What is the single skill that is most important to an Internet Marketer?

Some warriors are complaining that they are getting information overload from reading tonnes of articles, wso and threads that they do not know where to start.

If there is one single skill an internet marketing should master, what should it be?

I hope to get the ball rolling by saying, I feel it is Copywriting.

A marketer should be equipped with certain degree of copywriting skill. Even through it can be outsourced, one need to be able to tell the different between good copywriting and bad one so that he/she can request it to be changed to what he see fit.

I recommend Gary Halbert letter, Influence: Science and Practice 5th edition and Ogilvy on Advertising.

What do you think?

First...you need focus and dedication. If you don't have these two, hang it up right now. Go get a job at the local mall and hope your store does not close. Spending 8-10 hours a day on your feet is also a plus.

Looking back, I would have to say copy writing. Why do I say this? because copy writing gives you the ability to sell...sell...sell. That is what it all boils down to.

You also learn market psychology which will help you design products down the road, and create better creatives.

My gut response was to say the single most important skill is the ability to sell. Copywriting is a major part of that, so it sounds like we have the same basic idea.

Laura makes a good point though. The ability to do something is not the same as actually doing it.

I believe the number 1 skill an internet marketer needs to master is just writing in general(including copywriting).

At the end of the day, it's all about creating high-quality content so you need to develop your writing skills. The best way to do this is to practice. Write whenever you can. Also, reading helps boost creativity(at least for me).

I would have to say that it really depends on what type of marketing you're doing online. What type of business you're running.

For those starting niche blogs and authority sites, like myself, I would have to say the following 5 are mandatory unless you want to outsource constantly: (In no particular order)

    1. General writing (grammar, punctuation, spelling, structure, everything)

    2. Copywriting

    3. Basic to intermediate CSS, HTML, PHP

    4. Ebook creation and formatting using Gimp and OpenOffice.

    5. Auto Responder Series Writing

It's been my experience that learning/mastering the above 5 can give you almost all of the power you'll need to start & operate a great niche site, without needing to outsource.

But, if I had to chose just one skill....

If everything else was equal and money was no object, I would have to say that the ability to find, evaluate and manage outsourced employees would be #1. With such a skill, you're effectively good at everything.

As a internet marketer I believe diversity is an essential skill.....having the ability to try one method and if that does not work try another method and keep trying until you finally perfect your technique. You need to be able to be diverse knowledgeable about your products, demographic, SEO, etc...

After the input from robert. I think that when one's business expand, outsourcing is still critical. So this skill is only applicable to those who is already successful and wish to expand. I say, Management.

I think that it's the ability to relate to the customer. Having the ability to achieve some kind of personable relationship with the reader is a strong skill to have.

Emotion is a big buying force and if you can tap into that, make the reader feel "connected" with you, then everything else falls into place.

The ability to create relationships is what I think it is.

Now, an online biz doesnt scare me at all. If I was to set up another one, I'd just do it, not shake in my boots at the thought of putting myself out there.

  • As a business owner I'm going to come in a little bit out of left field and say that the single skill that is "most" important to an Internet Marketer is Business Management / Entrepreneurship. As in, knowing how to run and grow a business, not work 24/7 in one. You see, skills such as product creation including ebooks, audio, video, software, etc, are helpful skills, knowing how to write copy is helpful, knowing how to program and code, build, and maintain simple or elaborate sites is helpful, knowing how to create graphics is helpful, knowing how to make use of stats and numbers and turn that into profit is helpful, knowing how to get all of the above seen by millions (the marketing part) is helpful, and I could go on, but in reality, you need all of those skills and more in order to have a successful Internet Business running. The information overload comes in when people are trying to learn all the above, and do it all by them selves. The real success lies in knowing how to build a complete team of people that can take on all of these tasks, and together your company becomes the name brand everyone knows. Or in the case of IM, the name brand Guru that gets all the credit for all the hard work that his/her team puts in.

After building a $500K business in 2 years, I'd say the most valuable skill is your ability to listen. If you don't listen to what customers are saying, without letting your ideas and solutions get in the way, you'll never find the real problem to solve.

I'd love to teach it, but I am spending 100% on the business. May be some day I will create an eBook or something.

For now: listen to customers, figure out their problems, brainstorm solutions, create products, launch quickly (and fail quickly if you need to), and learn how to build value that generates traffic and revenue.

Before this business, I had another one that I spent 9 months and $10,000+ on, did the opposite of what I just said, and failed miserably.

With out question, the most important skill to an Internet Marketer and for that matter all marketers is the ability to sell in print. If you can do that and do it well you have the world by the ball$ and don't even know it.

If you can sell in print then you can easily translate that into video scripts, audio scripts and on down the line. The world is your oyster.

    Persistence!

A never-say-die attitude that simply does not allow you to quit. It's the old lightbulb story. Imagine if Edison had given it one half-hearted shot and come to the conclusion that it was never going to work for him. I might have been typing this in the glow of candlelight then.

Truth be told, with the resources readily available to anyone with a web browser and the ability to read IM is far, far easier than inventing the lightbulb was for Edison.

