"Internet Marketing is not a real job", Really?

For those who feel discouraged by the naysayers, i urge you not to be. I live in a major City and today saw a publication that advertised a university with short courses and among those courses were a course in Internet Marketing.

I am not sure why people think that the internet is just a "black hole" where we "do facebook" "tweet" all the time. Yes, it is a pleasureable place to be but maybe it's just because ive always got my business/shareholder hat on.

The world's internet usage is still growing rapidly so setting up shop on the internet is a no-brainer.

Don't be discouraged by those who do not believe. Keep the faith and press on.

Regards
RL

Internet Marketing is emerging as a career path in itself!

I wish I could have majored in it in college; but it's true that often what you end up doing is something which didn't even exist 20 years ago.

Actually I think it was around 20 years ago, was definitely there in 95 and that was 17. anyway, you put it if you count the BBS days then we were there lol

I imagine that most of the university courses aren't going to teach you the "real world" skills you'll need to be successful as an internet entrepreneur. Although, I could be wrong.

I don't really know anyone who knows enough about online marketing to even be a naysayer. When I mention to people that I run websites for income, the response is usually, "Wow. How? I have a great idea for a website!"

I think you're right. The local university will probably have some watered down version of online marketing, but I will bet you this much the Ivy Schools will definitely have it covered.

Internet marketing for me is not work, not hard, and heck if it even sounds like a job I'm going in the other direction . Now you know why I don't care much for offline marketing lolol.

      Agreed.

If you are paying your bills on your own, without help from others, it does not matter whether anyone believes that what you do is not a "real job".

If you are not paying your own way, you should get and keep a "real job", at least until you no longer need one.

I get your point. With a post count like yours you made your decision a long time ago and I can only assume that it has paid off. For those who are new and know nothing except that they like what they have seen so far. These people may have a tough time with the critics in their lives. We didn't all just end up here with a screw everyone else's opinion mindset. Some came meek, mild and looking for something more. To them...... People in and around their circle of influence still matter.
      Just saying.

I have just started doing internet marketing on 30th July 2012, don't really share it with my family, friends and colleagues. I have asked for help when I'm doing my blog from my brother and friends, they gave me bad comments, saying that I have started it too late, it will be very hard for me to do it......or even asked me that how many people out there is willing to spend their money again and again to buy the products.....

In the internet marketing workshop, my guru shared few points with us and changed my mind:
    1) Competition = Buyers
    2) A Lot of Buyers = Popular Niche
    3) A Lot of Buyers + Popular Niche = Easy Money

I have zero knowledge about internet marketing, although need to work hard and learn hard, I believe it is a RIGHT choice for me.

    Keep it up!

    Cheers

I'm sorry to hear that Connie.. It's a shame that family & friends can sometimes be like that, but I think it is [unfortunately] all too common.

That's one of the benefits of an online forum.. Plenty of people who understand where you are coming from, and a great place to learn.

Just make sure that you spend at least half of your time implementing, while you are learning, and then keep tweaking until you get the results that you want.

There will be plenty of time to prove your friends and family wrong later.. but, for now, I think you are doing the right thing by keeping them in the dark.

Realize this, when you walk into a room filled with people, roughly only 5 percent of the people in that room are the movers and shakers. This means if you do the opposite of what the 95 percent are doing you are well on your way to Greatness.

None of my family believe in what I am doing, because they are trained to be workers. Our greatest challenge is to break the Spell of Work and really start living.

Indeed - all the "real" jobs I had didn't feed me properly and were sess buckets of stress. IM has paid me considerably more than any other job I had, like big time more, and I am not even a big player, but I am a happy one

I have been telling people that I am in Digital Marketing for years now every time they ask what I do for a living. I used to hate when people asked me what I did for a living because you would get these strange looks like you were making excuses for being between jobs or something. You could see it on their face even though they wouldn't say anything. Only after I started really getting successful and people saw nice clothes, cars, house, etc did it go from strange looks to questions on how they could do what I was doing. LOL. Funny how things change. To all those who may be discouraged remember that persistence and action in your business will change those negative looks and comments around. Then you can create an info product on how to do what you did and sell it to them! LOL

Yeah, I also like to keep it factual. Like if you're building your own business, regardless if that's a software business like selling (digital products). I also think Digital Marketing sounds more professional too. I think there's a difference from being a freelance digital marketer, and being an online business owner.

The difference I think if you're actually building up an asset, whereas in affiliate marketing as we like to call it we're just getting paid for the business we generate for others. I think to be successful it's important to understand what you are. When I realised I was a small business just like all the other small businesses online or offline, I started to incorporate that type of mindset.

My brother mentioned that i dont have a job a few months ago. Funny though, because ive been working from home for over 2 years now; I have held this position LONGER than any other place in the "real world." I also pay my monthly bills and have never asked for help. Hilarious.

To avoid crap and funny looks, though, I just tell people i'm a content writer. People always seem to be impressed when they hear someone's a writer.

I for one am happy that there's people out there that don't get it. One more person to sell to and one less competitor. Those very same naysayers, more likely than not, haven earned someone somewhere an affiliate commission. More than once probably. They just don't know it. They can hate all day, it falls on deaf ears.

