Do you have a day job too or is IM the ONLY source of income for you?

Just wondering how many people just do IM as their job and don't have regular 9 to 5. It would give me hope that it is actually possible!

    I've never had a "day job". Or, if you like, this is my "day job", and I work as hard as anyone who works for an employer.

    But at least it's my business I'm building up, I can start work late in the morning/afternoon and work late at night if I want to, and I don't have to travel anywhere to "go to work".
    And a fair proportion of it is fun, too.

        Sorry, CW - I've only just noticed your question, today. I've been very lucky (and I'm not saying this to be modest: it's the "secret ingredient" that nobody's very comfortable talking about because people like to believe that "you make your own luck" - that's sometimes true, but there's typically some pretty random luck involved in IM success as well!).

        When I started my affiliate marketing business I had no idea what I was doing and earned nothing to speak of for about 4 months, but within another couple of months of that I was making what I considered a full-time living (about $3,000-$3,5000 per month), and within another year and a half I was earning a little more than either my doctor or my lawyer (both friends, so I know), and although I don't give figures any more, my monthly income's continued to grow steadily since then. So, I think there's probably nobody who was in my year at either high school or university who earns more than I do. But bear in mind I've been very lucky as well as starting out in this business with existing writing skills that proved really valuable.

          It only took you ~4 months to earn that much? Damn I want to be that lucky. I would just like to congratulate you on your success. You must be very happy!

    If you are just starting out I would imagine having a day job would be far more beneficial. Having cash to invest in your business from the beginning is essential. Okay, it's not essential, but it is definitely a much better situation than having no cash at all.

      I agree, having money to invest is definitely a larger advantage then trying to start with nothing.

      I still have a day job and like to supplement my income with Internet Marketing. It sort of becomes an adiction for me, to explore all method of MMO avenues and see what works best!

    I haven't had a day job for over a year now and I must say that I love it!

    Although I am not quite at the point of "living the dream" financially, I am gaining many perks such like the ones Alexa mentioned above. Being able to work when you want, how you want, where you want is an incredible feeling in itself.

    It is also so much fun. I love statistics and being creative... IM does it all for me! All a day job provides is a pay check every month and a way to make ends meet.

    Fortunately I'm young, and don't have many financial liabilities so being a full time IMer fits in perfectly with my life. I've still got a fair old way to go though, but I'm getting there.

    I am at work right now. I am a Accounts Receivable coordinator for a Heating and cooling company. What is nice is that there is quite a bit of downtime. I usually get to write 1-2 articles a day for my blog. I am just really starting out even though I have another site I have had for two years but haven't done much with. I hope to be able to start making decent enough money to quit my job in 1-2 years. That's just a dream. But it will take hard work.

    Had a day job for the first few years I was doing IM then finally started making enough to quit it. Probably one of the best days of my life. It was an easy job but I hated it.

    Now after 4 years of working at home, online for myself I decided to get a part time job in the evenings just to get out of the house and meet people more. Also seems to keep me more focused when I am online. I enjoy working on my business in the mornings and also enjoy the real life interaction and fulfillment that I get from my part time job. I'm sure if I ever get married or start doing more traveling I'll probably just go back to full time IM but for now I like it like this, keeps me sane.

    I have a day job, but been doing article writing for the past 5 years or so as well. Having a day job can be more reliable, but fun and flexibility of time can be obtained if I can only work on my article writing alone. I am looking forward to quit my day job when possible. Hope everything works for me and flows smoothly.

    Quit my full time job in November 2011 (Mechanical Engineer) to be a full time stay-at-home-dad and part time IM. Certainly not equalling my engineer paycheck (yet!) but getting closer all the time. I hated office politics and bs, but I love IM.

    Come up with a minimum salary that you need to make in order to leave (may not be as much as you are making now). Work towards that number then quit. But first, search your soul and make sure you have the drive and self-discipline to work on your own building your own business. I recommend reading Robert Kiyosaki's Before You Quit Your Job and the book Why Aren't You Your Own Boss by Edwards/Economy. Both were helpful to me.

    I've had a day job for as long as I've been in IM (7 years), even though I've been making enough to leave my job.

    Part of it is security for me. I have 3 little kids and I want to provide a secure future for them. I guess I kinda think that I'd worry to much about being vulnerable that it would stress me out. My dad is a small business owner and he had some VERY stressful years where he went through long periods of time of being unable to sleep because of the worry.

