How many affiliate links are enough?

Greetings Warriors!

We have these niche sites and we promote clickbank products. We have an affiliate banner on the right sidebar and a horizontal affiliate banner at the end of each of our post articles.

We normally have 5 to 7 articles for each site. In each of these articles as well, after the first paragraph, we add another text affliate link, some thing like >> Click here to learn... blah blah <<.

Now my employer suggested that our images of every post article, will be clickable like our affiliate banners.

My concern is that we already have lots of affiliate links.

Please speak your thoughts on this. Are we on the right track? Is having lots of affiliate links a big deal?

All The Best,
G.B.

I believe that you wold not get penalized if you add a rel="nofollow", through you may loose traffic if he website is overwhelmed with too many banners. Users won't like that.

I have banners in almost every article and page and I post new articles in my blo everyday. Will this harm my site?

IMO a site(domain) can offer the useful 10-20 links. So just create more high quality links, just forget the nofollow.

I'd personally keep afflinks at a minimum, there is indeed reason to believe that many affiliate links will affect your site negatively. I don't know what "lots" is in your case, but one text link and MAYBE an image should be enough...i would not go over 2 per page.

Depends of course how they are done and who you are promoting. If you are promoting a product where URL is for example productdomain.com/?aid=123, there's no way Google can recognize that as an affiliate link. But if you are promoting Clickbank, then it's pretty obvious.

One technique I see people recommending is separate outgoing link page that then redirects user but every bot can see right thru those.

I haven't tested this but one option could be rewriting URLs on demand with javascript when user clicks. And I mean that if you look at the code, link seems to be pointing at productdomain.com/product-page but when user clicks it, javascript relocates him to hop234.clickbank.com (I can't remember how Clickbank urls are exactly...). Important part is that the affiliate URL is never inserted on the page because with recent changes, Google can detect stuff you inject on the page with javascript.

Google have clearly stated that any selling above the fold is now frowned upon. A good call to action that fit's into the content and images that add value is all that is required. Think outside the box sell to your potential customers in the "free guide " insert you links in there. Build your list then email to them, with value ! One sale email to 3-4 value emails.

Thanks for putting this together, Norman. I have to agree with your points here.

I really need to share this to my employer.

At this time of SEO rage, having many affiliate link per page will affect your ranking negatively.

    Use one, at most two.

I'd suggest having less affiliate links so your site not only ranks well, your visitors will be served well without too much distraction. Quality counts with affiliate links ... maybe choose a select few and stick with them.

Are the affiliate links for different products? If so, this will confuse a visitor if they visit your site and see all these banners promoting similar services/product. Stick with 1 affiliate product and brand it all over your site - so your visitor can know the obvious product that they should buy.

Hi Randall, we are just promoting 1 clickbank product per site.
