This is good news for those that are using facebook ads

Fake accounts and users have been the main reason a lot of huge advertisers have been pulling out of facebook ads

This is a smart move on Facebook's part now that they've gone public they need to protect their stock as much as they can

I'm assuming the only reason they're finally taking initiative is they're trying to draw people back into facebook ads I guess we'll see how it works for them

I'm a little sad because I'm friends with a lot of fake users on FB. They're all funny people, troll groups I call them.

I hope this doesn't hurt all the Fiverr accounts, because that will make it harder to buy Likes and Comments on Fb

True. Usually they will test you to see if you're legit. Main way to do this is Friend Identify. Really tricky, you need to Identify about 8 people's photos before you login in. Facebook makes you do this if you're suspected of being fake. You fail, then they ban your account. I had a fake account going for a while, they did this to me and terminated that account.

A scary thing is though, they did this to my real account! I went down to San Diego for vacation (I live in L.A) and when I logged onto Facebook from the hotel computer, they pulled that Friend Identify crap on me. Of course I passed, but it made me mad I couldn't log in just because I was using FB from somewhere else. I was scared also because I've got about 1000 friends on FB, I try to add more everyday to promote my sites.

So I think the accounts getting terminated are the ones with 2000+ friends. Good riddance to them I say

Same thing happened to me when I was at a hotel in another state. However, I don't think they ban you if you fail. I know this because I failed. My acct is a totally personal acct... but when the pics came up, I just couldn't tell one old high school classmate's baby from another. :rolleyes:

So, I couldn't log on from this other location. But once I got back home using my regular IP address, no problem. It was all just a security measure to make sure my acct hadn't been hacked. I was ok with that.

No, that was well put.. It's true though, Facebook ads used to be a highly talked about subject with lots of ebooks and videos about it, up until lately.

I am not saying the 83 million fakes are the reason, but sounds like this new move by FB can ignite new spark into their paid ads again. That's great for real people and real online marketers like us.

I think it's a good thing. FB TOS is clear about only having one account. I think that a lot of the duplicate and false accounts are just dead weight to them and FB should clean them out.

? Now they just need to delete the 1 gazillion fake face book likes that have been purchased and it would be half way cleaned up.

WF has been banning since many years ago, it doesn't even have to be on the ground of multiple accounts, spamming, arrogance, abusive members e.t.c are decisively dealt with by temporary or permanent ban.

If facebook is going to ban some users, there must be a criteria according to which it will take decision whom to allow or not allow to use it. I think it will ban those accounts which have been create for the sole purpose of faking. There is no need to worry who are using it for genuine purpose that means for socializing themselves.

  Facebook is not deleting these accounts. The simple reason is that they don't know which accounts they are. The article says that they manually reviewed a small subset of accounts and determined what percent were fake and used this to estimate how many total accounts were fake. It doesn't sound like they have a system in place for identifying all 45.8 million. Facebook will delete fake accounts when they find them, but they aren't yet going out looking for accounts to delete. And they won't until they have a system that's highly accurate because accidentally deleting good accounts is sure to piss people off. They just wanted to report on how many they think are fake.

83M fake accounts I think it will affect IM for Facebook in terms like buying FB likes will be more expensive lol. On a serious note, I think this is a step to protect "real users" from spams, and hackers or other reasons why people don't use their real accounts to deal with them.

It's a great decision. But how are they gonna check it anyway?

Many of the big companies do it: Google also constantly removes spam sites from their search results.

Facebook is just a bit late with doing it. Maybe to increase it's share price by showing how many members they have? It didn't help.

Well I only have one account and use Pages to promote everything, so this really doesn't have an effect on me. That said, you really don't need two Facebook accounts. You really don't. Facebook profiles aren't like email addresses.

Someone could have a very good reason to be using a fake name on Facebook. And everything else about that account would be very real, and all the demographics would sync up and the ads would be targeted. What's in a name?

Who cares if someone uses a fake name? They could have a perfectly good reason and I think it's great to get rid of fake accounts that are just there to give fake likes and other spam but to get rid of perfectly legit accounts that people want to use to "hang out" online with their 50 closest friends and not have to deal with getting friend requests from stalkers or other people they don't want to talk to would be going a bit overboard, in my opinion.

It will be interesting to see how Facebook actually conduct this culling without taking out a lot of genuine accounts as well. They must be either manually going through all these fake accounts or are not that bothered about the genuine accounts that will get destroyed.

Facebook cares. It does FB no good to monitor your activity and mine the data to sell to other companies if the profile isn't a real identifiable person. FB data is only really useful if it's linked to other existing information about you.

I expect to see FB user verification get tougher, something along the lines of PayPal. Someday you may have to provide a bank account or credit card number to be able to access your FB profile.

No one seems to understand what business Facebook is really in. Hint: It isn't social media.

This will not happen. FB is based on ease of access and getting as many people to join as possible and to interact through the service.

Frankly, I don't think FB cares one whit about most fake accounts, such as pets and duplicates. Having pet accounts is an endearing feature to many members.

FB does care about its stock price and potential investor lawsuits claiming company value was based on representations FB has 940 million or so members, when in fact the number is at least 83 million less.

Well sucks for me, since everyone and their uncle is on Facebook I have an official "Work/networking" account similar to what you would find on Linked In and a second private account with many inappropriate things that is only for my closest friends.

Me too. I have several Fake accounts. Do you really want your clients to see how you have good times with a couple of friends? Didn't think so.

I also have one with a pretty Russian girl pic (this was experimental, not used for a long time, once in a while I log into that account and it has a gazillion friend requests - all guys :-P

As it says in the article, Facebook only officially allows your business to be a "page" that people can "like" etc.. They don't want you to create a normal account for that.

I haven't been bothered much by false accounts in my experience of FB, but I have been annoyed by those "popular pages" that post random photos and beg for LIKES, ending up with about 15,000 from all the monkeys that just do what they ask.

Great ... fake accounts are just so fake. I know a lot of IMers feel a sense of self-entitlement to spam every web property on the Internet, but glad to see them taking action, as most web properties eventually do.

The article said nothing about facebook banning 83 Million accounts. Where did you get this information?

Facebook has stated they estmate there are 83 Million 'fake' accounts. They have said nothing about deleting them all.

In fact, the article states that Facebook estimates that only 1.5% or 14.3 Million are "undesireable".

Facebook disables "any false account it finds". That is their standard practice.

Nowhere have they said they will be wholesale wiping out 83 Million accounts.

Thank god! There are so many spam accounts on Facebook, 83 million is just the tip of the iceberg. So many VA's now just have 2 or 3 or more accounts on Facebook just to spam links and spam friend requests. It's gotten out of hand and I'm glad Facebook is doing something about it.

Will it change IM? Not if you're a serious internet marketer who understands that spam is not a long-term business strategy.

Define fake? I have a personal and a business one. I was advised when doing Facebook ads you should do it from a second account, away from personal activity. As someone who likes to keep his personal and professional life separate, it only made logical sense.