    Part of it is because of the "total compensation" I'd be walking away from if I left. I have a relatively low stress job that's close to home. I make about $100K when you add in salary, bonus, perks, and health care benefits. Plus I like my job and it's close to my house (10 minutes away).

    Finally, I'm not totally convinced I would accomplish much with my newfound time to be honest. Right now, I outsource EVERYTHING in my business out of necessity (lack of time). If I lost my day-job income, I'm positive that I'd get more stingy with the dollars I took in and probably would just end up doing things that I used to outsource.

    Plus, I am not as enamored with the WAH lifestyle as others.

      Yes, I can completely relate to what you are saying. I have 2 kids and my job pays very well with full benefits. It is complex though - very stressful because of the position I'm in, but it is also flexible and I have a lot of say because of my position. Some people would think I'm crazy to want to leave, but I have wanted to work on my own for the longest time. No matter what, I still have to deal with corporate BS and it just isn't me. I hate having meetings just to talk about other meetings we are going to have. They just love to have their meetings - employee meeting, sales meeting, operations meeting, officer meeting - and it goes on. I want out but it is still a scary thought. My parents also owned small businesses and it was a constant struggle, so that plays on my mind too. I guess I'm just going to see where I'm at in IM in a year and then make a decision.

    Having a job is a great way to learn discipline and save money to start a business. I used to deliver pizzas (about the least disciplined job you can get however)

    My businesses both offline and online are my job. No matter what people tell you no matter how much "automated" money you make, if you're dealing with customers, even if you don't perform the services and you just manage your staff and do some QA, if you're dealing with customers, there will ALWAYS be problems, there will always be things to deal with. From the outside, internet marketing and other businesses might seem like you can kick back on the couch and let money roll in, but the sad truth is, you may have to put in 12 hour days, almost 7 days a week. Is it worth it? YES, there's still something liberating about living off the sweat of your brow.

    Any form of IM takes a lot of work, and with enough dedication, YES you can replace your job =)

    If you want to make $40,000 per year, you have to make $770 per week, if you want to make $770 per week you have to make $110 per day.

    Devise a way to make 1 $110 sale per day, or 2 $55 sales, even 11 $10 sales.

    Hey,

    been working at home since January, 2012.

    It's definitely possible though may I suggest finding a great mentor or use ONE system from a teacher you trust based on recommendations and research, and follow through all the way with it.

    Ask them as many questions as you can, ask for help, study and practice a lot and become as professional in your approach. This is a process and takes some time.

    As an artist prior to my entrepreneurial adventures, personally it took me quite some time also to differentiate my desire and appreciation for freedom and creativity (purpose and play).

    Both mean a lot to me as they probably do for most people. It's possible to have both in abundance as an entrepreneurial artist (I'm working on this still) but to be free enough to work from home is a beautiful thing...

    It may not be the funnest system you choose to do for a living, but it's going to be better than serving another company under poor leadership. I guarantee it. So, just do your homework and commit utterly and with all your being. Then it will happen for you.

    I have a day job but my goal is to work my last month there June 2013. I do I.M work on lunch breaks and when I get home from work. I'm building a solid business from I.M but I will use some of the revenue from that to invest in other financial endeavors such as real estate. Some people want to do I.M full time, and others want it part time for a little residual income.

    I quit my job a couple weeks ago....finally! I have done well since I now have more time to do the things I need to make money online. It all started with a week vacation...hahahahahahaha their mistake..

      Day job? Heavens no. I spend about 1/3rd of my day on home projects (yardwork, buying appliances, lining up contractors to do work at our house) and the other 2/3rds running my Amazon, ecommerce and blogging businesses along with some merchandising and mystery shopping.

      I'm getting too old to put in months of effort on a project in hopes of a big payoff, so now I stick to things that I know will bring in cash right away.

    I'm still holding on to my day job. IM used to be a side income for me although now I'm seriously considering to make it as a full time online marketer. Having a job is beneficial in term of I am able to invest more into my business. Nonetheless, time management is very crucial here. In the beginning, my performance at the office had suddenly declined and many were wondering about it. That's when I learned to outsource some of the tasks that I have to do and manage my time better.

    But IM is my second job,my first job is to develop site.
    Actually I am a zend certified php engineer.

