I hope you are using a qualified merchant account with paypal, coz normal account does not have features that merchant account does!
Now in case you have a merchant account here's what you need to do to redirect your customers to a certain page after they purchase:

      1.Go to merchant services tab
2.Then set up a gateway(could be a paypal button, a shopping car or a subscription, your wish) you can find their link under key features on the right side)
3.A page will load which 'll have 3 steps, now you want to go to step Three (Customize Advanced Features)
4 There is a check box which says Take customer to a specific page (URL) after successful checkout:, ENABLE IT
      5. Just below that check box is the space where you need to provide the url where you want your customers to land(start with http://), and your done.
6.Now fill the necessary deatils in step 1 and two , then go ahead and click on create button.
      That's it!!
      Hope that helps!
      Cheers!

And for the email, what you can do is once you have set up the redirect page you can put up a web form there(on thank you page or whatever you may call it) and ask your customers to sign up to receive the download link and future updates to your product, you can have an autoresponder sequenced already to provide them the download location.
This way you are sure that only your buyers get the download location and you build a list of "buyers" For any backend that you may have!!!!!

Just be sure that Location of thank you page is secure and not easily accessible otherwise people will get your product for free!

If you are worried about security of your product then you can use DL Guard, it works fantastically with payment gateways like 1shopping cart and paypal!

        Hope this solves your problem!!
        cheers!

very helpful thanks but is there any way around the customer actually having to click on the return to website button, after a successful checkout, is there a way it can just redirect automatically

my concern is that some people may not click on that button after a successful check out

There is no need for that! once you have setup the redirect the way i mentioned your customers will be automatically redirected to the page you specified, only sometimes due to unknown problems if the redirect doesn't work will they have to click on a link that'd say :"click here if you are not redirected automatically in five seconds"

Do one thing: Set up a dummy sales page and a dummy payment at paypal make it(.01$) now go to advanced features and set up a redirect location for thank you page (also dummy) , create that button, paste the code on your dummy sales page and pay yourself
after you ve completed the payment see what happens!
you 'll feel much more confident once you see the process working yourself!
          hope this helps!

Credit Card Processing and Merchant Accounts - PowerPay is a great company and comes with an Authorize.net gateway.

They are the merchant provider for just about all the big names from US in IM.
