mobile internet covers 110% of county, including forests, bogs, coastline and even extends a few miles into the sea.
The free internet is almost everywhere in larger cities. And we have 4 places that qualify for a city. Tallinn being the largest with population of half million.

There is at least one product created in Estonia that everyone has heard of - SKYPE.

My last day job paid $600/mo back in 1998. I haven't had a day job since then.

Well here on the Moon it is three moon rocks per hour, but the sky's the limit if you want to jump up the ladder (due to lack of atmosphere). On the downside, entertainment - although free - is the same every night . . . the Earth on widescreen.

I have heard through the intergalactic grapevine that it's 5 rings a day on Saturn but I think they've only upped the rate temporarily because it's Olympics year.

Philippines has around $228/month as minimum wage or P9,576 / month

A newly married couple both having jobs that pays minimum would be like this.

    Total gross income - P19,152
    Net (less Tax, SSS, Philihealth) - P15,352 / $365.42

    Expenses:
    House rental - 4500 / $107
    Electric (TV, Fridge, Electric fan) - P800 / $19
    Water - P250 / $5.9
    Internet/Cellphone - P999 / $23.78
    Transportation - P1,920 / $45.71
    Food - P3,500 / $83.33
    LPG - P150 / $3.5
    --------------------
    Total expenses - P11,119 / $264.73
    Excess/savings - P3,233 / $76.97

The above computation is for working class newly-wed couple....
You can live in luxury for $2,500/month

And I'm glad not being an employee anymore...

My monthly expenses is around $1,800 but still good because I have no monthly housing rental. That includes all bills and tuition/allowance of 4 college students...

    BTW, gas price is $4.9/gallon

In Australia the minimum wage is not set as a be all and end all for all workers. It's calculated based on award rates for different sectors and industries which is covered by scales. Those scales are based off of hourly rates which is usually based off of the particular task at hand, so in other words they grade what you do by scale and volume and specialty.

As per fairwork.gov.au "Australia's minimum wage is $15.96 per hour or $606.40 per week. Generally, employees in the national system shouldn't get less than this."

Now how that works in terms of the cost of living? Well most would say we are the lucky country and our problems are only first world. Tell most blue collar workers that and you will cop a swift jab to the face in most cases.

You can go out and buy milk, bread, coffee, tea, sugar, rice etc for under $20 but try telling your kids they are gonna eat rice and coffee for breakfast! The cost of fuel is relatively cheap as compared with some places in the EU. ATM unleaded fuel costs about $1.29 per liter, but then you have to take into account the size of our country and that we travel much further distances for work and travel unlike in the EU.

Ciggies and booze are priced through the roof because of high taxes. For example if you want a pack of smokes it will cost you between $15-$20 depending on the size and style and a six pack of beer will cost approximately $15.00. Electronics are priced pretty high (higher than US) with a new laptop costing between $700 and $1,200 depending on make and model.

And going out to eat at an average sort of place where you wont get a glass of beer thrown at your skull and where you also don't have to have some pompous toffy sucker waiter pouring you a glass of wine as if he has something stuck up his you know what will cost you between $20 and $40 for a steak, chips and salad.

I lived in Australia for a year.

From my experience, the rent, groceries and transport were the same as the UK, except you guys get 100x more in wages lol.

I think normal basic workers were getting something like $18-20. At the time that was about double the UK minimum wage.

But 125ml bottles of juice were about £2-2.5 compared to £1 in UK.

Basically, if you never left your house apart from to jump on a bus and buy standard groceries you'd be rich.

Decide to buy a bar of chocolate or go on a night out and you need a second mortgage lol.

              Hi Neighbours !

As Connie mentioned, the minimum wage in Malaysia is US$300. It was just implemented a few months ago. Mostly referring to remote areas for low end jobs in farms, small factories, sundry shops and etc.

In the cities, no one will accept such wage even for low end jobs. Entry level low-end would be about $400 or so. But they had to share uncomfortable accommodations, eat at stalls and/or stay with their parents. Several days before end of the month, they are normally out of cash already.

For entry level youngsters with degrees, the wage is very fluid. Depends on the company they're working for. I'd say from $600 to $900. Still, they have to stay with friends, albeit a bit more comfortable. But mostly would stay with their parents or relatives.

