List Building - Where to Start?

I used to run a small SEO firm and have a list of about 300 clients, but with such a small list it's not worth the mass marketing it seems.

Where do you start building lists? I was thinking of seting up some EMD's for specific niches I want to market and try to have an pop-up that gets their email before they can continue?

I have Aweber setup, with double-opt in currently.

Any tips would be great.

depends what niche you are in

building your list from SEO traffic can take a long time

if you want to build your list fast in the IM niche then solo ads are cool

while you build your list up with solo ads you can be building traffic using other traffic sources
like videos, forums, guest posts, creating blog content

in order to start building your lists at a decent rate then you need to focus "just" on building your lists nothing else

Before going after traffic, you should start with your landing pages.
A lot of people tend to give away a free ebook for signing up to their list.
So, create a good free product that would attract a bunch of folk first.

That's not a bad idea, I might work on a free e-book this weekend and set it up on a landing page. Should I get a domain just for the landing page and free e-book? Where are some good places to promote a free e-book?

Do pay per click. Have your squeeze page ready and start driving traffic from there. Google Adwords and Microsoft Adcenter are 2 good PPC companies to deal with.

your gonna want to start by creating a sales funnel. Create a squeeze page for a free ebook download that captures their email. After that redirect them to a OTO.

Research other freebie offers squeeze pages to get an idea of what u need

You should be building your list from a squeeze page. In that case you need no pop ups. Of course have one on your blog, but your first priority is to send traffic to a page where there's only 2 options... opt in or opt off

Hey my friend, you have a fantastic list! 300 buyers of seo services? If you don't want them, let me know how much you want for the list. That list is probably worth about $1500 - $4,000 per month.

Not saying you shouldn't continue to build a lead and customer database, but if you can't monetize the list you already have, I really wouldn't bother building another or bigger list.

In any case your question was how to build a list. So, start with your market. Segment that market down as tightly as possible. You should segment by what kinds of problems the people in each segment or niche are experiencing.

Create your lead magnet to address that specific problem. It could be a report, a video, a webinar, a mind map, a list of useful resources, some tool to help them overcome their problem, etc.

Get your backend plan sorted out. What are you going to sell them? Do you have a product that will make it easier solve their problem or are you promoting affiliate products? Either way, plan out your lead magnet so that you plant the seeds of desire for whatever it is that you are promoting.

Construct your follow up sequence in a way that tells an ongoing story while addressing each of the benefits of the product you are promoting as well as overcomes any objections your prospects might have such as price, their ability to use the product effectively, the credibility of the product creator, etc.

Keep promoting one product through at least 7 or 8 emails.

Once you have that in place, then start promoting your lead gen page. I saw someone mentioned solo ads. Solo ads are a fantastic way to build your list. So is PPC (if you know how to set up and optimize a ppc campaign).

Honestly, I'd go back to the list you have and figure out how you are going to monetize that. You already know what they want (traffic). You already know what they perceive as the solution (seo). You already know that they are willing to pay for the solution and how much. You already know that some of them have abandoned seo so they would be open to other forms of traffic generation.

Not kidding, if you are going to abandon that list, let me know what you want for it. It's a little gold mine.

    Good luck. All the best.

This is what I was going to suggest.

Instead of trying to figure out how to build a new list from scratch learn how to maximize the list you already have.

300 clients who have already bought from you. That is a great list that you could be making some really good money on.

Or at a minimum, learn how to get more people onto that same list, that same client base, and at the same time learn how to maximize it.

You just need to pick a niche and then give away something that solves a specific problem in that niche that allows you to get your foot in the door. From there, you can start promoting related products in the niche with your autoresponder sequence.

"Everything is hard until it's easy!" That is so true and I am going to start using that quote I use to tell people if I can do it you can do it, or it's not really difficult which are all true but I think everything is hard until it's easy is so fitting for this business and list building, you have to keep doing it until you get it right.

Depends on your budget. If you have some money to spend, I believe solo ads will get you the most bang for your money. Writing articles within your specific niche and marketing these to a targeted audience will get you subscribers as well. Become a part of a forum that focuses on your specific niche and be active in within this group.

I would recommend you to start of with solo ads. If you are on a budget you can get small volume for a start. (About 40$ should be okay to get started.) When you have already grow your list, then you can start list swapping with other marketers and grow your list for free.
