You cant manage what you dont measure

Hi everyone,
It's been a while since I posted here, as I've been involved in various projects and coaching programs, but I have a few spare minutes today and wanted to post this up.

I wanted to share something that I've learned recently that has brought about massive clarity, change and increased profits to my business - and that is tracking EVERYTHING.

In the past I would wake up, check emails, see that I've had 3 sales overnight, made $450, do a quick fist pump, celebrate, make a coffee then go about my day hoping that it might happen again the following day.

I had no idea...
  • where the sales originated from
  • what the referring keyword was
  • what medium brought the buyer to my site (email, article, youtube video etc)
Whilst its great making money online, unless you're actively tracking your efforts, there's no real way to know exactly what you're doing is working. It's pointless blasting links all over the place "hoping" something might work. You need to know.

The biggest lesson I've learnt is this. (And I quote James Schramko)

FIND WHAT WORKS, AND DO MORE OF IT.

If you made a sale today, or yesterday or the day before - find out how it happened. This is CRITICAL.

You should know exactly where the sale originated from, which medium brought them to your site, and which link/button they purchased from. (This also includes tracking your email links within your autoresponder as well)

To give you an example, I'm now tracking every single link that I push out on the first tier of my backlinking/traffic building efforts. This way, I know for certain, what works, and where I need to focus my time.

Okay so that's great but how?????

The answer lies in utilizing two FREE tools.

1. Google Analytics
2. Google's URL Builder

Using these two tools combined, you can track every single link profile you place on the web. Guess what? This means no more guesswork with what SEO service or link building package works - this means you SAVE money. Have you ever paid someone $97 to build links to your site then wondered a month later if it worked? Well now you will know for certain - because you can track and measure it.

To view whats going on once you have this in place you go to Google Analytics > Traffic > Sources > Campaigns ...then you can see exactly how your site/backlinks/offsite optimization strategies are performing.

Any questions, feel free to ask

Good post - you can't improve what you can't measure. That's the basis of good old-fashioned (Deming) process improvement

Great advice for all - Tracking is so very critical.

You can also setup goals within GA, which tracks when a conversion happens plus it tells you specifically what medium and campaign the buyer came from.

The term I use for people that aren't tracking their online business is 'blind marketers' - quite apt don't you think?

      Absolutely!

Once you know where your buyers are, then you simply ramp up your efforts in that space.

As a former Engineer, I love to track, measure and test
      whenever practical.

Google Analytics, Google URL Builder and Google Content
Experiments are free tools that help you to discover what
works so you can do more of it.

I also use a lead source script to track which traffic sources
provide the best quality list subscribers.

It's a shame that so many Internet Marketers don't test
and track their processes - especially when it's easy to
do and gets you more results with less effort.

      Dedicated to mutual success,

      Shaun
