Make money pissing people off...

Create a top ten or (like me) top five website. Focus on niches like movies, games, tv shows, cars, girls, etc.

Start making lists. For everything and anything. Think about ways that you can get your audience engaged (i.e. piss them off.)

Gamer's and movie geeks seem to have the most unwavering loyalty to the things they like. It's kind of insane really. I created a list earlier this month for the top five action movies of 2012. Decided to put Battleship on there and traffic to the blog exploded.

[Note: If your unaware, Battleship was not a well received "summer blockbuster" this year.]

But I just didn't put it at number five, but at number two. That seemed to anger more people. It took me all but 15 minutes to draft up and within a few days I had pissed off enough people with the list that the comments section was getting downright nasty. And I thought spam comments were bad!

So how do I make money? Just serve them ads. I occasionally link out with an affiliate code, but the audience usually catches on so I don't do that much anymore.

When all else fails? Piss people the [censored] off!

I bought a great domain to do this type of thing also, but never had time to build it with the other projects I have going on. I am actually even thinking of just selling the domain name now.

I'd be interested to find out how you even got the initial traffic to see that Battleship was ranked #2.

Mostly social media and blog widgets like Scribol and most recently Zergnet.

That's a similar attitude as when creating link baits - You intentionally create buzz doing so.

Glad someone pointed this out. I'm always arguing in the SEO section here on the forum that link-bait is one of the only tried and true method of link building that brings solid results every time you implement it correctly! And one that has always existed--and will continue to exist 18 months from now.

    Great marketing BloggingPro!!!

Yes it seems that once you begin to hit a certain nerve with people they will go out of their way to give you their thoughts about it.

You should consider using this method on Facebook my friend.

I am sure you will get lots more raving madness on their and it will probably spread like "wildfire".

Just a suggestion, please don't get mad at me!

All the best and have a great day BloggingPro!!!

Already two steps ahead of you. In fact, I get a crap-ton of traffic from Facebook because of the nature of my posts. Every time I make a new post on the site I update my fanpage with a link and a catchy headline.

Of course this is true. The most traffic I ever generated to a page was one I called "The Jonas Brothers are better than the Beatles and I can prove it."

    People weren't happy

It's niche based. For example my site focuses on movies, television, music, wacky, games, and not to mention sexy ladies. Basically the male 18-35 demo is my target.

Not all of my lists are geared towards pissing someone off, but a majority of them are. And not all of them are positive lists. I'll throw in a "Worst five movies in [insert genre here]" from time to time.

I would like to say that I'm in touch with pop culture, but honestly, I'm probably as geeky as the people commenting on my blog.

    Perfect timing, BP.

I was just trying to come up with ideas for my rock and roll blog. It would be easy to make a list that people wouldn't agree with, but it sounds like the real trick is to take that concept to the next level.

    Thanks for the idea.

I tend to upset a lot of people in my business, not intentionally though, it's just a simple fact that the truth can hurt and many people would rather be lied to than to face the truth.

I just had to bump this thread from page 3 back to the top because it's so important.

The internet is all about people interacting with each other... sharing, discussing and debating topics that are important to them on a personal or business level.

    Don't you agree?

If you want traffic and sales on ANY TOPIC ... just write about things that you, and other people are passionate about.

Create an audience of like minded people on ANY TOPIC and making money will be easy with a little creativity and thinking outside the box... on ANY TOPIC.

    You are so right BloggingPro.

The only back-links Google respects today are real back-links from real people who are spreading the word about your awesome content across the net via Facebook, Twitter etc.... or just emailing the link to their friends.

There was a time, a few years ago when we could game the system with our SEO tricks.

Guilty as charged.. but those days are over forever. and I mean FOREVER.

Stop trying to trick the search engines with keyword research programs and back-link software and buying Fiverr FB likes and and all that other crap.

Just write a ton of cool stuff that people want to read and share with other people.

    ON ANY TOPIC.

    It really is that simple.

Hell yeah I agree. When I first started I probably may not have though. I was more focused on the micro-niche and trying to rank for keywords with little to no competition.

These days, I have no problem tackling a high competition niche. Why? Because there are millions instead of thousands or hundreds of people I can reach.

In this case, I had the idea from the start that I was going to intentionally stir the pot. And it worked. It always works. I don't mean to promote negativity. Please don't get me wrong.

I am simply saying when you can create something that draws the ire of someone or a group of people you are going to get some publicity.

And YES, it can be completely harmless... like ranking The Avengers above The Dark Knight Rises to send fanboy's into a tizzy in your blog comments section.

Then there are gamer's. Oh man. It's PS3 vs 360 and now I'm focusing on PC games which is getting some legit PC-elitist types commenting on my blog.

Think of it in another way.

A few years ago (when it wasn't overdone yet) we had just a few people come in and claim that a certain marketing method was DEAD! Some of those threads had to be closed because of the shit-storm it erupted into.

Well we all know what one of them is famous for.

People seem to be drawn to drama and conflict. It's almost as if we are tapping into some primal nature when we are upset about something we feel passionate about. Using that to your advantage in a marketing sense, admittedly, is not something many people are doing.

Something UFC's Dana White knows all too well.

I appreciate reading this thread. The way I found out about it was in a group discussion with one of my mastermind groups. And the reason it ended up in our group discussion was because of "controversial comments" made in another discussion blog by BP.

Stirring the pot is a proven method of starting the buzz but if you're using it for a marketing method you must have a set goal of where you want to take it.

Since IM is comparable to fishing then pissing people off to get their attention in the first place is more like a form of bait. It's okay as a strategy but like all other negative forms of attraction, it can sometimes (or more often) backfire to the user of such strategy. Also, aside from the user, this strategy can sometimes negatively effect other people as well. Nevertheless, it's still a good tactic to get traffic but I personally wouldn't count on that all the time.