Then why do people fail? Because they give up too soon. My bank accounts are still a far cry short of a million dollars, but they'll never get there if I have a "nah, that's not gonna work for me" attitude. For that reason alone I put persistence at the top of the list.

After that there are a lot of important skills to learn. The most important ones are still mindset related though.
    • Action taking.
    • Productivity.
    • Time Management.
    • Focus

    But what about copywriting?

Well, that sure is important too, but the above are prerequisites for success in IM, copywriting isn't necessarily (although it's a damn good skill to master!).

I think the answer depends on where you are in skill set development. After all being an "Internet Marketer" is about marketing. An IMer has to figure out how to get all aspects completed effectively.

To use an analogy. If I ask what is the most important skill in riding a bike, one could argue that it is balance. That most important thing changes, whether or not you have mastered balance, if you are on a bike heading for a tree. In that case, steering takes precedence.

In short, I believe what is most important is not a single skill but a set of skills required. The set includes focus, persistence, organization, delegation, copywriting, buyer psychology, traffic generation etc.

It is easy to get information overload if one tries to follow several gurus "methods" simultaneously. Becoming a successful IMer is work, and there is no Push-Button solution that I know of to get there.

Every traffic problem, money problem, customer problem, product problem, and any other life or business problem can be overcome, in one way or another, with the right mindset. Without the right mindset, no matter what other skills you possess, you probably won't make it long term.

Mindset = attitude, perserverence, confidence, consistency, focus, striving for excellence, overcoming, creativity, etc.

Hmm, surprised no one has mentioned what I feel is the most important skill required to be a successful web marketer. You must be able to create URGENCY in everything you do. And that is definitely a skill that you have to rehearse and develop to make it habit.

Creating your own urgency is what I think to be a sort of modern-day version of what Napoleon Hill defined in his Think and Grow Rich book as having Definiteness of Purpose. I use the word URGENCY because it contains doing everything with a definiteness of purpose to attain the same goal....just do it faster as if tomorrow doesn't exist. Do it too slow and you'll either burn out or get left behind by your competition.

It is urgency that drives our willingness to learn, to act, to get things done, to grow as a writer and communicator. All the skills and traits on this thread happen successfully because you have an "urgency" to produce, to earn, to complete tasks. Urgency should not be confused with despair as I do see that word come up a lot on the forum. Recognizing our sense of urgency gets us to propel forward whereas despair tends to make us do things irrationally.

For example, if you said you wanted to make $100,000 through web marketing, well heck, you'd be successful with that goal eventually even if it took 10 years.

But, if your doctor told you your heart was going to give out in three months but your life could be saved if you could raise $100,000 in cash by the last day, I'll bet you'd find a way to make it happen. That's "urgency" and you would be totally driven to do nothing but do and learn anything and everything to get you to the goal.

If you knew that news and waited until the last day before the 3 months was up, you would be in a panic state. That's despair.

Moral of the story...channel your fear and despair into urgency and document your Definiteness of Purpose statement and follow it. Practice creating urgency for yourself and everything you do and make it habit. That will fuel all your other skills to happen as mentioned on this thread. Dr. Hill just channellin' away through my fingers! haa, I wish.

After reading the thread I want to go with @lerxtjr . If you had all the other skills mention here and didn't have that urgency then you will gradually burn out. I call the act of being desperate.

When you are not desperate you do not push and success needs constant pushing to get past your present level to the next.

Every other skill is important but you got to have that urgency about succeeding.

IMO the OP hit the nail on the head. If you truly study copywriting it transposes all things in your life. How to deal with people, persuasion, research, and, writing. IMO this includes ebooks, articles, etc.

We all learn differently and different methods help our understanding of business, but, to me copywriting is the gateway to everything, including metrics, JVing effectively, and, leveraging.

It's really hard to answer when you said "one skill". For me I think it's the marketing skill. In my opinion marketing skill is the ability to sell anything to anyone at anytime even they don't want it at all.

Lots of folks have mentioned the ability to sell, write copy, create relationships, etc. I think they're close.

Others have mentioned what I believe are more in the line of personality traits - perseverance, patience, and so on.

I'm going to go one level deeper...

I believe the single most important skill for any marketer is the ability to empathize with your customer or prospect.

If you can do that well, writing copy, crafting and presenting offers, etc. get a whole lot easier.

Focus and Taking Action...I know it's more than 1, but I find this to be extremely important. Due to the massive amount of information out there, it's easy for anyone to become distracted and become victim of the "shiny object syndrome".

What they should really do if to find something that interests them and then learn how they can promote it. While there are many ways to promote, not all will work for everyone. Once they find a promotional method that works for them, they should stick to this method. After this, it's nothing but a matter of tweaking, testing, scaling, and then they can finally achieve success.

A "make it so" type of attitude, running any type of business is a continual obstacle-overcoming process. The real desire to press forward and advance is key, and to always look to the horizon.

    Execute

    If you do not execute
    anything day in and day
    out, you will not see
    any results.

    Whether a failure or a
    success its still a result,
    you just tend to do
    something different with
    either.

    If you do not execute
    you will not have any
    results to know what
    to do next.