An office clerk ( no degree ) with 5 years experience can demand at least $800 to $1,000 monthly wage. A long-haul truck driver can demand $1,000 or more. So, you can guesstimate the rest - Accountant, Engineers & etc ( 5yrs ) $2,000 or so.

Minimum monthly expenses in Kuala Lumpur:
City suburb low end apartment 2 rooms => $200
              Travel expenses => $200
              Food => $200

In the most expensive city, i.e. Johor Bharu ( Singapore's neighbour ), minimum cost would be 20% more or even more.

Primary to Secondary Education is Free in Malaysia. Citizens pay a minimum of $0.30 ( 30 cents ) each time to get medical attention and medicines in Government Hospitals.

If the cost of living ( which affects cost of doing business ) in Malaysia increases further, then we can no longer compete with China, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and Philippines. Game over for Malaysia in terms of trade to Europe, US, Oz and Japan. To stay in business, we have to be innovative and stay efficient.

I am from Bangladesh, In my country minimum job wage is about $200.With this monthly wage is hard to live ... To rent the flat (very very simple flat) with all utility service costs about $100. Hard to live......

As a web developer It did not affect my living as I earn around 4 figure per month. But I realize people are just living here not enjoying their life. They live for living...Seems no hope. The political situation and Economic situation is going worse. ...Need to do something but not sure how......

Maybe yes, but not all countries having low cost of living are recommended for travelers.

      Cost-wise, I'll stay here, but pleasure-wise, I'll travel..

It depends on the purpose of traveling. If it's about adventure and landing one's foot on never-before-seen places, some travelers don't even care about the price. If it's just purely about leisure with consideration to budget, certain factors must be considered, too.

I am actually in Philippines and we are being bombarded by series of storms. The last time I was in Japan was 2 years ago (October 2009 - January 2010) and it was extremely cold in the North. I love the place though language barrier with locals is still a major problem...

I live in Belize, Central America. My farm manager makes about $350 US a month. Unskilled labor can be had for about $200 US a month. I have no idea what the minimum wage is.

Cheap labor is not always cheap, in fact it can be expensive.

Cost of living? Depends on your lifestyle. You can live like the natives for real cheap. Now if you want things like refrigerators, air conditioning, running water, electricity and drive a car your expenses go up. Way up.

A US lifestyle will cost you more in Belize than it does in the USA. Paradise does have a price.

        Fascinating thread.

I am from the Philippines. We normally don't base it on per hour but per day (8 hours). If I assume to base it on per hour, the minimum wage of an ordinary worker would be roughly 1.5 USD/hour.

My wife is a Government Elementary teacher and she is receiving a gross salary of 480 USD per month.

Talking about the Internet expenses here, the leading internet providers here are PLDT, Smart and Globe. These internet providers vary their internet service cost, but roughly you need to pay $25 a month for a 1mbs portable wifi connection.

Another option is to choose internet connection up to 10mbs which costs around $90 a month.

If you wish to have a much stable and fast connection, you need to pay up to $1200 a month. This plan is ideal for serious call centers. Yet, $90 a month is appropriate only for a single user.

    Cheers,

Hello Adie, where are you in the Philippines?

To everyone, I forgot to mention in my previous post that the cost of living varies from one city to the other.

In my location, Iligan, Mindanao, you could have a better life if you are earning at least 350 USD/month.

I am in Batangas City and the cost of living here is actually a little bit lower than in Manila, but the quality of life is far better here. Fresh air, lots of resorts. Your internet cost is miles ahead than mine. $350/month is good especially if you are single and living outside Manila.

Well I'm sure US has been done plenty by now so I'll give specifics on where I live in Las Vegas, Nevada.

      All values are per month
My rent for a one bedroom one bath place: $635
      Water: $30
      Gas/Electric: about $40
      Internet (20MB): $30 for now but it's usually $50-60
      Car Insurance: $93
      Food/gas/fun: $800

      Extras (per month)
Virtual Assitant from the Philippines: $500
      Other business expenses: $500
      Savings: $1000

So I'm in the military and I make about $3600 a month which isn't much but it pays my bills and gives me enough money to invest into my businesses. My wife lives in Manila in the Philippines and that's where the "other business expenses" comes from. I'm helping her start her own shoe business and it's profitable although it's more of a slow trickle right now.

