Just thought I would throw it out there as I have found many entrepreneurs say they never sleep, but they work all day

Could this be a bit of an exaggeration? The body does require some rest at some point, am I correct.

I have actually tried this, and I found out that - If I do stay up for 24 hours, than the very next day I would fall asleep maybe for an hour or two and then I would be ok. But eventually I did sleep.

I remember In my teens and early 20's I could stay up for days, even weeks at times, but now I don't see how this is possible.

What are your thoughts on this? Can you stay awake all the time, and if so how do you do it?

If I don't get enough sleep my productivity goes down. But then I'm not in my twenties anymore

    Yeah, I need to sleep.

Once I've been writing for a long time my eyes start to get so heavy I can't keep them open and I start seeing double lol.

Funny you ask that - I was up until 4:00 am in California launching my first WSO - and its cranking - whoo hoo!

But as far as regular sleep - I work A LOT. Probably 14 - 16 hours per day right now. Its a sprint as I'm spinning up new projects. I try to work in 90 minute bursts and then do something completely different (Modern Warfare 3 or the gym) and then back at it.

I can run on 4 hours of sleep a night for quite a while. The book the 4 hour body by Tim Ferris teaches you how to get less sleep but feel fully rested. Check it out

Congrat's on your WSO, but you may need some sleep now.. Your signature link is not working because it has two 'www.warriorforum.com'(s) in it.

(Unless I'm just seeing double, and in need of some sleep myself. )

EDIT: Looks like it's fixed now!

I try to get enough sleep at least 6 hours or more. There really is no reason to stay up for days. We have to respect our bodies and minds and not abuse them.

If you have bi polar tendencies it can be easy to get into a manic phase and stay up for long periods but there comes the crash later.

I know how to organise my time well.

Actually ashcornejo, Kim's first rule inspired me to start this thread. She said she is up by 6, and some of the responses to that were interesting.

For me, after trying to do the 24 hour thing, I have decided to set a schedule of being sleep by 11pm then back up to start the day at 3am.

I just wanted to see if most folks have a similar schedule, or am I falling behind.

Thanks everyone, it does look like just about all of us are getting some sort of rest at some point throughout the day

I get nine hours per night and then do the errands I need to do for the day and then begin my work for the rest of the evening until it's time for bed. Everyday feels the same and it gets old but it's extremely rewarding. Seven days a week I work and it doesn't feel like work. I guess I'm doing ok.

I actually love to do this when I can as well. For some reason, I get a lot more done working at night. That being said, good sleep the majority of the time is important. I find that if I am really going on a project one week, having a day where I take a really long nap helps restore my body and mind.

Up until a year or two ago I went on about 20 hours of sleep a week. I have slowed down a lot lately and actually sleep about 6 hours a night now.

As a kid, I rarely slept and when I got into marketing in my twenties I would often go days at a time without sleep, simply because I couldn't sleep. When my mind gets going it doesn't want to stop, so I just go with it.

I also always have and still do my best thinking during the wee hours.

Every one is wired differently. People do not become entrepreneurs by accident. Certain traits go hand-in-hand with others.

Yeah, I'm a night owl too, though I try to discipline myself to go to bed at least by 3 a.m. though I don't always succeed.

Actually, I've tried for years to make it to bed before midnight, or at least 1 a.m.

But that's like telling someone with a bedtime of 10 pm to go to bed by 6 or 7 pm. Not going to happen!

Last night I worked on a wonky web page on a deadline and was up till 8!!! Then got about 4 or so hours of sleep. And I'm paying for it now.

And yes, I also find that night time is among my most productive time.

Of course, who knows. I might be more productive during the day if only I went to bed earlier???

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one.. I totally relate to what you are saying. It's 4.30am here at the moment, and each day I keep telling myself that I will make it to bed by 2am, lol. Yesterday it was 6am, and I think today is gonna be the same.

I don't think they mean it when they say they never sleep, just work a lot.

I subscribe to the theory that some people are sprinters and some are marathoners. I'm a marathoner. I find I'm most productive when I pace myself. Although I've had a few experiences with working hard (and sleeping little) for a week, then taking a week to work less and rest.

It's all about what works for you. And you'll never know until you try it all out. Testing in life is as important as testing in IM

I recommend a IMHO very interesting interview with successful entrepreneurs on the subject "how hard they work".

