If you had the domain name romneyryan.com what would you do with it? The domain is currently pointed to Mitt's actual campaign site

Yep... I think that sums it up nicely.

I do not sell domains and things like that, but I think that is called cyber squatting.

Here's more information on that... Cyber Squatting

Hmmm. Maybe. I'm not sure that would apply to a site about politics, though. It would be interesting to hear from Dave or one of the other people here who are familiar with the law on this sort of thing.

That is a great point Paul. Did not think of it that way. In all honesty though, I do not do anything in the domain field so I am very uneducated in this particular field.

Notice the Wikipedia entry mentioning, though, of profiting from the goodwill of a
trademark of someone or something. Unless the politicians in question can show
they have established trademark rights to their respective names, the OP might -
to an extent - be able to make money off of that domain name still.

Generally politicians or political figures are fair game, although they can create or
establish trademark rights like Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin (?) are. Not that it's
necessarily going to stop Romney or Ryan from pursuing this matter should one or
both of them see fit, though.

Whatever you decide, OP, just be ready to deal with it. Oh, and don't sell that to
either one of them directly given that there is a law on cyberpiracy protection of
        individuals.

        Good luck.

Someone went the "windfall" route (see my earlier post) with a predictable result. Read a story of a $250,000 price at one point.

The domain did not sell at auction. Now, with the convention over, and initial buzz about the domain gone, it may be becoming less valuable. Even if Romney wins the Presidency, IMHO who the VP is for a domain is more valuable before the election and not after, when the VP quickly slips into obscurity.

Reminds me of the time a couple of years ago that a certain unlikely Scottish singer's video went viral.

The owner of SusanBoyle.com (who was also named Susan Boyle) put her domain up for auction. We'll never know how much she would have taken finally but I offered $23,000 and was turned down. The geniuses at Sedo were telling her to hold out for a lot more -- she told me that in email.

She still has the domain. The record company went with SusanBoyleMusic.com.

It's not enough to get lucky -- you have to know how to play your cards or you get nothing.

This is incorrect. There are several other circumstances under which you can very easily get into trouble.

And yet another good reason (as if one were needed) of why people shouldn't ask for, offer or rely on legal advice from a forum.

My thoughts exactly. Any strategy that takes more than a couple of months would be a wasted opportunity.

After the second Tuesday in November, the domain will likely be worthless.

I'd probably try to flip it to the highest bidder, which could be the Romney campaign or some car dealer in the middle of nowhere (Romney Ryan Ford?).

    1. You could try to sell it.
    2. Probably the best chance of not getting a letter from Mitt or Paul's campaign office/attorney would be to make it a glowing praise site or fan club site. Then you might be allowed to profit from using their names as public figures. Adsense, banner ads, merchandise, etc.

Well, I cashparked it for about 12 hours and had over 1200 visitors and about $13 in revenue. I just followed JayVance's advice and made it a joke site about Mitt's tax returns. I applied to google adsense but it said it can take up to a week to process my application, so until then I might go back to cashparking and just take the $25-$30/day I was on pace for. This is all new to me and I have no idea what I'm doing. Also thank you Randall Magwood for telling me about flippa.

I think you would probably be better off selling an eBook maybe something along the lines of Mitt Romney's Hidden Tax Returns. I have a friend that is a retired CPA, and he is one of the tightest folks you will ever meet. He is 66 years old and he coughed up $600 cash plus hotel and travel expense to attend a course on how Obama's birth certificate is fake. The political niche can be very lucrative if you can dish out the red meat that your viewing audience wants.

Keep in mind you have a very limited shelf life with something like this. If Romney looses it is dead in November if he wins you have the next 4-8 years to make money with it, but your peak traffic is always going to be at election time. If you don't want to take the time to develop it I'd just sell it for some quick cash now as it is likely never going to be worth more than it is worth right now.

Thats funny, I was thinking why not contact Ron Paul and ask if he'd buy it? The guy already dominates youtube/google for terms you'd never expect and his marketing skills are rather admirable imo.