I'm thinking of moving to the Philippines for a short while, maybe on a six month visa just to get out of the US for a bit and continue my online business from there. I know it's much cheaper, but everytime I go down there I always feel like there should be much more to that country. It's cheap, but it's not exactly bustling with great things to do.

Just like anywhere though, the price of living is higher than what you're making. The problem is they keep raising minimum so businesses need to keep raising prices so they take advantage and raise them more than they need to while they're at it.

Here Colorado our minimum wage is $7.64. If you live in our bigger cities, than minimum wage is not going to get the job done. In the more rural areas one can at least survive. You won't have any fun money but you'd be able to afford rent and food. As for gas and a car? That would really depend on if you have to make monthly payments etc.

In Brazil minimum wage is about US$350/month(plus some benefits) for 44hours/week schedule

the thing is, Brazil is a very expensive country. Example:

    - Toyota Corolla costs US$35,000 (Honda Civic about the same)
    - 2 bedroom apartment(60 square meter) costs about US$150,000 in big cities or about US$100,000 in smaller cities, rent is about US$900/month
    - anything electronic(like laptops, computers, tv, audio, mobile, etc) you can expect to pay 2x the price in the US for the exact same model
    - hotel about US$100/night
    - MC Donalds you can expect to spend US$8~9 (Big Mac, fries, soda)
    - Simple restaurant about US$15
    - 10mbps internet about US$70/month
    - haircut US$15~20

So you need at least US$2,000/month to live a simple life

Here in my country, there is no minimum wages. Generally for unskilled labor, the wage started from USD 60/month and for skilled and educated employees, It is started from USD 150/month. For varsity graduate the salary is around 2.5-3 USD/hour in starting.
The deviation is really high and it's affect the living cost as well.

The minimum job wage is at RM900 (USD300) and RM800 (USD267) per month for the peninsula and east Malaysia has announced on 1st May 2012.

In Malaysia, we can still go to hawker store to have our dinner. A plate a noodle cost USD1.50 and a cup of coffee cost USD0.50......it has increased 20% if compared with 2-3 years ago.

For a fine dinning, for 2 persons, normally will cost above USD50.

Don't forget also the effects of taxation. Some countries have a flat rate tax system where you pay a % of your earned income from the very first penny earned. Other countries including the Uk where I am, have a tax allowance that gives everyone at least the first part of their salary free of tax (In the UK this is about £7.5k per year that you can earn without having to pay tax or national insurance contributions).

In what part of America is minimum wage $2,500 per month? In the United States, to make $2,500 a month working at minimum wage, you'd have to work about 86 hours a week.

Not really. The average minimum wage in the U.S. is around $7.25/ hour. Based on a 40 hour week, that would be $1160/month before taxes.

The highest minimum wage here is in San Francisco - $10.24/hour. But even that's only $1638/month. And the cost of living there is astronomical; the average rent is well over $1,000/month.

I'm from Denmark as you might have noticed.

The minimum hourly wage for people over 18 is a bit hard to set, but around 16,87USD maybe a little more.

Oh and the prices are really freaking steep also so this isn't a lot of money.

Here in Washington state, the minimum wage is $9.04 an hour. Rents around my neck of the woods is $600+ for a cheap piece of crap apartment or mobile home to $1100+ for a decent 3 bedroom apartment or house. I live in a military town so the average wage is about $3500 a month, which doesn't include military housing and subsistence allowances. They vary depending on pay grade.

I think it's important to compare what the wage actually compares to living costs. I think monthly rent is a good comparison for that. Can people include that as a rough guide?

          UK:
          €1,244.42/month (EU stat)
          £6.08/hr

          Rent:
          >£1500 London
          Perhaps >£650 outside of London.

So with £6hr & £650/month it's ~100hours a month to break even, or 26 hours work before you can start earning something to pay for everything else. The working week limit is about 40 hours so you've got 24 hours or ~£145 a week to pay for all your bills and everything.

