Godaddy Go From Hero To Zero With One Move

Since all the recent changes at the top of godaddy I have been wondering how long it would take for them to do something insanely dumb!

Ok IMHO its insanely dumb

We all know they used to give free private registration when you bought 5 or more domains, well as of yesterday apparently they have stopped that.

Now while I assume they have got a good reason for it, they have just lost me as a customer and while I am sure they have clients with more domains than mine, it still will hit me pretty hard.

So off to namecheap who cost a little but more but you get free privacy with one domain, or maybe they will ditch that too.

Now I have a Godaddy "executive" who looks after my account, who is only in Mon-Fri and have sent him an email asking considering how many domains i have with them whether I can still have it free.

If not, time to start asking competitors how cheap they will give me transfers for 100's of domains

Then off to change my blog and send out an email to my subscribers to tell them I no longer recommend GoDaddy

    I have been moving all of my domains off of godaddy for a while now. I can't stand them. Unfortunately when I buy domains most of them are from people who already have them on Godaddy so they just transfer to my account and I have to wait to move off of Godaddy. I use namecheap and moniker. Also I just started using namesilo you should check them out. Cheap to transfer there and free private reg.

    About 2 years had a big issue with godaddy. They took one of my domains and said I had a complaint for spam. Took it offline without ever asking my side of the story.

    I have transferred my domain names from GoDaddy to NameCheap.

    Yes, GoDaddy has a lower price than NameCheap with appropriate coupons.

    However, considering the free domain privacy service, NameCheap is way better than GoDaddy.

      I never understood the GoDaddy-bashing. I've been with them for going on 10 years and I can count on one hand the number of issues I've had in those 10 years.

        I've had godaddy for - jeez, I can't remember how many years since I registered my first domain - 10 years ago, maybe more (is that possible?) - and I've only received outstanding top-notch service from them. Granted, every time I log into my account I can't find anything and have to remember their interface all over again, but the phone support - customer and technical, at all hours of the day and night, pretty much - has been what's kept me as a customer. I've worked with other hosts on behalf of some clients, and after I'm done, I'm even MORE glad I have godaddy.

        Agree. I've been using their domain service for about 2 years, I think. Not one problem.
        I see others complain about all the screens for oto offers and the like. So what? I like the way they send monthly updates on all your domains, easy to understand, and yes, they have very competitive prices.

        Oh almost forgot, enjoy looking at Danica Patrick, too. :-)

          Are you aware that some of those updates are done to lock you into their service. Per ICann you cannot move a domain for either 60 days after making changes to the domain. That's one of the reason why godaddy sends out those notices for you to make changes during seasons where other services offer discount coupons like Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years etc.

          Understand this when people complain in mass it's not always just because their making it up. It's because it is coming from their experiences. As far as domains some of us here are veterans so an experience of 2 to 10 years means nothing to us.

          So, it's probably a good idea rather than just assuming, because you haven't had any negative experiences yet, that they do not exist. Heck, I think I was with godaddy for 3 or more years before I had troubles with them.

          Also, try to find out who you are talking too. There's a difference between going by some kid who has been using godaddy's service for 5 years as a register for domains, or some guy who has used godaddy to register their domains for 10 years, and someone who ran a Hosting service for 10 years. The guy with the hosting company will see enough to have a better opinion on what's good and what's not, because not only will he see how he is treated by the different companies, but he will see how his customers are treated as well.

          I ran a few small hosting companies and I have also done web design and hosted some of my clients, as well as designing web sites and selling them on Ebay, btw this was when flipping was just a idea waiting to be born, I was there.

          I posted this on another thread, but I believe it holds true here;

          Don't forget go daddys magical disappearing domain act and the fact that their system magically forgets to send notices that domains will be coming up for renewal, while also making your domain disappear from your list in their system. oh, and lets not forget that they don't abide by icann and if you have any issues you will have to file claims against them.

          I'm with namecheap now and would recommend them or enom.

          I'm thinking maybe we should start asking these folks who love godaddy so much some serious questions.

