Facebook Fan Page Likes or/vs Email list buildling question

I was wondering what you guys thought about this. I wanted to create a fan page for my niche and after a while market my own products and ebooks to them. I could also do the same with an email building list, but I want to give 100% of my effort to one thing. What do you guys recommend?

It will depend on the product(s) you are wanting to sell.

Facebook users are fairly resistant to advertising.

You own your email list when you have created it. This allows you to repeatedly contact these people. It can take more than one contact to turn people into a buyer. Especially for big ticket items.

An email list is better in most markets but you will need to test your particular market.

      +1

The monetary value of an email list is higher in most product niches than Facebook fans. That being said, it costs nothing to use both!

    Hi him77,

If the text highlighted in red is what bothers you, I think the answer is simple. Just select one of your two options and you can sleep tight tonight.

Seriously, why don't you split-test? We can only so much but recommend this and that based on what we read, heard, or tried. Nothing can be better than testing what you have in mind.

I would say definitely go with email marketing

    1. The email list is yours to keep forever
    2. People are more open to being marketed to on email (as opposed to facebook)
    3. The success of your email marketing will not be in the hands of an external factor like facebook. Just imagine what happens if facebook shuts down you page because of too much marketing!

Furthermore, if you use the squeeze page model, you can even pick up a few sales here and there with OTOs, which I think is a lot less feasible on the facebook platform.

what I may do is get traffic to the facebook page, build trust, and then get them to sign up for the email list. At the same time I will be using some email list building methods I learned from some wso to build an email list. Guess I'll just use both...Just need to make a system that works. Thansk for the help guys!

I should be rolling in a few days so you caught me at a good time with your thread.

For most of my sites I'm working with Both. you want to cover everything.
I still haven't gotten any stats for paying customers coming off the facebook, but I'm making sure all social sites are covered.

I did my list and squeeze page first so that I can capture folks before the site opens and will work on the fanpage later.

You answered your question for yourself.. However it was taught in the 90's and still today. The money is in the list. Me personally I would concentrate on the list, and add some time to build your facebook page. The gurus say your list is worth 1 dollar a month for every email in it. I have not read anything about how much your facebook fans are worth.

I'm with you on that one Mike. I have been asking all warriors who are pulling in the big bucks off the facebook to step forward lol. Don't get me wrong I'm covering the facebook to, but it would be nice to hear some stats from someone. Worst come worst I will find out on my own within the next few weeks.

Emailing marketing is definitely the direct route to high profits. Fanpages may sound enticing at first glance (and don't get me wrong they can be) but they can also be much more difficult and challenging than you may expect with little to no return on time/money invested(take a look at GM for example). Email marketing on the other hand is a simple and right to the point method, not mention it's time tested and it "just works"

Email List - There isn't one sound reason to ever go against full ownership and creative control

I am for email list as well because ... facebook will change and tweak its algoriths and your wall posts may not be seen by all of the people who liked your page.

I'd use email 90% of the time & 10% social stuff. In the emails I'd include calls to actions e.g. like my fan page, share this email with a friend, post it on your wall, follow me on twitter, retweet this etc,

Short answer: Use likes to build your email list.

If that doesn't make sense to you, I would encourage you to buy a good facebook marketing course, to fully understand why it is so important to use facebook.

    Two things my friend.
FanPage and list of members. Owner (Facebook).
    Email List. Owner (YOU).

Always try to find the contacts of your facebook page and put them in your funnel!! Exist many ways to do that!

    I use both methods.
Email optin in the squeeze page.
It is important to capture your leads.

    Fangate to release further bonuses..
Can create viral effect to your site.
Do note Facebook traffic is responsive
    But not good buyer traffic.

    I'd build a mailing list!

A mailing list can be one of the best assets for your business! Can't be taken from you either

I definitely choose email building. Email list is a very essential asset for every internet marketer, especially when it is targeted. almost every internet marketer will want to cover every social network while building a list. usually they focus on one social network that have many member, right now I am focus on Tumblr. You can do that too, doing both is also an options. but of course set a priority and I think building a list is more important than a fan page. how do you get fans when you don't have product or mailing news.

Email list. Use the fanpage as a backup option. Facebook could decide one day they don't like what you're doing and shut down your whole operation. Never let your business ride solely on the back of another; especially one like Facebook that changes like the weather.

Your email list should be the foundation of your business. Build an email list. Why would you build a list on only Facebook when it is a constantly changing platform that could completely disappear.

I never like other companies determining whether I will be a success or not. I do almost everything in house even my autoresponders are on a dedicated server. My server.

I don't do SEO for the same reasons. One change in the search engines and you could be out of business. Build your business on a solid foundation and that foundation is email marketing.

Realize that my answer is based on your comment of 100% attention to one tactic.

    Best regards,

      Two things...

      1. Yes you can build a list with Facebook fans but the way Facebook edge rank works makes it harder to always reach 100% of your "list" or fans. And promoting to them isn't quite the same as email.

BUT, I will say that there are a lot of benefits to creating a fan page on Facebook if you do your niche research right. Not all niches work well on facebook etc...

      2. With email marketing you are almost guaranteed to reach the entire list. But there are a lot of tricks to getting open rates higher and making it work. Either way, email list is essential and having a fan page with engagement can be huge!

You might want to invest in both with an emphasis on testing and building your traditional email list.