    I am satisfied by my income so for that I have no confusion about my earning line.

      So far, I have been working on my website and writing my free ebook. I have my Aweber all setup but just need to finish the ebook. Once I do that, then I will start promoting my site. Since I came on this forum, I would just toy with the idea of actually doing something online. I just recently decided to take action and made a plan: Start with one blog and if it does well, do a second (I already have the domain and idea of the other blog) THEN if I do really well at the 2 blogs (and once I have built a good relationship with them), direct those lists to my third site (which is not in existence) and that will show them how I make money from blogging. The 2 blogs have nothing to do with making money online, BUT the potential subscribers are people who could benefit from working from home. THEN if all of that goes well, I plan to write a book on how I did all of that and market it to newbie's on here like myself. lol I know I'm a big dreamer....I just like to plan for the future and I don't like the idea of limiting myself to one blog. Just like in a "normal" career, you want to see a path where you can grow and develop, so I just want the same if I go the IM route. I have this whole plan written in a journal and I look at it every once in awhile - keeps me motivated!

        No day job for me. I quit working for the man a few years back and started IM immediately after. Been doing this full time since then. The freedom to structure my life the way I want can never come from working for someone else. So am planning to do this 'ad infinitum'.

THEN if all of that goes well, I plan to write a book on how I did all of that and market it to newbie's on here like myself. lol I know I'm a big dreamer....I just like to plan for the future and I don't like the idea of limiting myself to one blog. Just like in a "normal" career, you want to see a path where you can grow and develop, so I just want the same if I go the IM route. I have this whole plan written in a journal and I look at it every once in awhile - keeps me motivated!
        Sounds like a plan. Go ahead and do more than one blog and if you have time start now sometimes search engines and all take time. I like the idea of focus, but at the sometimes people are tricky, they go for the things we least expect. Selling can be unpredictable that's why so many companies try to get it down to an art, some fail some kick butt. So, its good to put it out there test and see what the people decide.

    In the beginning I had a regular job but the more I got involved into blogging, article submissions, SEO etc. somehow IM dominated more and more of my time. So if you're earning from IM more than your regular job, eventually, you would have to leave your regular job to focus on IM.

    Hi Madelyndon,

    I don't have a job, and haven't for more than two years now, but I don't limit myself strictly to online income either. I look for opportunities ('projects') both on and offline to pursue, some of which take a few months to get a big 'payday'.

    This suits me and my personality because I don't have anyone else to consider, love a challenge, and get bored easily with the mundane.

    So, I would say pick something to suit both your personality and situation, and don't necessarily limit yourself to online-only when it comes to looking for opportunities.

    Hubby has the regular day job, in the same field as our online biz. I do all the online biz things with the exception of mixing the paint for our kits, he does that. I consider my part of this venture to be a part time job, maybe 3-4 hours a day 4-5 days a week. The goal is to have this online biz be the sole earner for us in maybe 3 yrs.

    I have been working from home for 7 years now, 3 years of that has been IM, the rest of the years doing another type of work from home business that didn't involve a computer.

    I have long gone past the point of being employable! Not because I am lazy, but because it is difficult for me to do something I don't believe in, or do something that provides a set monthly wage. I am not good at taking orders either

    I am a student. Internet Marketing is the only source of income for me. Although I have attempted to be employed part time in the past, I decided that it was not worth pursuing. Too little returns for far too much time. Internet Marketing can provide a massive income, albeit with many difficulties along the way.

      Still working full time for the slave traders.

      My boss is cool, my work is cool, I get paid a fair bit with all the benefits (cheap vending machine..) and that is probably one reason why I have not needed to switch my behind into gear.

      I started earning online consistently a few months back. Wont give up the JOB until I know I can sustain 6k+ per month after tax and in my pocket. I have a young family so taking a risk is not something that is fair on them.

    I'm got a day job too but I am targeting to quit within the next 2-3 years. The job is alright now. Not too stressful and able to pay the bills. I get to go home punctually most of the time so I got some spare time to work on my online stuffs, unlike some of my senior colleagues who worked really long hours, including weekends!

    It is the only thing I do. Altho I was forced into it being my only source of income. I got in a car accident and had to learn how to earn money while I was laid up from neck surgery. I ended up getting laid off because of budget cuts (I worked in a school). Now I will never go back to a job where I work on someone else's terms again. I can't go thru it again.