          How long have you been purchasing domains?
          How long have you been hosting your domains?
          Are you on drugs? lol
          When you see an event, do you sometimes change what you saw to match what everyone else saw?
          Do you wear Glasses?
          Do you work for GoDaddy?
          Can you read?
          Do you even know how many domains you have?
          Do you actually use the domains you own?
          Do you believe that the facebooks creator, created fb in his dorm room?
          Do you believe that fb has close to a billion users?
          Are you wearing an Orange Jumpsuit with a Smiley on the back?

            On one hand you say they abide by ICann rules by not allowing transfers for 60 days, then you tell us they don't abide by ICann rules. lolol indeed.

              I never said that godaddy abides by ICann. The 60 day rule is Icann's.
              My experience has been that when you file the claim against Godaddy with Icann, they will do what's right, but if you don't file a claim, you're toast lol

                I agree that namecheap is most probably a better service, but I was really happy with Godaddy about three days ago, when I realised that about 35 of my domains had expired in the last month. (They actually sent plenty of reminders, but I hadn't updated my email address , and had disabled the auto-renew feature.)

                I logged in, expecting the worst, but was able to renew all domains, no probs. Plus all links/redirections were working once the domains went live, within the hour. (btw, I don't use godaddy for hosting.)

                Although their emails had warned me that there may be an $80 recovery fee (each), or something, there wasn't. On top of an automatic discount (about 10%, I think) I also used a code and got another 25% off.

                So, all-in-all, I was happy , and actually feel as though they might have improved a bit lately.

      Yes you are right it is less than 50c a month per domain but I don't just have 1 domain.

      Finally got a message from my "executive" at godaddy and privacy has gone from $0 to $4 per domain

      I buy roughly 300 new domains a year add to that renewals of about 1500 domains (which I also used to get free private registration for) and that amount to $7000 a year

      Now he has agreed to give me free private reg for new purchases which is something I guess but I am still going to be looking at other places

      Thanks guys who added your helpful responses about registrars you use and I will check them out

      And I have no complaints about godaddy up until now, they have been excellent but looks like I will be buying new domains with them and when they are expiring, move them to namecheap

    I always preferred namecheap in all honesty, any day of the week. Sadly Godaddy has a wide offer of international domains, which I use a lot, and namecheap doesn't. In that case Godaddy is one of my only options.

    If you're with godaddy run to namecheap or enom immediately.

    The reason why I can't stand them is that they don't follow industry policies and rules. Also, because I have had domains stolen from me by godaddy. when it came near renewal time they wouldn't send out the notices, nor would the domains showup in their system. some would appear later with the option to pay close to a hundred bucks to renew, otthers never showed up again at all.

    Real Talk here I have been around for a long time like back when Network Solutions was the only options and domains cost 35 bucks per year and you had to get 2 years.

    I was with GoDaddy for years. They are just not very friendly these days, and honestly, NameCheap is a better service.

    Godaddy has been known to yank domains back from 'owners' when they received too many spam complaints(supposedly).

    NameCheap gives the free privacy protection. That's why I recommend them.

    GoDaddy are what they are. They spend a fortune advertising themselves to the masses, people who don't yet have a clue about domain names or anything like that. They are a simple web host that offer simple services. If that's all you want then they are probably fine for you.

    Whenever I release a product that needs to be installed on servers it is almost always only the people using GoDaddy that have issues.

    I think you'll end up liking Namecheap a whole lot more than GoDaddy. On top of the free Whois Guard, their checkout process is way faster.

      lol! I've got plenty of domains at GoDaddy (no hosting though, man they suck at that) and while I want them off of there, it just isn't worth the time or hassle. Their interface has to be one of the most atrocious I've ever seen though. Walking an offline client through buying a domain at Godaddy is always comedy gold.

    Yeah I also see that they have whacked the price right up for .info domains.
    Also you can only change the nameservers now after you have registered the domains not on registration as you used to be able to. This is also very annoying as it takes it longer to configure in your hosting.

    I will give namecheap a go I think

        they'll definitely take care of you and actually give you credit for unused time. another thing that godaddy claims they do, but don't.