Not trying to talk politics just trying to think outside the box. Romney is focused on big media networks, Ron Paul is the one focused on the internet (from what I've seen it would just be worth more to Ron Paul - he would have a ball tearing Romney a new asshole using Romneys own search terms lol - he's already done this on youtube just go look).

Good to know I did not realize that.

But now that I think about it that makes things so much more ironic. That means there are A LOT and I mean A TON of Ron Paul supporters online then... which makes me wonder why he seems to be doing so bad in the polls.

I know we can't talk politics here but that really makes me consider how corrupt mass media actually is. I mean the guy is all over the internet but every major media source seems to ignore him like he doesn't exist.

America really needs to get its crap together after this November election. I'll stop talking about politics now sry folks.

    Someone made national news:

'romneyryan.com' mocks Mitt on tax returns - POLITICO.com

But you only made $13? As you said, you don't know what you are doing. I have a feeling quite a few marketers are crying about this.

How difficult is it to put up affiliate links for Amazon, CafePress, etc.? Or to do simple searches for Romney / political products with "affiliate" on the page (hint: so you can sign up for the affiliate program)?

Considering people most likely to visit the domain are Romney supporters, why on earth would you put up mocking content and expect anyone to click some generic ad link?

You need to offer the domain for sale ASAP. As others have said, you're blowing an opportunity. Possibly a once in a lifetime opportunity.

I see this a lot. Someone has a domain name with high, but short-lived value, and tries to sell it for a windfall (like the $150,000 demand for kerryedwards) - without making any effort to monetize a website on the domain. Since the price is unrealistic it doesn't sell. Two years later the domain is not re-registered with a net loss of domain registration fees.

According to a new story on Politico 70 Pres/VP domain name combinations were bought 3 years ago. Assuming all were kept that is an investment of $1750. Some were probably not re-registered this year as it became clear someone was not going to be the Prez or VP selection.

Top offer has been $3k, which was not accepted.

Someone was probably sweating over the media reports last month that General Petraeus was being considered for VP.

Possible domains for 2016 are going fast ...

My stats page says 28,606 for August 14th, but I anticipate it will be slightly higher for yesterday and today since I started getting some media attention

I don't understand why you are ignoring everyone. I wish I had your site, I would have monetized the hell out of it.

And P.S. to the guy who said porn isn't funny... you obviously haven't watched enough porn to make that assumption

Hopefully you won't start getting attention from those guys themselves . Good luck!

The mistake is linking it. You've made an association to leverage from his name. In the eyes of the law you would be "passing off" if it was taken to that extreme.

Additionally your sales method (assuming you go onto sell) shouldn't promote it as being association with this person neither in any way shape or form. This includes possible suggestions for use.

Needless to say, you'd fare better editing out the domain in your OP and thread title too.

  • What value are your creating with that domain other then trying to extort money from them. If you where the celebrity and someone did that to you how would you feel and what value did they create?

You could point it to CafePress (sign up as an affiliate first.) Just point it to items which people are already selling for that campaign (t-shirts, mugs, etc.) Or design your own items there and set up your own "gift shop." (But maybe stay away from using any of their official campaign materials if you're worried about legal issues.)

This is what I'd do. Get a CafePress or Zazzle store going and make serious $$$. Just be careful not to use any copyrighted imagery.

To be fair, you do not need to sell it, do a joint venture with some of the best IM's on here. I would make that site into a pro romley site and talk about how they can support him etc etc.

It seem like only one gag but it's quite a good one. They are putting it to good use. I bet before the next election, any pair that is thinking of teaming up will buy their domain.

I've spent the last 59 months building 412 MFA sites. Each site averages 8 cents per day...I said average, some make up to 17 cents per day, PASSIVE INCOME! This income allows me to live comfortably and buy ANY flavor Jolly Rancher or Skittles I desire. Don't give in to fear, it CAN be done!