Among the 12 people interviewed were such well known guys as Darren Rowse (Problogger), Rand Fishkin (SEOMoz), Aaron Wall (SEO Book), Neil Patel (Quicksprout), Chris Pearson (Thesis Theme), Shawn Collins (Affiliate Summit) and Yaro Starak (Entrepreneurs-Journey).

Turns out they all have a 7 day work week and work an average of around 80 hours per week. For me that interview pretty much put an end to the myth of the "4-hour-week" ...at least I think that one has to work very hard to get there.

On the other hand I for my part feel so compassionate about my work... that it doesn't really feel like "work"... I simply do what I like to do. Having the freedom to adjust my work to my own rhythm and my own inner clock is unparalleled and worth more than money.

I am and always have been a night owl... and I hardly ever sleep more than 6 hours. Sometimes I have to force myself to take breaks.
With those guys in the interview above... I think I'm in excellent company.

I also read that you will start hallucinating after 3 nights of not sleeping.
I've heard that, too. There was a radio DJ who ran some kind of promotion based on him staying up as long as he could and after a while he started hallucinating on the same cycle the sleeping brain dreams on. So he was essentially having waking dreams.

Our bodies are built to get enough sleep. So what can be considered enough sleep for you? It depends on you. Sometimes, there are people who feel they've slept good enough already for a 3 to 4-hour worth of sleep. Some slept for 12 hours and they still feel tired when they woke up. Generally, it's recommended to have at least 8 hours of sleep. I sleep every day though I don't meet the 8-hour quota sometimes.

What happens when a horse is forced to run more than it's suppose to?

Resting is a huge part of success... I mean some people can stay up all night or sleep too little... but ask yourself if it's healthy for your body. Is it?

Sometimes when I get hungry and don't eat.. the hunger goes away. But that doesn't mean that "It's just me therefore I'll just keep working..." it means that your body is now eating itself since there is no food.

    Get your rest on.

I think its just over stating that entrepreneurs don't sleep. I am an entrepreneur and I can't fulfill my duties and responsibilities when I lack sleep. I don't know if you feel the same, but one time I had only an hour sleep the following day, I feel that my head is so light and my eyes are terrible. I don't know if it goes with age but then I think a person needs atleast 6 hours sleep.

What are your thoughts on this? Can you stay awake all the time, and if so how do you do it?
When I was a teenager and far more stupid than I am now... my friends and I had a bet to see how long we could go without sleeping at all. I managed 8 days (and turned into a total bitch), the 'winner' lasted 10 days (and was only slightly more responsive than a zombie).

Unfortunately, my brain turned to mush after about 48 hours...

Being so much older and wiser now (hah!), the last time I did a marathon work run was about 2 years ago. 80 hours with no sleep to meet a software launch deadline. After about 50 hours I just wanted to croak RedBull and excessive use of energy drinks got me through to 80 hours, when I actually fell asleep at my desk and ended up with keyboard face

Wow, a lot of people not sleeping v much and working way too hard.

If you work smart, you should be able to get everything done in 35-40 hours a week, leaving plenty of time for 8/9 hours sleep a night.

if you can't then outsource or do something else.

    Hi,

It's a rarity to meet someone who can function well on 4 hours sleep/night. I know we have all heard this before, yet 7-8 hours quality sleep is necessary for optimal functioning.

You can function on less, but in the vast majority of cases (humans not robots!), you are not tapping into your true capability.

'Rest up, relax and then load up for the next day' !

    cheers, Patrick

I'm a full-time work-at-home copywriter, and we just had a baby 9 months ago, while my wife works full-time on weekdays. I let her get the sleep, I take care of the baby at night because I can sleep in. I often do, but I hardly ever feel like I'm getting enough sleep. You get used to it though. I've actually found that I am more productive when I am awake now that I get less sleep. It sounds counter-intuitive, but I think it's a matter of being awake so long, I get bored so I just go ahead and finish a couple things here, do a few more things there, and stuff moves along and gets done.

A better question is how much sleep do you yourself need in order to perform at your maximum capabilities?

if you can focus and do good work with 4,5, or 6 hours of sleep then keep it up.

However, if you are still tired and unfocused and you aren't not performing very well, because you are trying to be like the big players who say they never sleep then that is a problem.

Others might be able to sleep 4 hours a night but for me personally to be at my best performance I know I need at least 6 hours.

