Authority sites........how do they start.

We all know many many authority sites in every possible market. How do they come about?

Do they start off small and build on it and become an authority in their chosen market, or do they work constantly offline for months on end, to start off huge and do it that way.

I am just curious as to how it all happens.

If you publish good content that draws traffic consistently, then you can get established as an authority. people go to these sites, because of the content and information an authority site contains. WebMD is a huge example of a site that has thousands of pages filled with content that people find useful.

It also helps if you can get other people contributing good content as well. Not only will you find lots of experts with different points of view, but everyone is proud of their own content and will show it to other people. That brings more traffic to your site.

Lots and lots of backlinks is one of the things that make a site an authority site. The other is great original content.

I would consider several of my tech review sites to be authority sites. They all started out as small niche sites. Why are they authority sites now?
    • because they contain information from a subject-matter expert (me)
    • their content is original and useful
    • they are easily navigable
    • other major websites reference them on a fairly regular basis
    • they look professional
    • they are not spammy EMDs
Master the 6 points above and you have yourself an authority site (or something close to it)

I like Wolfmmiii last point about spammy EMD's. For some reason the gurus seem to be still teaching us that we need a bunch of exact match domains to rank. I do have som EMD's in my collection, but not of the type "bestbluewidgetexas.com" for example.

Authority sites start with one post and build the site brick by brick. They build up authority over years with consistency and value. They bring in a audience and always overdeliver to keep their audience coming back for more. They build a list of subscribers and continue to offer value. They use social media as a way to influence the masses with the help of their raving fans.

I think the best trick is to get expert guest posters fast and this creates a snowball effect. They share thier work with their circle of friends and so on, plus they will build links to their posts also.

That's good advice above about using guest posters but you need quality people with a good following for that to work. That means you need to have a fair amount of excellent quality material to attract your own audience and followers first.

Then you'll be ready for the type of guest blogger that will help you grow.

No one wants to be the first at the party, especially if there's no atmosphere. You need to create that first.

With authority sites I generally find that starting small and building big is the best approach. For content on the site I will start with 2-3 keywords and build upon that each month adding another keyword or two and high quality content that targets those keywords. I also will write 25 - 50 extra articles to be published elsewhere on the internet for link backs to my authority site. Before I know it people are valuing my site and clicking on advertisements and I'm making money!

      Excellent advice!

Authority sites don't become so overnight. They take time, effort, commitment and a lot of really first rate content that is fresh, up-to-date and of interest to visitors.

Build such a site and you won't have to look back.

Simple. Other established sites VOUCH for the new authority site's credibility by linking to it. Sounds like a hard process? Think again. You can REVERSE ENGINEER your competition (yes, even "authority" sites) by looking at their content strategy and coming up with your own unique "branded" version. As for backlinks, that's easier to do--just copy part of their linking pattern. However, there is a right and wrong way to do it see for example Reverse Engineering Your Competitors Success the Right Way

From an SEO point of view the better approach would be to start out small and then build your way up. Adding content on a regular basis is a great way to better your rankings in the SERPs.

Well, in the long-run the two approaches would kind of even out, but starting out small and then adding content regularly and building backlinks every day is a good thing in SEO.

As per your question: I think there are both types of people, both the ones that start off local and build in time and the ones that wait until the site has a lot of depth before they launch it.
