Can You Still Have Success With Article Marketing?

I used to do quite a lot of article marketing when I launched a new site and it was a good way to get early traffic while working on building search rankings.

Article marketing also used to be a quick and relatively easy way to get started and make fast sales but there have been a lot of changes during the past couple of years.

Interested to hear people's thoughts on how article marketing is working now?

Do you still use it much, is it still worth your time, do your articles still get good traffic, would you still recommend it?

Some of the major article sites have had a big drop in traffic since a couple of years ago. One good article used to be able to drive hundreds of visitors quite easily but views seem to be a lot lower now?

        That's for sure.

That's a good thing for article marketers, not a bad thing.

All those "Panda updates" of 2011 have nearly destroyed the SEO potential and benefits of article directories, which has helped us by making it easier for us to use article directories for their intended purpose without the risk that our potential customer traffic will find those articles via Google.

For all the reasons explained in this post, no article marketer wants their potential customers going to an article directory rather than to their own website.

And the "Penguin update" has helped us further, by effectively removing from the SERP's most of the websites belonging to those "marketers" who don't understand the difference between content syndication and mass article directory submission.

Views in article directories are much lower, yes.

That's a good thing for us article marketers.

(Not quite so good for the directories, of course, because naturally they make their living from all the traffic we lose, the people who never reach our own sites but click on the AdSense in the directory).

Potential customers aren't seeing those copies nearly so much, now, fortunately for us. It's easier for us to get the customers at our own sites, and a higher proportion of the viewers in article directories are the people for whom article directories exist: potential publishers of our articles.

Personally I don't like the term "article marketing" because experience has taught me that most people have preconceived notions on what that is (and it's usually wrong). I prefer the term "content marketing" because you write an article that's, let's say, 1,500 words titled: "10 Ways To Attract The Woman Of Your Dreams".

You can now take each of those "10 Ways" and write ten more detailed articles 500 words or so and use those. Then you convert those 10 Ways Into several videos. You're not limited by the written word here.

Content marketing is a long-term marketing strategy that is extremely effective if you know how to distribute your content; this includes finding content partners. I've seen people do this in a lot of ways. Some people become avid bloggers and are able to attract readership by syndicating their content.

Others use press releases, RSS feeds, mixed in with SEO strategies, along with recruiting their affiliates to become content partners. So yes, you can still have success by marketing your content if you're willing to put in the work. Regarding press releases, I have a standing rule of submitting at least one per quarter per product / website / etc. depending on the business model. Though sometimes once or twice a month is better. Again, it depends on many factors.

Remember, writing an article and submitting to several article directories is NOT article marketing. It's only a very small aspect of it.

Here's another example: another Warrior grabs a copy of The Writer's Market every single year (it's updated yearly) and submits her content to various publishers, ranging from Glamour magazine to some very well-known blogs. She's been doing this for years and now pulls in hundreds of thousands of visitors to her various websites. And guess what? She's now developed relationships with those publishers and editors who know that she puts out quality stuff that people want to read.

It wasn't easy and it was a lot of hard work, but it has paid off for her because she viewed her content within the confines of a real business, not simply outsourcing some articles and then submitting them in a few places and hoping for the traffic to show up.

Just bear in mind that was never the original intention of legitimate article directory websites. The original intent (and still is today) is for webmasters and other publishers to grab your article and use it on their website. THAT function is still working well today.

Yes Article Marketing still works but not alone, it's the same when you try to rank your website you need backlinks to push your articles up.