It's hard on minimum wage. Really hard.

          But in Argentina it's harder.

Take a doctor. Might earn $1200USD/month in the capital. Again at least half of that again will go on rent. The difference is that you've studied 10 years to qualify and get there, that's the difference between Arg & UK.

          edit:
Here's the wikipedia reference. I don't think it tells the whole story but it's a useful rough guide.

The company pays him $50-$60 per month. YES PER MONTH! And he doesn't complain. He travels 2 hours per day from a village to come here to work.

That sounds incredibly high. The Australian dollar isn't that different from the U.S. dollar and rents here are comparable to what you quoted. But the minimum wage in most states is only about half of yours.

Poland (I'm from Poland) 329 euro (more or less $450)
    Czech Republic 324 euro,
    Slovakia - 308 euro, w
    Estonia - 278,
    Bulgaria - 117.
Ireland 1499 euro (Second place in Europe after Luxembourg, 1673 euro),
    Holland - 1398 euro,
    UK - 1207,
    Spain - 633.

I live in UK and Poland but I'm not going to talk about costs of living in UK because other done that already but I can say something about Poland.

Electricity bill every two months: $50 (keep in mind that I do not watch TV, no video games, etc. only laptop and PC for about 18 hours a day).

    Gas bill: $15 every month

Car insurance: $300 a year (with 60% discount for non collision driving, and because of enigine 1.9 TDI Diesel)

Internet, mobile Internet and TV bill: $30 a month

Mobile phone and another mobile Internet bill: $30 a month

Food: about $300-$500 a month (no eating out, hookers and buzz included!)

    Rent: $150 a month.

    Fuel: about $100 a month

Private Health and life insurance: $100 a month.

That's basics for me. I don't spend much, but I know people who are easily spend 5x what I do so...

Now, where is Polish minimal wage with this basics? And I'm counting this only for myself! If I add my girlfriend, costs will get at least 60% higher.

In Hungary, the minimum wage is $420 per month, about $2.5 per hour.
The tax is roughly 34% of your salary, but it includes a health insurance that virtually covers everything (except dental treatment), and it also includes your contribution to your pension (which is about 60-70% of your salary, after 40 years of work).

As a senior accountant, my net salary is about $950 per month plus benefits (free public transport, free cell phone, $60 for food, free gym).

The prices are quite high, but the food and the services are much cheaper than in Western Europe.

Where I live, which is the second biggest city in Romania (I think), with $2000 one can rent a 2-bedroom apartment in a good neighborhood, eat only out (or order in), go out every night (if the liver can take it, anyway), and take only the cab.

    Private healthcare (Married Couple) R 2,000.00 $211
    Water Free (It's Africa )

3 Large Cities (Johannesburg (Gauteng), Cape Town, Durban)
JHB the largest and where most of the money making activities happen.

    Wikipedia Reference:
Although Gauteng (JHB) is the smallest of South Africa's nine provinces—it covers a mere 1.4% of the country's total land area—the province is responsible for a third of South Africa's gross domestic product (GDP).[6] Gauteng generates about 10% of the total GDP of sub-Saharan Africa and about 7% of total African GDP.[7]

Pretty amazing how so many countries have such low salaries around the world. I remember talking to my wife and asking her about how much she would make per month if she got a job versus starting her own business. She said she would be making about 11,000 pesos per month which is about $269 as of this writing.

So with my help she's making nearly double what she was making before and she can start making money with a business she wants to start.

Here in Finland we don't have a general minimum wage. The minimum wage depends on the condition agreement of the field you work on.

However, the general beginner salary you often hear about is 7,50€ (9,60$) per hour, which makes 1200€ (1460$) per month. Of course there are many jobs that pay a lot less. An apprentice could receive as less as 900€ (1155$) per month. After taxes that won't be anywhere near enough for a living.

The price of a bread starts from 1,50$ and gasoline is about 2$ per liter. A small bottle of Coke is 2,30$, with a return of 0,25$. A small one room apartment around the capital city would have a rent of 750$/mo. If you don't mind slightly lower quality, you might be lucky to find one for 640$/mo!

And the taxes here make sure that you won't get rich.