Figure out what works for you best instead of trying to be like the big players

I'm a cat I usually need 9 hours sleep per day to feel rested. Perhaps this is why it is taking me longer than other people who got successful in a few months, but I don't care, you need to work with the body and mind you are given.

Also reading Tim Ferris, EMyth etc. shows you that you can work smart and not need to do so many hours by having proper systems in place. I challenge anyone doing an 18 hour day to do a postmortem and figure out if it could all be done using only 8 hours of their time, or maybe 2

This is a part of my point. Is the op staying awake because he likes working on his business, or is he staying awake because he heard that is what the big buys to and he is trying to emulate them?

What he might not understand is maybe those big players are saying that to try and show off how much of hard workers they are by saying they never sleep.

Or maybe it's a look how strong and motivated I am kind of manly thing.

Like their way of saying how much can you bench press? Well I bench press 250lbs, and the other one is saying well I bench press 300lbs.

Sleeping 8 hours doesn't make you weak, if your body needs 8 hours of sleep for you to be your most productive then so be it.

And being able to work for 3 days straight without sleep doesn't make you strong or seem impressive. At least in my eyes.

        This.

They may also be saying it to fool others to do it and thus render their potential competitors incompetent. Never take for granted anything that is extravagant, there's many reasons as to why it could be fake or wildly exaggerated.

I run my own business (online) and the minimum I need daily is 6 hours to be productive. I bring in enough money too (as in 5 digits/monthly) and while I could bring a bit more, I believe that with my current daily sleep (6-7 hours) I am balancing a good income with good sleep. In other words, it is possible to have a business and get sleep!

To sleep properly at night requires 2 things:

    1) Balanced/clean diet. 3-4 servings of veggies EVERYDAY along with 3-4 servings of protien. I see SO MANY people who eat too many simple carbs, too little veggies, too little protien, and have HORRIBLE sleep issues. Your body needs protien to sleep at night, and needs veggies to give you energy during the day. So w/out these 2 for a long enough time you can easily become an insomniac.

Other things that screw up sleep are cigarettes, caffiene (obviously) but one of the most significant insomnia triggers is actually sugar. Many people don't realize this. If you persistently take in lots of sugared drinks like soda, tea, orange juice, apple juice, this can also trigger insomnia over a short amount of time. In fact sugar has been shown to trigger insomnia worse than most things I can think of.

Then there are pharmaceuticals like blood pressure medicine, pain killers, and even sleep medicines can trigger rebound insomnia.

    2) Exercise. If you sit around by a computer all day chances are you'll have issues sleeping at night. If you smoke and spend a lot of time on the computer, and drink caffiene, this will make things that much worse.

Being chronically dehydrated can also keep you awake so make sure you always get a lot of water. As far as exercise I try to run at least 30-45 minutes a day on days I don't work out. On days I DO work out I usually won't run. But if I don't exercise at all I do notice its much harder to fall asleep at night. At one point I went like 2 years not exercising, drinkings tons of sugar/caffiene, had a horrible diet, and my insomnia got so bad I was begining to skip nights of sleep.

So you really got to pay attention to your health and I think sleep is one of the primary ways your body guages this. Bad sleep usually correlates to bad health, good sleep with good health. Sure there are exceptions, but for the most part this concept seems to hold true.

ps. here is one simple fact but if diabetes runs in your family sugar is 3xs more likely to cause insomnia for you. There is a great video on youtube called "Sugar - The Bitter Truth" that goes into depth about all the long term effects sugar has on your body, its a very good watch imo for anyone who is addicted to sugar.

If you want to sleep less and have more time to do stuff you should check out polyphasic sleep, check out Steve Pavlina's blog, no need to buy a book about it:

    Polyphasic Sleep

He did it and it works but you have to be religiously committed to the times you actually sleep or it's not going to work. It severely limits your ability to be out and about, really, as you absolutely need that shut eye every four hours or whatever it is...

    Also takes time adjusting.

    Interesting stuff...

There is no way I could concentrate on work if I had 3-4 hours sleep. I have pulled the odd all-nighter but more than one in a row? No way I just can't function properly. Work smart, not hard. No sleep = no productivity. I watched a 'motivational' video where this guy told people that some days you need to stay up 3 days in a row. That is actually counterproductive because you start to hallucinate, your concentration drops, creativity drops, cognition basically goes down the drain, after a certain number of hours without sleep.