As far as University degree in Internet Marketing. Waste of time in my opinion. You only need a degree if you plan to get a job. So if you are planning to do IM for yourself then you'll learn far more from putting into action what you can already learn from all the resources available online than you will in a classroom.

Having worked in software for a lot of years now I definitely see the need for actual degrees in Internet marketing. Many of us learn by doing and that's a good thing. 10 years ago I didn't set out to be an Internet marketer. It just kinda happened. It grew out of interest and now I couldn't stop if I wanted to.

So, why the need for a degree in Internet marketing?

If there's one thing that really gets on my tits it's marketing people screwing with millions of dollars "trying out" this Internet thing. I've heard marketing people make proud statements about achieving this or that online while when the numbers came to light they had only made 200 sales off of their million dollar investment. Now if each of those 200 sales had made in excess of $5000 that would have been nice, but when that number is closer to $100 it's not so nice.

A bit ranty, but I really believe marketing professionals need to be educated about Internet marketing. As it is too many of them are just wasting their clients money.

That, on the other hand is a golden opportunity for those of us who continue to learn Internet marketing in the trenches!

      John,

THANK YOU for making this point! A lot of the misunderstanding and misinformation about IM is rooted in your point.

It drives me absolutely CRAZY when I see Warriors saying things like "I'm going to build a website business." or "Is IM a good business to get into?"

      Good grief!

Clarity: you start a business that has a website.

When fax machines were new, you didn't hear people say "I'm going to start a fax business."

I think people would have a lot more clarity if they realized that the Internet is a MEDIUM just like any other: the phone, radio, TV, Yellow Pages, magazine and newspaper ads, speaking, etc.

I've always had to deal with naysayers since the beginning of my career in internet marketing. Unfortunately, many people who don't know better think IM is nothing but a bunch spammers. What they don't know is that IM has become one of the fastest, most respectable career field out there.

I've had people before tell me "why don't you get a real job" or "why don't you do he's doing and start working in the corporate world".....:-/

Being the kind of person who hates working for a boss, dealing with the typical 9-5 headaches and corporate foolishness, I wanted to become self-employed and have the satisfaction of knowing that all my effort can directly pay off....instead of someone else taking the credit from me. For anyone getting into IM and struggling, I urge them to never give up. Nearly every successful IM'er has struggled at one point and experienced failure, but their persistence is what made them the success that they are today.

    Hey Ryan,

You are right, we have to keep our faith firm and our focus sharp.

Faith is essential, without faith you are not very lkely to take action and the results are bad. If you truly believe that what you're doing is going to pay off in the long run, you are sure to take much more action and the results will be vastly different.

When you get the results, it reinforces your faith and the cycle goes on.

    So, BELIEVE, it is possible!

yes i too saw Internet marketing course at a Uni. I do not think it would be beneficial beyond a very basic stage but there you go. Maybe 10 years time there will be a degree in Int. Marketing.

Indeed, I think people are also forgetting that most institutions of higher learning program people for jobs.

Internet Marketing on Google by SEO is getting harder everyday. Since the penguin and panda it is getting really tough to survive in this industry.

As long as you are making money anything can be a "real job".

Yeah, sure. How is internet marketing not working 9-5 or more?

Yes these statements are making rounds after the recent Google Updates but i too firmly believe that Internet Marketing is something that rises each day as a new website is launched as no website can be among rankings without marketing them through proper fair techniques.
    So long live Internet Marketing.

  • What I want to know is: Who are these professors who are teaching these courses in Internet marketing? Where did they get their qualifications on the subject? How much money do they make each month from Internet marketing?

I would be willing to bet that (for the most part) they are classically educated marketing people who told their college "hey, we can offer an Internet marketing degree and suck in tons of new students". *They probably are marketing people after all!*

Maybe I am wrong (and incredibly skeptical of most traditional teachers/professors abilities anyway) but I believe that the best education you can get in IM is by doing it and learning from others. Particularly those here on Warrior Forum.

I would save my money and learn from the people who are doing it. The piece of paper means nothing in our business.

*The old adage applies: "Those who can't, teach. Those who can, do.". Maybe that needs to be updated for IM to include: "Those who are doing, create WSO's or programs to teach others."

Internet Marketing is NOT a real job. That's just the fact.

    It's a business.

Well, humans, in general, will always have different point of views. I think that's how the world was designed. We were gifted with the ability to rationalize.

Content Writing 360° listens to feedbacks, criticisms, comments, and suggestions. Keeping our ears open to such does not guarantee that we automatically do what they say. We rationalize. We do what we got to do.

Internet Marketing is a JOB. That's correct. Where people go wrong is when they call it a business. It's not a business.

A business needs many things. Marketing is just one of them. Internet marketing is just one portion of marketing as a whole.

Internet Marketing is not a job. But you can get a job or career in Internet Marketing.

With a job you have an employer. Your employer pays benefits and deducts taxes giving you a NET paycheck.

When people talk about Internet Marketing as being self-employed or running their own company, then it is not a job. You are taking in gross revenues and must pay your expenses and taxes from these revenues.

That is not to say it isn't hard work or doesn't pay well.

Curious, what do they teach exactly in an internet marketing university course? I'm curious as to if they teach everything available or focus on social media promotion and go an advertising kind of route. I've never heard of IM being an actual credited course.
