Best e-commerce site platform

INTERNET MARKETING

Hello all,

I have a customer that wants to set up his own website to sell compter UPS equipment. He will be taking online orders and then drop shipping these products through another company. Can anyone give me a suggestion for a website application that supports these requirements?

I would also recommend x-cart, litecommerce, and cubecart.

Perhaps by far the most important feature is whether the cart is SEO friendly or not. If you make a mistake on that, you will pay dearly later on.

Michaael,

This is awesome! I am a firm believer in open source, and all of my sites to date are on Drupal. I didn't know that this was out there, I guess I never searched Sourceforge for ecommerce. Thanks a bunch!

I'm using CubeCart for one of my eCommerce sites. It has a great SEO mod available. OScommerce isn't bad, but might be a bit more intense than you're looking for. I really like ZendCart, but I don't think that's free any more.

I've used it first hand and it worked great. Like Drupal, it's probably a lot less user-friendly than some other options, but also infinitely flexible.

Looking into Magento, it looks like the developer is putting it out in open source to get everyone hooked, but may be trying to position it later to sell for a big windfall to a Google or yahoo class buyer? I may be a little paranoid, but it could make for a difficult transistion if you dont like the "new" owner!

Which works for me, I'm pretty good with figuring stuff on my own, and open source software usually has great community support within it as well.

But by providing it for free it dominates markets with word of mouth just like FireFox etc.

I mean Joomla is one of the best open source CMS softwares out there and they probably could have sold what they have going on to a big company for hundreds of millions.

Interestingly, the copyright of Joomla is owned (I think) by the individual code contributers. This means its collectively owned by hundreds of developers across the world. I am not sure such a creature could be sold

One that a lot of IMers know nothing about and yet is great for any of these projects and very easy to set up. You can add your own links for free and has a complete shopping cart feature which lets you use any sort of website you like. The premium also has a great desktop feature for seeing orders as they come in.

You can link to most payment gateways or they can use their own merchant facility and process manually.
