What is a campaign?

I'm new to the world of marketing. I am in the process of starting to build a list, and I have signed up with a mailing service and am reading the docs.

There is a lot of talk about creating a campaign, but no one actually explains what it is. Is it simply a series of mailshots sent to the list - or is there something else going on?.

Where can I find more info on how to actually design and implement (i.e. actually RUN a campaign)?

    The term "campaign" is used differently - when you make a new pay-per-click ad set it is sometimes termed as a campaign.

    In the strictest sense, it is a series of ads: PPC, email, Web, banners, brochures, flyers, video, audio and any other media that ties together a consistent message.
